This early 1963 Porsche 356C Coupe was originally configured for the Italian market and acquired by the seller some years ago from the esteemed Porsche factory race and test driver, Willi Kauhsen.  Throughout 2015, Kauhsen's workshop meticulously restored the car to near-concour condition with comprehensive work spanning the engine, gearbox, and front & rear axles.  Additionally, the engine was enlarged to 1,980cc and finely tuned to deliver a peak output of 135 HP.  The example presents a striking blue and silver finish over re-trimmed grey leather including sport seats and race-oriented amenities.  Awaiting its next chapter, this 356 is now being auctioned by its seller out of Georgia while being stored inside a climate-controlled garage.

Noteworthy for its accolades, this example secured a Werks Reunion Amelia Island 2022 award and achieved triple recognition at the Sandhills Motoring Festival 2023, including the Governor’s Award.  This Reutter-bodied Coupe comes finished in blue, bisected by a silver racing stripe.  Details include front hood straps, clear fog lights, headlamp grilles, a driver’s side mirror, and a center exhaust outlet. It rides on silver 16” slotted wheels with new Continental ProContact tires installed in 2023 within the last 500 miles.  Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been reupholstered and equipped for rallying, boasting leather sport seats, Schroth racing harnesses, a MotoLita wood-trimmed steering wheel, a rear-mounted fire extinguisher, and a roll bar.  Driver amenities include VDO instrumentation, additional stopwatches, a trip master, and a dash-mounted oil-pressure warning light.  All gauges, electronics, and accessories are confirmed to be in proper working order.

The air-cooled flat-four engine has been enlarged to 1,980cc and is said to provide up to 135 HP to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission.  Restoration items include an upgraded Porsche 912 crank and cam, 92mm pistons and cylinders, and new ball cup bushings and shift shaft seals.  An aftermarket sport-tuned exhaust was also fitted.  Further enhancements included wheel stud replacements and a 4-wheel alignment, powder-coating the engine tin, installation of a new distributor, a carburetor rebuild, and a conversion to a 12v electrical system.  The steering box also underwent a comprehensive rebuild and resealing process.

This 356 is offered with a bill of sale, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, a car cover, and some documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “This car has not only been extensively restored but it is a head turner winning multiple awards at several car shows including Werks Reunion Amelia Island 2022.  At Sandhills Motoring Festival 2023, it won 3 awards at the Concours including the Governor's Award.  The car needs nothing except to be loved.  It drives very well, stops, and goes down the Interstate straight without pulling.  You can travel all day (and I have) at 80 plus MPH.  The car can be returned to a stock 356 (with a hot engine) with only a couple hours of work.  Drive this car, it will love you for it.  The only reason for the sale is leaving my current house with 10-car garage and moving to FL.  So off go the toys.  Currently being kept in a climate-controlled garage.”

@tubby356 I’m selling these cars cause I’m moving to Florida. We bought a house here yesterday yesterday and today I went to the DMV and they assured me there’d be no problem getting a title for that car so it will go back on the market once I get a title.

I spoke to soon be fore . I was at Broadarrow Sat. and they did have a 914-6 that sold on bill of sale. But it was announced bill of sale and stated not street legal in Calif. Must have title to register it. Also if a car built after 1975 cannot be modified to pass smog in Calif. to be sold here. I was biding on the 1952 but went over my max. I think you have done well and should let it go for 100k.

@tubby356 Broad arrow and Hagerty wanted several of my cars for last weeks auction at the fairgrounds the 356 included. The reason I didn’t give them the cars is because I didn’t want a 1099 from California making California think I was still doing business there even though I left nine years ago and they’re still chasing me for tax returns. So there are three cars that the auction company not only would touch but wanted badly.

Rules have not changed much here in Calif. I have owned 78 cars in my lifetime. Do like your car even though some things have been removed. A lot of classic cars go thru auctions and there is no auction company that will touch a car without a title.

@drb930 in a sense it has been removed but in a sense, it’s also been completely open. Anyone that has had a 356 realizes there was no real ventilation. There is a two or 3 inch round opening leading from frunk to cockpit. They are now fully open and provide good ventilation. Of course, operable wing windows go a long way for ventilation.

  • rhart (seller) 3 days, 3 hoursago

@tubby356 I would suggest things are different now than they were 50 years ago. There are numerous states that don’t do titles

  • tubby356 (registered bidder) 3 days, 4 hoursago

I will debate your statement that it can be registered in any state on a bill of sale. I bought a 69 MGB gt over 50 years ago with NY plates and it took over a year to register it. I had to back to the dealership that sold the car new and get paperwork proving the car was sold. I am in Calif and would not go thru that again.

@Outlaw911 I tried to track Willie down but to no avail. Someone suggested he has passed. I tried to get information from the UK auction that sold the car when it left Europe. But they don’t keep paperwork that far back. At the end of the photos, I did put the information they put in their catalog from that auction but was unsuccessful in getting any hard documentation

  • Outlaw911 (registered bidder) 3 days, 19 hoursago

Beautiful 356, do you have any other documents that validate the connection to Willie?

@rhmoritz Yes, all stickers and decals are removable. Racing stripes are painted on and clearcoated so they are not removable. The car does not have a functioning heater. What I have done in the past on other Porsches is purchase thin aftermarket heated seat pads and placed them under the leather inserts. Available on Amazon and other places, a little switch that turns them on and off sits under the seat. There are three auxiliary plugs under the dash that various things like cell phones can be plugged into. All lights and gauges work, including the big red light that warns of oil pressure failure, and the turn signals cancel properly.

  • rhart (seller) 4 days, 7 hoursago

@DPommery Yes, it can be registered in any state, including New Jersey and Florida

  • rhart (seller) 4 days, 7 hoursago

@jwestracing Georgia is registration only state they will not issue a title for a car this old. Ironically, New York doesn’t either. I believe there are eight or 10 states that do not issue titles. They are registration only states. If your state is title state just take the registration there with bill sale and they will issue you a title. I’m sure Pcarmarket will validate this.

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 4 days, 7 hoursago

Are the stickers and decals removable? Does the car have a functioning heater? All gauges and lights work. Thanks.

Can a car sold on a bill of sale be registered in NJ or Florida?

  • Rjeter (registered bidder) 4 days, 16 hoursago

It’s a pretty blue color.. Of all the different Porsches I’ve owned since my white 1971 914/6 it’s not my favorite blue, but close.. My 1979 poster color blue 930 Turbo was sexy and the Ferrari Ca blue PTS on my Wife’s 2012 911 Turbo S is amazing in the sun.. I’ve never owned a 356…

@rhmoritz Suspension looks pretty standard to me. It has been lowered a bit but suspension is still supple.

  • Miked2020 (registered bidder) 1 weekago

Thank you for letting me know that the engine was rebuilt and by whom!!!! I have always wanted a 356 with the disc brakes.

@Miked2020 Rob from German Car Service here in Savannah did the engine. He is a genius on all Porsche engines. Any serious Porsche car guy in this region knows this. Problem is you have to wait in line bec he does one at a time. I forgot to photo the receipts and other paperwork which I just did a few min ago. Not sure when Pcar will get the up, but it shouldn't be too long. I'm not sure where Willi's workshop is. I tried to get in touch with him but to no avail. A couple of his old racing friends thought he may have passed. Please note photos 76 and 77 and a couple of others. I think he had the chassis and perhaps other endeavors done by Classic Racing Cars of Germany

@dansolly If you check the photos you will see it is a disc brake car. Also, the car got registered as a 1963. More than likely due to Europeans using the build date as the registered date. If you check Brett Johnson's book "The 356 Porsche" you will see the VIN number for this car was built after July 1963. Cars built after July were always considered to be the following year's cars during the 60's 70"s and 80's. The book also shows this car's VIN to be on a 356 C. Most Americans think the C model was only built in '64 and '65 but in fact they were started in late 1963. All 356 C cars received disc brakes.

  • dansolly 1 week, 2 daysago

Drum brakes or upgraded to disc brakes?

  • rhart (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

Hello lookers. This car is as pristine as the photos show and I welcome anyone to come by to view and or drive the car. The car is more than capable of driving anywhere if you wish to drive it home and I encourage you to do so. I've pretty much captured all the possible views including the little hidey holes that contain rust in lesser cars. The engine was rebuilt a month or so ago and has only logged 100 miles or so, so will need to have break in oil changed out if you are going to go a long distance. Let me know if you have any questions. I bought my first Porsche in 56 years ago (a 356) and have been driving P cars ever since.
