Created for the Mercedes-Benz U.S. racing team to compete in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) series in 1957, the 300 SLS (Super Light Special) was a dedicated racing version of the 300 SL roadster of which only 2 examples were ever produced. This handcrafted replica was created by a former Stuttgart-based Mercedes-Benz employee featuring a custom zinc chromate steel tube chassis, fiberglass bodywork, and a Chevrolet 350 Small Block V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. The car also incorporates a red vinyl interior with black leather seats, LED lighting, front disc brakes, a removable hardtop, vintage 15” wire wheels, a custom side-exit exhaust, and more. This one-of-a-kind 300 SLS replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Nevada with approximately 2,500 miles driven since completion.

The 300 SLS race car is distinguishable from a standard 300 SL roadster by its lack of bumpers and a low-profile windscreen. The custom chassis of this replica is made from rust-resistant zinc chromate square steel tubes and features lightweight fiberglass bodywork. The car is finished in silver and features aluminum replica door handles, custom replica taillamp assemblies, LED lighting, a trunk-mounted fuel filler, replica rear badging, leather trunk straps, custom side-exit exhaust pipes, dual windshield wipers, and vintage 15” wire wheels dressed in newly mounted Vredestein tires. A removable hardtop is also included; however, it remains without paint or upholstery and is accompanied by a set of uninstalled Lexan windows. Some minor imperfections are noted on the hood. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this 300 SLS replica features a full custom interior with new black carpeting, sound-deadening insulation, black leather bucket seats, and red vinyl upholstery on the dashboard, door panels, center tunnel, and tonneau cover. Accessories include a four-spoke wood steering wheel, Speedhut gauges, a GPS speedometer, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, red lap belts, a USB charging port, integrated speakers, and a phone mount.

Power comes from a new 350ci Chevrolet Small Block V8 crate engine with a 4-barrel carburetor. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 3-speed automatic transmission and stopping power comes from disc brakes up front and drum brakes in the rear. The engine is said to have been dyno-tested at over 360 HP and has been driven approximately 1,500 test miles with one oil change performed after the break-in. The seller notes that there is no catalytic converter equipped, which may interfere with emissions compliance in some states.

This sale will include an unfinished removable hardtop and a clean Nevada title for a 2023 Mercedes-Benz (Special Construction).

The seller would like you to know: “In a sea of Gullwing and Cobra replicas, this car will stand out because you just don't see these at the local cars and coffee. The owner is a true German engineer whose goal was to build a very high-quality SLS replica.”

@michaelscheid25 - the underside pictures were before the exhaust was converted to side exit exhaust. Sorry about that confusion.

  • Michaelscheid25 (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

So the engine exhaust is at the rear of the car and not thru the pipes coming out of the cowl?

@wonk - as noted below, can be converted to manual - not too difficult to do.

  • RonSusser (seller) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@ppalmer - no soft top at all. It's a true roadster. Regarding to the hard top, it is unfinished - meaning there is glass included but it must be fitted and the hard top must be painted and upholstered and hardware installed. Hardward not include. It will fit once the above steps are taken. Engine is a new 2023 crate motor with only 1500 miles driven. Do not know details on the trans.

    Nice car !
Is there a convertible top ?
Also does the hard top fit as it should and does it have glass in it !
What year is the engine & trans & how many miles ?

    Thank You

I cannot believe the effort to building a reproduction classic racing inspired vehicle like this...

....then go and put an automatic transmission in it....

  • oneslyone (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

Interestingly, it resembles a combination of the 1955 SLR and 1957 SLS. I agree with @Jimbo1907; it would be excellent with an MB chassis and powerplant. It's still a very pretty car.

  • Jimbo1907 (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

I think this car would benefit from conversion to a manual, as noted, and an engine from Mercedes-Benz. The builder seems to have gotten the styling right.

@kfee - thanks for the compliment - according to the builder, not that difficult. Very straight forward conversion. Cost approx. $3000 if you do it yourself (Estimate). All parts are available from Summit Racing.

Welcome to the auction for this very unique Mercedes 300SLS replica. It was lovingly hand built by a German engineer living in the US. I'm told that this is one of the 12 bodies that was created by Thoroughbred Motorcars. I'm happy to answer any and all questions. Good luck.
