Up for auction is this Beck 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder replica finished in a Silver Blue Metallic paint color over a black interior.  This example is said to have been custom-built by Beck in 1994 for its original owner who has kept the car to this day. The car was eventually moved to the owner's summer home in Florida, however it remains registered in Maine as a 1955 Porsche. It features lightweight fiberglass bodywork over a custom tubular steel frame and is powered by a 1915cc flat-four Volkswagen engine rated at 125 HP.  Currently located in Florida, this Beck Spyder is now being offered on behalf of its original owner out of Maine, with just over 7k miles displayed on the odometer.

The Silver Blue Metallic paint is said to have been preserved in excellent overall condition with very few cosmetic imperfections (images are provided in the photo gallery).  Some noteworthy features include a center-fill hood with a Beck front emblem, a twin-grille rear decklid, a single driver’s side exterior mirror, and 5.5 x 15” steel wheels on all four corners.  The tires are said to be in good conditon, altouhgh they are reported to be older.  This Spyder is also accompanied by a tonneau cover and soft-top with side curtains.

The cabin is appointed with black carpeting and leather bucket seats with lap belts.  The painted dashboard houses analog Porsche-style instruments, and other details include Beck floormats and a 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel.  The seller reports all gauges to be working properly.

Power comes from an air-cooled 1915cc flat-four engine with dual Weber carburetors.  The engine is said to have been sourced from a 1967 Volkswagen and rebuilt by Beck.  A claimed output of 125 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual VW gearbox that was also refurbished by Beck during the initial build.  Other features include a 12-volt alternator, rear drum brakes, and a rebuilt Karmann Ghia front suspension with disc brakes.  Routine maintenance is said to have been kept up to date by the original owner and this Beck is said to be in fantastic driving condition.

This sale will include a set of 2 keys, some service records, a tonneau cover, a soft-top with matching side curtains, a bill of sale, and a Maine registration.  Offering up a visceral lightweight driving experience paired with the iconic looks of the 550 Spyder, this Beck replica presents a very special opportunity.

Is it possible to title the car in Florida or any state to make export to Canada possible?
My broker tells me we need a title.

The car is registered as a 1955 model year so there are no safety or smog requirements to be met. The bill of sale will also list the year as 1955.

  • David23 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@twin-grille-roadster so how does the bill of sale list the car? Registration? 1955? It would need to be registered etc. as a prior to 1975 in order to avoid smog etc. in California.

  • twin-grille-roadster (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

I am selling the car for the original owner who is a friend. When he purchased the car new from Beck, he lived in New York. A few years later he moved to Maine where he still maintains his primary residence. A few years ago he purchased a winter home in Florida to where he moved the Spyder but for simplicity he kept the Spyder registered and insured in Maine . Maine does not issue titles for cars older than 1995. The back of the the Maine registration has provision to transfer ownership. This along with a bill of sale is how all 1994 and earlier cars are sold coming from Maine. All other states are aware of this and it has never been a problem to transfer a Maine car in this manner. Thanks for your question and for your bids.

@jsadamski I would assume that the build number is the last digits of the VIN which is 664. I spoke with the folks that took over after Chuck Beck sold the company and they told me where to find the VIN stamping. It is on the chassis tube that is at the back of the transaxle stamped in on the passenger side. I have submitted pictures of the VIN and the engine to Pcarmarket to be added to the listing. They should be up soon. Thanks for your interest.

So nice to see one of these without Porsche badges..its a nice Beck VW Special..but I cannot imagine how it gets registered as a 55 Porsche!!?? Not sure that would go down well with the DMV here in Ca..anyone?? I own a real 1956 A Outlaw and it always makes me laugh when folks ask me if its a replica. I could live with a Beck like this without dressing it up as something it isnt.

  • jsadamski (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@PCARMARKET thank you . Also do you know what build number this is ? and is that tag still in the front bonnet?
