Derived from the highly exclusive 300SL Roadster, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL made its debut at the 1954 New York Auto Show featuring similar styling, suspension, and engineering. It also introduced a new 1.9-liter inline-four engine, derived from the 300SL's straight-six. A final year example, this 1963 Mercedes Benz 190SL Roadster comes finished in Black over tan leatherette upholstery. It was acquired by its seller in 2004 and is said to have since been stored in a climate-controlled garage. This 190SL is now being offered for auction out of Pennsylvania.

The 190SL shares its basic styling with the 300SL Roadster including its distinctive fender flares, bumper design, and single-bar front grille with a central Mercedes-Benz emblem. This example is said to have been refinished in its factory-specified shade of black some time ago and features a matching convertible soft top. It rides on 15” chrome wheels with paint-matched Mercedes-Benz emblemized hubcaps and new whitewall tires mounted within the last 10k miles. The seller notes some signs of road wear are present, additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is appointed with tan leatherette upholstery covering the seats, door panels, and upper dashboard. A white-finished two-spoke steering wheel is mounted ahead of a body-colored dash fascia which presents analog VDO instrumentation, a quartz clock, heater controls, and a “190 SL” logo radio compartment cover. The seller adds that the speedometer and radio were rebuilt, the tachometer is working properly although a small chrome accent has fallen off within, and the carpets show some wear.

The 190SL derived power from a type M121 BII 1.9-liter SOHC inline-four carbureted engine that drives the rear wheels by way of a synchronized 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller states that the originality of the transmission is unknown, although it has been rebuilt by the professionals at Precision Autoworks in Camden, New Jersey, along with the installation of a new clutch, brakes, and brake booster.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “I've loved this car for the past 20 years...I'm at a stage in my life where I believe she's ready for her next caretaker.  I've enjoyed and loved her and hope she finds her next home.”

Attractive car and worth the effort to put back to rust-free condition. In particular, nice colors.

I didn't know the 190SL and 300SL engines were related in design (see copy for listing) I thought they were from different engine families.

GLWA, these are nice sporting cars- not all that fast, but elegant to a fault.

@3theleo hi there... I'm what seems like a million years ago I ordered a data card and have no idea where I put it... I'll look and will snap a pic if I find it...all lights/electric work with the exception of the temp gauge... the bulb was flickering and went out...I normally would address this in its yearly service in april...I had the fuel pump replaced and forgot to list that in the original listing

Project car worthy. Question, data card for this 190sl?
Other than the rust and obvious wear, are all electrical components in working order? Video illustrating lights working and gauges? GLWTA

@DC911guy thank you...I love every aspect of her

  • petelewnes (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@arjun30 good morning... no not bent just the way the photo came out. The underside and body is pretty much how I bought the car.. she's been in a climate controlled environment and never progressed further.

  • arjun30 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

In pictures 21 and 22, the chrome around the front grill looks off level not he left side. Is it bent?

Rust underneath does look pretty bad. During your 20 years of ownership, have you done any thing to prevent the rust from spreading?

  • arjun30 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Does the car has original and matching motors?

  • DC911guy (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

    Thanks for your response
    I will be watching closely
    She is a beauty

  • petelewnes (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Coachmule thanks so much for your comment - she's not been hard to maintain and in fact I find them very easy to maintain, enjoy and keep road worthy. She's being sold as a driver quality and only needs the restoration i someone is wanting a show car. You've had 5...I stopped at this one and have enjoyed her as I hope someone will after me and keep her on the road.

  • petelewnes (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@DC911guy Hi there...unsure if they were ever replaced...I've driven her regularly for the past 20 years (at least 1 to 2 times a week in the nicer weather). I've done everything to keep her road worthy and ready to go. Body is exactly as I bought her...she's been stored in a heated garage with other classic cars. The underside has surface rust...I inspect underneath every year...nothing that's eaten through that I've noticed. She's a driver and is driven and enjoyed.

Nice car, definitely needs some love, who replaced the floors? There is rust along both sides under the door seal, looks like most of the bottom was replaced ? I’ve owned 5 there not for the faint of heart and finding good body shops without bankrupting the car would be my concern. Did it run of the stone or sit for most of the time? I’m very interested as I’m getting up there and want my lady 190sl without needing too much love . Receipts ? Back window soft top cracked up ? Seat tears , carpets need to be redone , original solexs? Thank you for bringing her to auction.

welcome to my auction...I'll be looking for any questions and answer them to the best of my ability...good luck in bidding on this most special of cars
