The 230SL was the first model to be offered as part of the W113 series and was produced up until 1967. Presenting an iconic "Pagoda" roof design, the Mercedes-Benz 230SL is powered by a fuel-injected 2.3L inline-six-cylinder engine. This 1964 example comes finished in white over a red interior and features a desirable 4-speed manual transmission. Benefitting from recent maintenance, this SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.

The design of the W113 was inspired by its predecessors the 190SL and 300SL roadsters, but is widely known for its unique "Pagoda" hardtop. Finished in white, this SL features a matching removable hardtop with a black convertible top and rides on a set of 14” steel wheels with chrome covers. The seller states that the car retains most of its original paint however some parts have been refinished and some paint imperfections are noted. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is upholstered in red leather and features new seats, wood trim, and an AM/FM stereo. Equipment includes a VDO analog clock and instrumentation and a locking glove box. The seller notes that the stereo has been disconnected and recommends re-dying the leather.

Powered by an M127 2.3-liter inline-six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. Recent maintenance includes a new steering box, coolant expansion tank, brakes and calipers, suspension bushings, inner and outer tie rods, and wheel bearings. The seller has also installed engine, ignition, and fuel system cut-off switches.

This sale will include a window sticker, a spare tire, an air pump, a sales brochure, miscellaneous parts, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “In this world where everything is about show, I assure you that this car, is 100%, it runs and drives like a top, I take it on hundred-mile trips when it’s nice out, and it never gets hotter than when it started, it runs, true, it runs strong, and is extremely reliable for anyone who is looking for a car like that, the seats are brand new Rebuilt from Germany with period, correct leather, as well as patterns, it has the original carpeting. Correct not the newer, non-period, correct carpeting, the door cards are in fantastic shape, they could use a red dye, but other than that this car is 100%. Rennworke Porsche went through the entire car with a fine-tooth comb and corrected everything to make it reliable. The car has a completely straight frame and was never hit, all of the panels are original, as the pictures depict. All of the original body earmarks are as noted, headlights, fender doors, ECT… the car has nearly 0 rust, I left on all the Cosmoline because I intended this car to be a daily driver, and it is! With nominal work, this car could be a number two car... meanwhile, it runs and drives like a dream... it cruises at 75 miles an hour at 3000 RPM…”

Congratulations to the buyer! You will be getting a well sorted pagoda, remember these have more chrome than the 280s, and to me they just looked a lot sweeter and more approachable, rest, assured, this car will not give you any problems on the road, if that’s what you’re after!

  • Warpig (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

I hear what you’re saying, the fenders weld spots, have thick paint over them, they filled it in, that area should get touched up as well, if you are going to repaint, but if you look very closely, some sort of thick paint or putty was put over them. They fix them to the best of my knowledge, and I’m not trying to deceive anyone under inspection, looked original, you could see the niches at the front around the headlights as well

@ Seller you mentioned all panels are original? It's obvious that the front fenders have been replaced original spot weld marks are missing. Also the entire car needs to be repainted. All said the Pagoda's are beautiful cars.

Just to let everyone know, the motor runs perfectly, no problems or no unusual sounds ,Renwork did a compression test, and I called yesterday to get the numbers, but he threw out the result sheet, the numbers were exceptionally good, through all cylinders, not more than 1 pound differential, if it Hass to be part of the sale with the compression test, I can get it redone

No, it does not have the kinder seat option.

  • Warpig (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Yes, that's the beauty of it! it was not replaced.... take a look at the gear shifter boot it has a slight tear, in order to remove and replace, you must remove the carpet. Thats why the boot was not redone... It is very hard or nearly impossible to get the original carpet. Even the best restoration shops, use the later carpet from the newer 280'S. it's very hard to catch... most everyone does the door cards, seats and carpets incorrectly ... Not to say that that I am an expert, but it takes a very trained eye to see these items. I myself had to be taught this. I just got lucky.

  • Prancinghorse (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Seller, you say the carpet is original but the transmission tunnel carpet looks fresh and the kinder seat area behind the seats? Can you please comment?

  • Warpig (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

I encourage anyone who is truly interested in the car, to call Renwork Porsche in Elmsford, New York, Cheech will give you an honest appraisal on the car, he will absolutely pull, no punches, he spent 173 hours on the car, and he will tell you that. He charged me half the number which reflects in the 15,000 and change, on the receipt. I had two other cars there at the same time. I am not a dealer or anything like that. I just love cars, like a lot of you out there I have this crazy obsession , I love to buy cars, drive them for a while, and then sell them, I lose money every single time

  • Warpig (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Yes, there is some very minor rust spots, but the car is an exceptional car with minimal rust, the hardtop is, as it appears, it does have somewhere, it was actually hard to put it up because it was very cold when I did it, and it was sitting like that for quite some time. The plastic in the rear window as well as the top doesn’t stretch well when it’s very cold and when I photo the car, it was approximately 28°.

Nice car. There appears to be some rust below the right rear bumper and rear lower panel. Comment please. Also the soft top looks in rough condition. Is that because it has remained folded and stored and you used the hard top. How hard is it to put up anc take down the soft top and hard top? Thank you.

The radio is just disconnected, the previous owner had another stereo in there and an amplifier. those wires are still there behind the dash.
