Available for auction is this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Replica finished in blue over a blue interior. Designed to compete against the likes of the Shelby Cobra and Ferrari GTO in the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans, only five of the planned 125 1963 Corvette Grand Sports ever saw production. Using the original blueprint from chassis #005, Dean Hoskins and Dante Lombardi (D&D Motors) created replica molds of the Corvette Grand Sport, reportedly producing 40 kits in total. This replica features a 454ci GM crate engine paired with a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, a custom-built chassis, a 32-gallon fuel cell, a one-piece fiberglass body, a Dana 44 rear-end, and much more. Driven less than 100 miles since completion, this D&D Motors Corvette Grand Sport is now being offered at auction by its seller out of Georgia.

This example is originally based on a 1963 Corvette, finished in blue with a #50 racing livery. The custom-built D&D Corvette one-piece fiberglass body sits atop a 4” custom tube chassis in a black powder coat. Exterior equipment includes widened fender flares, a vented hood, plexiglass headlight covers, low-noise side-exit exhaust pipes, rear quarter ducts, and Halibrand-style wheels with knock-off spinners mounted with Goodyear Blue Line tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The interior features two custom fiberglass seats trimmed in blue vinyl with a custom 6-point roll cage and 5-point harness belts. Accessories include custom carpets with Dynamat insulation, Autometer instrumentation, an Ididit tilt steering column, and a heater/defroster. The seller notes the tachometer and fuel gauge are currently inoperable.

Power comes from a 454ci GM crate engine which is said to produce as much as 425 HP and 500 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter and a Dana 44 rear differential. This Grand Sport replica rides on Corvette suspension with upgraded front and rear sway bars and polyurethane bushings throughout. Additional performance upgrades include a 32-gallon fuel cell, TRACO-style big-black Chevrolet valve covers, a Sweet Steering rack and pinion, a Holley 750CFM carburetor, a March serpentine pulley system, an aluminum radiator, and electric cooling fans.

This example is offered with a bill of sale.

Good afternoon Bidders! Thank you for all the questions and bids! I want to assure you this car is in outstanding condition. It shows and runs terrific. I encourage you to come see the car and make an appointment for inspection if you like. The reserve is aggressive and priced to sell.. Someone will be getting a gem added to their collection in the next few days!!

There is a binder that comes with the car with a lot of additional documentation, receipts, articles, etc. The binder is in the car where it's being garaged. I will get some more photos this week and add to the listing.

As for the type of braking system, it has Disc front and rear. Stopping power is really good. They feel pretty new as an 88 mile car would.

    Thanks again.

  • ContinentalConvertible (seller) 11 months, 1 weekago

@rreasen @rreasen. Between the seats on the lower level. What am I seeing here?

Definitely not rust. It looks like dried glue of sorts and paint flaking. I could have touched up and had it detailed more, but thought it looked cool the way it is. Same with door jambs by front of the roll cage/bottom of the dash. The car seems very solid overall.

  • ContinentalConvertible (seller) 11 months, 1 weekago

@rreasen 1. Do you have vin and a title for the car? Seller notes say “comes with bill of sale”. Please clarify. There is no VIN or Title. I purchased as-is with Bill of Sale.

    2. Are tires dry rotted or blocked from sitting? Will they need replaced to drive? I don’t think there’s dry rot or flat spots. I’ll try to get some more photos of tires this week.

    3. Is the car a kit car or an actual corvette replica/tribute - please confirm and explain. Please see @rreason notes. I believe it’s a kit car/recreation. Thank you

    4. What year was the build started and completed? I’m not sure. But will try to research more. I’m thinking it was built in the 90’s.

    5. Do you have paint sample, codes or cans to go with car! I don’t, but I can probably figure that out.

    6. What braking system is utilized? I’ll confirm this week and get back to you.

Thank you for the questions and bidding.

When was this built ? Does it have a manufacturer’s date on the chassis? Do you have a dossier of the build ? Is it titled? Reason I ask is that I am in Canada. Kit builds , tribute cars , etc need to be 15 years or older in order to be Importable into Canada .

  • rreasen (registered bidder) 11 months, 1 weekago

For the audience benefit. D&D Corvette was originally out of Akron,OH. They built kit cars for years until the owners over collected and under produced the vehicles that were promised. History shows they were great for a period of time but eventually went out of business and ran under the name of Mongoose for some time. Unlike other reputable replica and kit car companies that have wide support for parts and forums of other owners, you are getting what you see and will be on your own. I’m bidding on the car knowing this but I believe seller should deliver a more fulsome understanding and Pcar owes the buying community the same. Again, I’m bidding on the car.

In phots 125-127 there appears to be something that looks like rust?? Between the seats on the lower level. What am I seeing here?

It is a beautiful car but we need to get specific on the “kit” or custom part please. I appreciate answers to these and believe it will help with more spirited bidding.

  • ContinentalConvertible (seller) 11 months, 1 weekago

@Driveresq it’s not. You’re correct. And neither is the fuel gauge. Was supposed to be noted in listing. Should be easy fix. Thanks.

  • Driveresq (registered bidder) 11 months, 1 weekago

Tach doesn’t look to be working in driving video.

  • ContinentalConvertible (seller) 11 months, 1 weekago

@rreasen the squeaking in drive video is likely due to not being driven in years. As I understand, the car was in a personal “dream car” collection, basically a museum. Thank you for bidding.

  • rreasen (registered bidder) 11 months, 1 weekago

Can you please explain the amount of squeaking during the drive video?

Welcome to the auction. I’ll be available for any questions throughout the sale. This car looks and drives incredible. It gets all the attention you’d expect from such a recreation of Corvette History!

The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport was created to win FIA endurance races and compete against the venerable Shelby Cobra and Ferrari GTO. Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov furthered the development of a lightweight 1963 model featuring an aluminum-block 377ci V8 engine that developed more than 550hp intended to race in the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans. Chevrolet planned on producing 125 examples, but only five were said to be completed and wound up in the hand of private racing teams. Then along came a man who had a passion for Corvettes, particularly Grand Sports, and decided he was going to build a replica of the 1963 Grand Sport. William "Dean" Hoskins of Akron, OH, knew the Corvette and racing world very well. Hoskins took measurements from the 005 original Grand Sport and set out to make his own cars. By 1990, D&D Motors had begun building their own cars. Hoskins and his partner, Dante Lombardi, bought a 1964 Corvette coupe, which was used to make the molds.

Good luck to all enthusiasts with the chance to own this special car!
