Up for auction is this 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster replica by Classic Motor Carriages.  Based upon the chassis of a 1976 VW Beetle, this Speedster replica was built by CMC between the 1980s-90s and features handcrafted fiberglass bodywork in the style of a classic Porsche 356A 1600 Super Speedster.  The air-cooled 1641cc flat-four has been recently rebuilt and the car has been thoroughly refreshed with new brakes, wiring, and interior upholstery.  With barely 16km (10 miles) driven on the rebuilt engine, this handsome Ruby Red Speedster replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio.

The classic Ruby Red paint is noted to have been recently block-sanded and buffed to a lustrous finish.  All of the exterior brightwork is also noted to have been recently replaced including the bumper guards, headlight rings, horn grilles, light surrounds, hood bar, emblems, and side moldings.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  Removable Mobil Pegasus logos have been added to either side along with a Stuttgart badge on the rear decklid grille.  The car is accompanied by a tan convertible top with matching side curtains and a tonneau cover.  It rides on 15” Fuchs-style wheels dressed in Nankang CX-668 tires.

The cabin has been recently upholstered with new grey square weave carpeting and tan leather seat covers.  A wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel has also been added along with an EMPI shifter with reverse lockout.  The Vintage Reproduction gauges include a km/h speedometer, 6k-RPM tachometer, and meters for fuel level and battery amperage.  The odometer currently shows approximately 16km which is said to reflect the distance traveled since the recent engine rebuild.  A true driver-focused car, there is no air conditioning or sound system present.  All gauges and electrical functions are said to be working properly.

Power is derived from an air-cooled 1641cc flat-four engine that recently underwent a complete rebuild including a new carburetor, alternator, sport exhaust, and sound insulation for the engine compartment.  The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual IRS 3:88 manual gearbox.  The brakes were recently rebuilt with new pads, cylinders, drums, and brake lines.  The car was also completely rewired by Alan Merklin including the installation of a new style fuse box.

This sale will include a tan convertible top, side curtains, tonneau cover, and a clean title for a 1976 Volkswagen.  With its classic styling and thrilling open-air driving experience, this Speedster replica is just waiting for its next owner to get behind the wheel.

  • Flyman615 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @CCCltd Thank you! It appears the car has no seat belts. Is that correct?

  • CCCltd (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @Flyman615 I have uploaded additional photos.

  • Flyman615 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @CCCltd Thanks for the information.
    Could you please provide photos with the top up and side curtains installed?

    Thanks again!

  • CCCltd (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @Flyman615 Do you have a horsepower estimate for the re-built motor? The horsepower is roughly 75 hp.
    Is the Volkswagen VIN used for registration? No it has an assigned VIN which we will upload a photo of.
    Where does it appear on the car? It is located on the inside of the drivers door. The original VW vin is stamped on the chassis but the carpet is glued in and covering it.
    I notice there is no front PORSCHE gold badge. Will one accompany the car? We do not have one currently, however we can purchase one and include it with the car upon request.

    This is one of the nicest CMC cars that we have seen. Quality is comparable to the original Vintage Speedster replicas when they were still in California. Those cars are routinely selling from the mid $40's to$60,000+ as seen here on PCarmarket and Bring a Trailer. You can own this one for significantly less! Questions, let us know.

    Hello everyone, I am John Michalak with CentralClassicCars.com. We have a wide selection of Vintage VW's as well as number of Speedster Replica's and felt this was a great car to bring to this audience of buyers. We are very excited to bring you this car with a fresh engine rebuild and new interior carpeting. The vehicle runs and drives very well and has an excellent look to it. If you have any questions please let me know and I would be glad to answer them for you.
