Now up for auction is this 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster replica by JPS Motorsports.  Titled as a 1974 Volkswagen, this replica is finished in Silver Grey Paint over a light grey interior.  It features modern electronics and sound equipment, LED lighting, a coil-over front suspension, independent rear suspension, disc brakes, and a 4-speed Freeway Flyer manual transmission paired with a custom-built 2276cc flat-four engine with dual Weber carburetors.  Currently showing just over 26k-miles on the odometer, this Speedster recently underwent a major tune-up by the engine builder and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The handcrafted fiberglass bodywork is finished in Silver Grey paint with a black convertible soft top and matching side curtains.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  Additional exterior features include Porsche/Speedster emblems, engine grille badges, mesh headlight stone guards, Marchal amber fog lights, front and rear bumperettes, dual aero convex side mirrors, and LED bulbs for the taillights, brake lights, and turn signals.  It rides on 16" chrome ventilated wheels dressed in Pirelli P400 tires.  Custom “CruZin Windows” are also included which can be installed to reduce wind disturbance and provide a more comfortable top-down driving experience.

Inside, the cabin has been appointed with grey square weave carpeting, and light grey leather Speedster-style bucket seats.  Eastwood Thermocoustic Barrier insulation has also been applied throughout the entire car.  Other details include black seat piping, a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, a Porsche-crested wooden shift knob, Coco floormats, and Porsche dashboard badging.  The driver is also supplied with a left-foot rest pedal, three-point retractable seatbelts, a 12-volt accessory outlet below the dashboard, electric door locks, a Crime Guard keyless entry and alarm system, multiple speakers, and a Pioneer DEH-P3700MP audio receiver with satellite radio compatibility.  An enhanced heating system is also equipped with electric blower motors on either side of the car.

Power comes from a custom-built 2276cc flat-four engine with dual 40 IDF Weber carburetors.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a Rancho Pro Street 4-speed manual 3:88 “Freeway Flyer” transmission featuring a quick ratio shifter with reverse lockout.  Other drivetrain upgrades include an Eyeball Engineering transmission brace and torque bar.  Disc brakes are equipped at all four corners and the suspension consists of an independent rear setup, ¾” sway bars front and rear, and a double A-arm coil-over front suspension by Eyeball Engineering.  A major tune-up was recently performed by the original engine builder including an oil service as well as valve, carburetor, and shift linkage adjustments.  The following list details other highlights of the engine:

  • CB Los Panchitos Heads w/ 40x35.5 Stainless Steel Valves

My brother noticed that my driver's side door was slightly ajar in the Chevron station nighttime photos and the daytime photos when the top was down. In the daytime photos with the top up, it is clearly completely closed. I just wanted to assure you that the door does close properly.

@replicaspeedster.com Thx for the quick answer. Good luck w/the sale.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 12 monthsago

@MSQ The car has not been on a dyno, so it would just be a total guess as to the HP and torque.
Tach is at approximately 3,500RPM at 70 mph.
No oil leaks that I have seen, but it's a type1 VW engine and my experience with type1 VW engines is that they all eventually leak.

  • MSQ (registered bidder) 2 years, 12 monthsago

    @replicaspeedster.com
    Nice car.
    Questions:
    - roughly what is HP & Torque
    - what is the tach at when you are driving say 70 mph
    - any oil leaks

Good luck with the sale. Looks well done.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 2 years, 12 monthsago

Good morning. I'm Troy the seller of this beautiful Speedster. I'll be checking frequently for questions. Be sure to watch the videos, especially the one of my wife Sally and I driving the car through the Fresno county foothills. The custom A-arm suspension and the IRS rear suspension make this car handle SO much better than the typical VW front beam and rear swing axel suspension.
Also, here is a link to all of this cars upgrades and all the engine build specs. https://www.replicaspeedsters.com/pages/SilverGreyJPS2021CarandEngineDetails.htm
