This custom-built fiberglass-body replica, crafted by the former Classic Motor Company (CMC) of Miami, was reportedly purchased fully assembled by its owner in 1992 and registered in Ohio. Discovered as a barn find in 2022, following 16 years of abandonment in Ohio, it underwent a complete restoration after being transported to Miami, FL. Featuring a black finish over red upholstery, the car boasts bespoke fiberglass bodywork with wide fender flares, a lowered ride height, 15” Wide 5 alloy wheels, dual exhaust outlets, and a 1500cc four-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and dual 40 IDF Weber carburetors. This restored Speedster replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

Constructed upon a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle tubular chassis, this Speedster replica wears a custom fiberglass body by the former Classic Motor Company (CMC) in Miami, Florida. Sporting pronounced fender flares and a low, aggressive ride height, it showcases a black finish accented by chrome trim and a tan retractable soft top. Notable features include a rear decklid grille, aerodynamic side mirrors, teardrop-style taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and 15” Wide 5 alloy wheels with Porsche-crested center caps and new Kumho Ecsta tires. The seller highlights the replacement of chrome trim pieces, lighting assemblies, and weather stripping on the doors, hood, and decklid. Minor paint flaws are noted and additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin presents refreshed red vinyl upholstery on the side door panels and the rear bench. Other features that were replaced include black and red vinyl front seat covers, chrome accents, 2-point seatbelts, black carpeting with red diamond-patterned floor mats, and a painted roll bar. The beige vinyl lined dashboard, enhanced with chrome trim, hosts 6-gauge VDO instrumentation, with the headlight switch and ignition switch positioned at the center. A 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel with a Porsche emblemized horn button is mounted on a quick-release adapter. Additionally, a roller accelerator pedal is located below the deck. Although the radio has been removed (included and wire-ready), dual speakers are positioned on each door with an amplifier in the hood compartment. The seller adds that a USB charger has been added, a wiper system has been fitted, and the alarm system is currently disconnected.

Power is provided by an air-cooled 1500cc 1.5-liter VW inline-four engine with upgraded dual 40 IDF Weber carburetors. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transmission. Other features include an OE 12V starter, an ignition switch with two keys, a 12V battery group size 42, a 12V ignition coil, a 12.5-gallon gas tank, and a fuse box, dimmer, relay, and flasher. Stopping is provided by front disc brakes and rear drums. The seller highlights notable service items, including an engine oil change with 5-30 motor oil, the replacement of an S2870A oil filter, the installation of RL86C spark plugs and wires, replacement rear drum brake shoe set & cylinders, a replacement front-passenger suspension tie rod assembly, and all wheels fully aligned.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “The custom-built fiberglass-body replica, previously manufactured by Classic Motor Company (CMC) of Miami, was acquired fully assembled in 1992 by its current owner and registered in Ohio. Discovered as a barn find in Ohio in 2022 after 16 years of abandonment, it was shipped to Miami, FL, and fully restored. It retains original VDO gauges with 7,600 miles. The Porsche 356 Speedster is a stunning example of automotive history and is a highly sought-after model for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster replica is named after the iconic actor James Dean, who once owned one. It has a custom-built fiberglass body by CMC Classic Motor Company, mounted on a 1967 VW Beetle chassis and equipped with a built-up 1500cc 1.5L 4-cylinder air-cooled engine, 4-speed manual transmission and converted to dual 40 IDF Weber carburetors. You can cruise around with the efficiency of a 1-barrel but will open up to a high-performance 2-barrel carb when you want to punch it. This car has a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive RWD layout."

@Pjku79 Hello. Correct. The paint is original. The car has only been driven a around town so only like 200 miles since it was fully restored. It was recovered towards the end of 2022.

Also based on my math, are you saying it was driven from 1992 to 2006 but then parked for 16 years until 2022?

Do you have any pictures of it prior to the "restoration"? Is the paint 32 years old?

How many miles have been put on since 2022?

  • Pjku79 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

The timeline on this is a little confusing to me. You say the current owner built it in 1992, but then you say it was a barn find in 2022. How did the current owner forget it was in his own barn?

What was restored in 2022? Was the engine/trans rebuilt?

  • MH911 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

@cristi10hagen @cristi10hagen. Thanks for responding. Can you please take a picture of the gear stick?

  • cristi10hagen (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

    @Richard356 Pics have been uploaded.

  • cristi10hagen (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

@MH911 it is manual 4 gears

  • Pjku79 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

@MH911 I was wondering the same thing. That shifter doesn't look like a manual.

  • MH911 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

Automatic or manual? Looks automatic from the pic.

Nice car. Do you know the reason for the tachometer not working in the video? Would it be possible to see a video of the car driving also?

  • cristi10hagen (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@Richard356 Hello. I’m working on getting those pics uploaded.

  • cristi10hagen (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@itsmegary Hello. It is currently titled in Ohio as 1967 VW Beetle but you can apply for a Title change with the DMV when you register it in your state.

  • itsmegary 1 week, 4 daysago

    Is it titled as a 1956 Porsche or a 1967 VW ?

  • Richard356 (registered bidder) 1 week, 4 daysago

If possible, can you take a picture of the bottom of the car, this would expose the Tubular Chassis you mentioned in your description.
