Exclusive to the 1989 model year, the 911 Speedster remains one of the rarest and most collectible air-cooled cars of all time, with its styling inspired by the original 356 Speedster of the 1950s. This particular example is one of only 823 Speedsters to have been specified for the U.S. market and came factory-specified in Guards Red with optional Sport Seats, a rear luggage compartment in place of the rear seats, a shorter-throw shifter for the G50 manual gearbox, and more. Discovered in a private garage in California, this one-owner Speedster is now being offered for auction by the selling dealer with less than 39k miles showing on the odometer.

The Speedster is distinguished from the rest of Porsche’s 911 model range with its short and steepened aluminum-framed windscreen, frameless side windows, and double-hump fiberglass tonneau cover which conceals its manual convertible soft top. This example was factory-specified with a Guards Red finish and the wide bodywork of the 911 Turbo model. It rides on staggered-width polished Fuchs-style wheels. The seller adds that the black soft top was replaced due to age. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

To accommodate the car’s lower roofline, the Speedster’s seats are lowered by 20mm and paired with standard seat bottoms to allow easier entry and egress for its passengers. It is also exclusively equipped with manual wind-up windows to save weight and accommodate the unique shape of the glass. Presented in tan, this example’s driver-focused cabin offers optional Sport Seats, rear seats are omitted in place of a luggage compartment, a steering wheel in leather with an elevated hub, and a shorter-throw shift lever. The seller adds that a Kenwood KDC-3005 CD head unit has been fitted.

The air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine in this Speedster generates as much as 217 HP, which is sent to the rear wheels through a G50 5-speed manual gearbox with a factory optional short shifter. Coinciding with its wide Turbo-derived bodywork, the Speedster also received the upgraded brakes and suspension setup of the 930. Upon the seller’s acquisition, the vehicle reportedly underwent a comprehensive inspection and servicing, including checks on all components, an oil change, and an air-conditioner recharge.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This California car was found in a private garage in storage. As noted by the last registration of 2018. This is a one-owner, straightforward forward honest car that was driven and maintained regularly. Upon acquiring the Speedster we ran it through our shop in Campbell, California, where the vehicle was inspected and service was done. All components were checked and the car was given an oil change and an AC recharge. This is a real 38,000-mile car that has been in California its entire life in its original condition with a clean CARFAX. This is 1 of the 823 1989 Speedsters imported to North America. In the modern Speedster era, the 1989 is our favorite with its turbo flares and the 3.2 matted to a G50 transmission. Awaiting your new home.”

The SC wheel and sport seats are a cool and unique combo. Can we please get a shot of the option sticker under the hood?

The suspension has not been changed. The car was lowered by adjusting the torsion bars. It can be readjusted if desired to stock ride height .
    Thanks.

  • ODK (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

What is the story with ride height? Has the suspension been changed?

@Jack19807 Sorry for any delay in responding.
Over the years the car has had some tough up and some paint work on some panels. Nothing noticeable as the paint looks fantastic . But would be remiss if we weren’t forthright in answering your question. To our best it was probably bumper touch up and the right rear quarter.
This is not a garage queen and as you see was enjoyed, driven and serviced by its former owner.
The car has a clean Carfax and a fresh inspection and service.
    Good hunting all

Is the paint factory 1st coat? Some paint meter readings please.
