The final evolution of Porsche's iconic 356 sports car, the Super Carrera (SC) was introduced featuring the brand's most powerful pushrod-type engine to date. This 1964 Porsche 356SC Coupe is refinished in Light Ivory over a black vinyl interior and is powered by a rebuilt 1.6-liter flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with rebuilt Solex 40 PII-4 carburetors, a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ steel wheels, and more. Sold new in Germany, this 356SC was eventually imported to the U.S. and has remained under the care of its owner since 1989. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia.

This 356SC was factory-finished in Ruby Red and underwent a repaint in its current Light Ivory color in the early 1990s. It features twin engine cover grilles, a driver-side mirror, rear reflectors, and body-color bumpers with chrome guards. The 15” steel wheels come embellished with chrome hubcaps with Porsche crests and are wrapped in a new set of Vredestein Sprint Classic V tires. The seller notes a past accident involving the driver's rear quarter before the repaint, resulting in slight misalignment in the bracing of the engine compartment inside the rear fender. However, there is no other evidence of body or frame repair reported. The exterior shows signs of road-going wear including paint chips along the leading edges of the front clip, door edges, and other outer components. A slight dent is present where the rear bumper is affixed to the fender. Some areas also exhibit bubbling indicative of rust formation, although these spots are isolated and are approximately pea-sized according to the seller. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin showcases black vinyl seats that were reupholstered around 2004, accompanied by matching door panels and gray carpets. The dash presents its factory-specified red finish and has been wrapped in black vinyl. The gauges are said to remain original, except for the tachometer, which currently displays a 'C' trim instead of the original 'SC' designation. The carpet, floor mats, and rubber lower floor coverings are reportedly original, and one area of wear is noted near the driver's foot, likely from scuffing over time near the door sill. The headliner is said to be free of stains, and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel has been installed. The seller notes that the two cabin lights as well as the speedometer, odometer, and clock are currently non-functional.

The 1.6-liter Type 616/16 flat-four engine underwent a rebuild in 2004 by Foreign Intrigue of Maine. Moreover, the car received recent services in February 2024 including a rebuild of the Solex 40 PII-4 carburetors using a Stoddard kit, installation of new air pumps, Bosch ignition points, and a new coil, along with a thorough cleaning of the fuel system. Additionally, a Willhoit front sway bar was fitted during the same period. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, spare parts, a factory steering wheel, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This SC was enjoyed by its owner over the course of 3 decades and was never far from arms reach. It was kept up mechanically and always garaged, so it would be ready whenever visiting one of the family's part-time homes in Maine, New York, and Virginia. A longtime admirer and sometimes participant in hill climb events in period, this was the Porsche he kept longest but used for spirited driving only.”

Good morning all and welcome to the last day of bidding on this classic aircooled Porsche. I just wanted to thank those who have reached out for more information as well as those who have already placed bids. As a special treat, the owners sent me a few vintage photographs of the car as it roamed the countryside of the Northern Neck in Virginia, circa 1996, which I have added to the gallery. The current owners hope the winning bidder will make many new memories in this car!

I will be available throughout the end of the auction, so please don't hesitate to reach out, and I would encourage you to look through the gallery and comments to see if your questions might have already been answered.

The auction is set to end around 3pm EST, so best of luck and bid to win!
    Cheers, Jeremy

@ppalmer yes those are drain holes for the battery compartment. The glass is very nice around the car, windshield is near perfect. And sorry, no original tool roll, just the items pictured. Thank you for the questions.

@Somer by misaligned I believe the writer meant that the bracing, which is a piece of channeled metal connecting the body to the engine compartment, illustrated in picture #319, is twisted slightly, as in, it was not straitened during the process of body work before the paintwork was performed.

Hi in picture 272 & 277 are there holes there ? How is the glass ?
Do you have the original toll kit ?
    Thank You
    Paul

For those interested, I have received a few requests for more information on the status of any apparent rust, to which I can assure you that the floors, battery box area, and rockers are all in very serviceable condition. You would not be poking a screw driver through any of these areas without a sledgehammer behind the blow. The rust present on the undercarriage is where the finish has rubbed or been worn off, and presents as surface rust only.

Also, I came across a nice video from Jay Leno's Garage on the SC, and thought to include the link here. It's red, too, which might give you some idea of how the car might look of restored to original spec.

@Pilpherjack the case numbers (all 3) read #668 and the engine reads #820074 which corresponds to an SC motor of the same year of manufacture, however I cannot confirm originality as Porsche withheld the engine number information when I inquired and purchased the Certificate of Authenticity. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, we too were disappointed when they decided to omit the original numbers for chassis 130316.

Is this a matching numbers car?

@artichoke The clocks frequently come back to life with a good cleaning ad oiling of the internals. Odometer works so cable is intact so speedometer head will need to be removed and sent out to a VDO specialist to get the speedometer working. Not a big deal.

Hi @artichoke thanks for your questions. While I don't have any information on the fender bender from all those many years ago, the damage is currently limited to a bent piece of bracing between the driver rear quarter and the engine compartment, and is shown clearly in photos #318 and #319.
You might also get a good look at the undercarriage in the gallery. There are minor areas of surface rust on the lower suspension components, but rust on the body of the car is very minimal and mostly shown in photos.
The car was not brought down to full bare metal, but the paint is quite uniform. I will include pictures using a paint depth meter tomorrow, Thursday.
Lastly, the inoperable items, i.e the speedo and clock, are likely electrical items that just need a learned Porsche mechanic to sort out.
Hope this information helps, please keep an eye out for additional photos tomorrow.
    Thank you

Clearly not a garage queen, but sounds like a reliable driver!

Any info on the severity of the accident and the resulting issue in the engine bay?

Any info on the few items listed as not functioning?

Any rust visible on the undercarriage?

Was the refinish down to metal with all rust removed?

    Thanks,

    Bob

Good morning all and thank you for viewing our 1964 SC. We will try our best during the auction to address your questions in quick fashion. In response to @defenderdelray, yes, we will get you several videos asap. We have been dealing with wet weather here in Virginia but have a wonderful week ahead and will be able to get a short driving video, as well as cold start, and walkaround, this Thursday.

This SC is an excellent driver with great power and smooth transmission, tight suspension and strong brakes, with working driving lights and signals. The selling family has loved their Porsche for many years and will be sorry to see it go, having grown up with their loving father who enjoyed driving this 356 as often as he could.

I am representing the car for the owning family, and will do my best. In addition to the videos, I will include photos of the tool kit and original items/spare parts, but I will be near the car all weekend should there be any more requests for details.

Thank you once again for looking, please feel confident in bidding on this wonderful 356 SC.
    Cheers, Jeremy
