Up for auction is this 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder replica finished in silver over a red leather interior. Built by Chuck Beck Motorsports in 2003 as chassis #776, this replica was styled after James Dean’s famous “Little Bastard” 550 Spyder and features a 2100cc CB Performance engine, oil cooler system, electronic fuel injection, four-wheel disc brakes, and adjustable shocks.  Cared for by two prior owners, this nicely executed 550 Spyder replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee with approximately 15k miles showing on the odometer.

The fiberglass bodywork is laid over a tubular steel chassis and comes finished in a classic silver metallic color sporting the iconic livery of James Dean’s 550 Spyder, including red stripes over the rear fenders, #130 racing numbers, and “Little Bastard” script across the rear end.  The factory-installed windshield has been replaced in favor of a period-correct 550 Spyder Plexiglass windscreen, although the original windshield is said to accompany the sale as well.  Other details include a driver-side aero mirror, leather bonnet straps, and a red tonneau cover.  Some signs of road-going wear are noted as well as a few minor scrapes and scratches throughout the exterior, additional images are provided in the gallery.  The car currently rides on a set of period-correct 16”x 3.25” wheels dressed in vintage-style Coker tires, while the original set of 15”x 4.5” and 15” 5.5” wheels fitted by Beck are also said to accompany the sale.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in red leather with matching carpeting and features a banjo-style white-rimmed steering wheel, classic gauges with green markings, and a rearview mirror mounted on the body-colored dashboard. The seller notes some wear on the carpeting in the driver’s footwell as well as a few scrapes and scuff marks on the painted interior panels.  The tonneau cover is also missing one snap on the driver’s side.  The seller confirms all gauges and electrical components to be working properly.

Power comes from an air-cooled CB Performance 2100cc flat-four engine equipped with electronic fuel injection, crank fire electronic ignition, a CB Performance oil cooler system, and a period-style four-to-one Magnaflow exhaust.  Approximately 150 HP is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual Volkswagen transmission.  This Spyder also features four-wheel disc brakes as well as adjustable shock absorbers. Recent service includes an oil and filter change as well as all-new spark plugs.

This sale will include an additional set of wheels and a clean title.  A faithful recreation of one of the most legendary Porsches of all time, this James Dean inspired 550 Spyder replica is just waiting to be driven and displayed by a new owner.

    Thanks Miles.

@badboybuses Just got back to the office and was able to look at the title. Titled as a 2003 ASVE (Assembled Vehicle) in the state of Florida. It does not have a top, just the tonneau. However the other windshield does have the clips. I believe you can still get these from Beck as well. I have been on the road today and will upload photos of the inside firewall first thing in the AM when back to the shop. I know we are getting tight on time, my apologies! The carpet is in decent shape, there is some wear at the drivers throttle heal. Other than that, is good shape. Report back soon! Miles

@miles.s I have a few other questions now as well. I tried to reach you on the contact seller, but have no replies there so I'll ask away here. # 1. Does it by chance have a top? As it has the mounting stops on the clam shell installed in place and may have been set up to use with the other windshield. #2. Can you show a picture of the firewall from the inside of the cockpit that shows the carpet and upper pad that is covered by the tonneau cover in all your current photos? I assume it's lovely, but if its not asked then I didn't do my due diligence. #3. In looking back at your answer to my initial question about the title I see you mention the veh is owned by your dealership and it's name will be noted on the title. That indicates that the dealers name is not the name listed on the title and that's fine. I get it. But I need to know it its titled as a 2003 Beck 550 or something else. Obviously it would be better if it was titled as a 1955 Beck Spyder. This is crucial in registering it in places like Cal or even my state Utah. Please advise. Thanks.

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Miles.s Could you address the title questions please?

  • Miles.S (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Badgolfer there are retractable seat belts on both sides. Shipping to Southern California is roughly $1800. It depends on a few things. Thanks! Miles

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@miles.s Can you tell me how is it titled, year and make? Does it have a TN title? Thank you.

  • Badgolfer (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Are there seat belts? How much do you think it would cost to ship to Southern California?

@gd1891 You're right! Thanks for correcting me.

  • gd1891 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Fredo Spyders came from the Porsche factory with the Key on the right hand side.

  • Fredo 2 years, 4 monthsago

A really nice job, except one oversight in my opinion. The ignition key belongs on the left side of the steering wheel. It's a long held Porsche tradition. You can google it to see why.

@badboybuses This is owned by my dealership. My dealership will be noted on the title. As an out of state buyer, you will not have to pay taxes to me. The complete purchase price will be the highest bid here plus Pcars fee. Thanks! Miles

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Is this Spyder owned by the dealer selling it, or is it a consignment sale? Who's name is on the title? As I'm not from Tennessee, and dealers sometimes apply sales tax and other fee's I'm needing to know this. Thanks.

@badboybuses originally these cars could have had pinned hoods, meaning they did not have hinges. Undo the straps and pull the hood out. They also did not have latches, the straps were what held the hood down and in place. This car does have a latch and hinges, so the straps are simply for a vintage period look.

  • badboybuses (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Front hood straps. Why? It's not like it can fly open.
