Up for auction is this 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster Replica by Vintage Speedsters of California, prior to the company being moved to Arizona in 2018.  Built upon the chassis of a 1968 Volkswagen, this Speedster has been finished in Auratium Green over a Light Sand Allanteinterior and is equipped with a custom-built 1915cc flat-four engine by Rascon Motorsports.  It also features an upgraded electronic ignition system, adjustable front and rear suspension, a 4-speed Freeway Flyer transmission, and powder-coated steel wheels from Beck/Special Edition.  This tastefully appointed and beautifully crafted Speedster replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with just over 8k miles showing on the odometer.

The handcrafted fiberglass bodywork has been finished in the rare classic Porsche color of Auratium Green, which was first offered on the Porsche 356 in 1957.  A tan convertible top is equipped along with a matching tonneau cover and side curtains. Custom “CruZin Windows” are also included which can be installed to reduce wind disturbance and provide a more comfortable top-down driving experience.  Other details include chrome brightwork and Porsche Speedster emblems, a German-made Aero mirror with a convex lens, an LED third brake light hidden within the rear grille, mesh headlight grilles, bumper guards, and powder coated 15” steel wheels from Beck/Special Edition.  These wheels come dressed in Pirelli P7 185/60-15 tires and feature Porsche crested hubcaps and valve stems.

Inside, the cabin has been upholstered in Light Sand leather and grey carpeting. Additional features include Coco floormats, 3 inch Crow Enterprises racing lap belts, an ivory shift knob, driver footrest, and a Derrington-style wood steering wheel with Porsche crested horn button.  A 12-volt outlet has been added along with a safety kill switch.

Power comes from a custom-built 1915cc flat-four engine by Rascon Motorsports.  This air-cooled engine offers a 7.1:1 compression ratio with 94mm pistons and a 69mm stroke length.  It also features dual carburetors, an upgraded Pertronix electronic ignition and coil, an external oil cooler and filter, a dual-tip Tri-mil exhaust, and an electric fuel pump.  Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 3:88 Freeway Flyer 4-speed manual transmission.  Other performance features include front disc brakes, a front anti-sway bar, and an adjustable front and rear suspension with camber compensator.

This sale will include a clean title.  With its period styling and upgraded performance, this nicely executed Speedster replica is not to be overlooked.

@em4bartz What you are seeing that look like roll-up windows are my "Cruzin windows" and they are designed to be used when the top is down. The car also has regular side curtains and both of them attach the same way to the top of the door rail. I make the Cruzin windows and they can be learn more about them on my Cruzin window website, www.cruzinwindows.com

In the top-up pictures, the car clearly has side curtains. But in some of the top-down pictures, it appears to have roll-up windows. What are they?

@replicaspeedster.com Just wanted to point out that this car does have heat as you can see from the two heater vents in the footwell. It also has a type of carpet that some people refer to as Square Weave due to the pattern, it's much nicer than the typical nylon carpet with no pattern, but it is not the very expensive German Square weave carpet that most people are referring to when they speak of Square Weave carpet.

@replicaspeedster.com Clarification. I said it's in front of the mirror on the door and meant that it's on the fender in front of the mirror which is mounted on the door .

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@richard69911 Thank you for the question Richard. As you know, this is not a brand new car. It has been driven, it has a little over 8,000 miles on it and it does have a few very minor rock chips, but it has been well taken care of. I have just posted a picture of what I think you might be looking at with the chips circled in Black and the reflections circled in White.
I'm also uploading a picture of what I think is the most significate chip on the car and it’s on the hood.
I'm also uploading a picture of the only other paint issue that I see on the car and it's just in front of the mirror on the door. It's extremely hard to see and photograph unless you have the lighting just right, but it appears to be small lines in the paint. It may be something from a buffing wheel that can just be polished out, I don't know, but I want to point it out.

It looks like there may be some paint damage below the front hood and below the headlights (rock chips?), but it's hard to tell from the photos. Can you post some close ups of any paint defects on the car. Thanks

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@ftsuru Thank you for the questions. Yes, everything you see in the photos and video except the Yellow and Black plate comes with the car. Additionally the car comes with a full zippered tonneau cover and a car cover. I have some service records that I will provide to the new owner, but as you can see in the pictures and videos, it's been well cared for and has many upgrades in addition to having less than 8,400 miles.
I have a generic information page from Rascon Motorsports that lists the following:
    Piston size 94MM
    Stroke 69MM
    Comp Ratio 7.9 to 1
    Heads stock
Valve size Intake 35MM Exhaust 32MM
    Valve springs Single Hi Rev
    Cam shaft stock
Rocker Arms 1 to 1 ratio stock
I do not have a build sheet from Vintage Speedsters and I don't know the date of the build or the horsepower. It's just my guess, but I would guess approximately 100HP. Watch the video and that might give you a better idea.
You are correct, it IS a "great car to drive"! Again, just watch the video.
    Thanks again for the question.

@replicaspeedster.com, nice car. Love the old school color. What about that cool vintage luggage? Does that come with the car? Do you have records of service over the life of the car? What is the actual build date? Do you have the records of the construction and engine specs? What is the horspower output for the car? Like I said, this little speedster looks like a great car to drive.

@replicaspeedster.com: thanks for the quick and concise response….I love this car, lets see where the bidding goes, may be too rich for me…I can only dream!

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@richjs43 I had to re-watch the engine video to see what you were seeing and I believe it was the little shake that was visible on the underside side of the engine. First, these cars typically do not have a choke and because of that they can run a little rough until they warm up. Also, a VW type 1 engine is hanging off of the transmission with 4 bolts and no mounts at the opposite end of the engine. That's a few hundred pounds of steel that's undergoing internal combustion hanging out there. I've had over 100 replica Speedsters and it's completely normal.
    Thanks for the question.

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@replicaspeedster.com: Hello, beautiful speedster. Would you please comment on the engine shake….I have owned several VW’s plus a 1976 Porsche 912E , I do not recall idle engine shake on any of them….thanks.
