One of the purest and most unadulterated classic cars of all time, the 356 is descended from Ferdinand Porsche’s original sports car built in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria. This 1963 Porsche 356B 1600 Coupe wears Black-painted Karmann bodywork and is accompanied by a Kardex showing original delivery to the famous Competition Motors dealership in Hollywood, California. Retaining its numbers-matching engine, 356B is said to have been with its previous owner for over 40 years now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This Karmann Coupe came factory-painted in Black (6213) and is said to have been completely refinished during the 1980s after being driven through a sandstorm in Palm Springs, California. The seller describes the car to remain in good overall condition with lustrous chrome trim and indicates there is no evidence of rust or previous damage. The factory 15” chrome wheels are fitted with Porsche-crested hubcaps and new Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is appointed with black leatherette upholstery complemented by a body-colored dashboard and beige headliner. The seats are preserved under sheepskin covers and the footwells are lined with custom Coco floor mats. Other accessories include lap belts, pop-out quarter windows, a vintage AM/FM Volkswagen radio, a center-mounted VDO clock, and dashboard heater controls. The seller notes that all lights and electrical components work properly, the carpet and rear window area shows no signs of dampness, and the headliner and glass remain in great condition.

The rear wheels are driven by way of an air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. An inspection report indicates this 356B has completely new brakes and has passed all relevant checkpoints including a match between the engine and chassis numbers as well as rust-free suspension mounting points, longitudinal chassis members, and floor pans. The front end of the car is said to have been rebuilt, new shock absorbers have been installed, and the front suspension link pins are noted in good condition. The seller adds that after a cold start, the generator and oil pressure lights go out immediately, the engine makes no knocking or rumbling sounds during the test drive, and the gearshifts are smooth and easy to perform.

This sale will include a clean title and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

The seller would like you to know: “This 1963 Porsche 356B Coupe is a real gem among vintage sports cars. With only 88,900 original miles, this classic car is a true time capsule that has been preserved in excellent condition. The prior driver, who owned the car for over 40 years and was also the proprietor of the local Porsche/VW dealership in Medford, Oregon, had complete knowledge of its history. The car has never been in an accident and is completely rust-free, making it a rare find.”

@SnowLion I just looked very closely, it is the same writing style on the document, I have the original email from the person who sourced the document, I would provide that. But given the manual nature of the system, it is to be expected.

@Tpcarmarket I was told that since that card originates at the factory at the time of build, it can be changed based on the build process. The COA has the final number. As I told you, I sourced the Kardex from someone at Porsche, it was a scan or the original; that is all I know. I did not have it when I bought the car, only the COA.

can anyone tell us why the Kardex has 2 different motor numbers on it?

@TCar I have provided Kardex image to pCarmarket. Hopefully they can post it. I don’t have photos of the transmission or engine numbers. I had the car inspected and they verified them for me. I’m traveling this weekend and am not with car.

  • TCar (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@SnowLion, please supply picture of the Kardex. I I I see it says numbers matching engine, but is it also numbers matching transmission? We need a picture of engine # and transmission # as well.

@NWGreenhead Just want to verify I have both Oregon License Plates, 63-356 and they are in great shape.

  • SnowLion (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@NWGreenhead Thanks for you interest and note.

I do have service good documentation, for the work done over time. Yes, I’m glad to include the Oregon plate (I’m 95% sure I know where it is). The rubber is in really good shape, I had the drivers side window squeegee replaced a year or so ago. I have not seen fluid leaking, and I sweep under the car regularly. Let me know if you have additional questions. Jay

I would love to bring this car back to Oregon. Is there documentation included showing service work and maintenance /refurb work? Does the OR license plate go with the car? Are the rubber window and door seals intact? Does it leak fluids from the axle boots or other?
