This 1964 Volkswagen 1500 Notchback underwent a body-off restoration in the mid-to-late 2000s followed by several tasteful modifications. It is finished in silver over a black and grey tweed/velour interior and features a host of upgrades, including a refurbished transmission, narrowed arms, lowered spindles, adjustable air shocks, an aluminum roller pedal, a T-handle short shifter, a 1966 Nardi steering wheel, and much more. The centerpiece of the build is a 2,054cc high-performance engine that was installed in 2022 along with a high-performance cooling system. Said to have been driven less than 2k miles since the engine installation and fresh from a recent service, this modified Notchback is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This 1500 Notchback is said to have been refinished in a shade of silver borrowed from Porsche's color palette. It has been converted to a California look, including one-piece driver and passenger door windows and solid rubber window seals. Details include chrome front and rear bumpers, upper chrome pinstripes that run from the headlight to taillight, lower chrome pinstripes that run along the rocker panels, driver’s and passenger’s side mirrors, front and rear factory turn signal lenses, yellow fog lights, and a wooden roof rack. It rides on aftermarket Flat 4 BRM wheels dressed in 12-year-old tires that are in need of replacement. The seller notes some minor cosmetic blemishes, and the sale will include the factory hood trim, new rubber, and rear pop-out windows. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is fitted with its original seats which have been reupholstered with black tweed, complemented by an aftermarket black velour headliner, carpeting, door panels, and grey floor mats. Interior details include an early 1964 “push-button” dash, a 1966 3-spoke wood-trimmed Nardi steering wheel, an aluminum roller pedal, roll-up windows, and a tweed basket that runs along the underside of the dash that can be used for storage. The seller notes that the speedometer does not function due to a lack of a hollow driver’s side front spindle and that the ignition switch has been modified with a hidden button for security.
This modified Notchback is equipped with a full-flow Type 3 2054cc high-performance engine that was built by Jim Bass in Sacramento, CA. It was installed new in 2022 and is said to have been driven less than 2k miles. Features of the engine and cooling system include large valves, dual spring heads, new HPMX 44mm carburetors with RamFlo air filters, a thin oil sump, a new external oil cooler with a fan and stainless lines with AN fittings, a custom air scoop under the car to direct air to the oil cooler, a VDO temperature gauge, a new complete 009 distributor, new wires and plugs, and a new high-output alternator conversion. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed Freeway Flyer manual transmission with a Type 3 swing axle that was rebuilt as part of the restoration with short axles in order to accommodate wider rear wheels. Additionally, the Type 3 beams are said to have been converted to disc brakes. The seller also installed an EMPI short shifter T-handle with a thumb-button reverse lockout, and the front shocks are said to have been recently replaced with adjustable air shocks. The seller notes that a new stage 2 clutch, throwout bearing, throwout bearing arm, bushings, and springs were installed in 2021 and the fluid was replaced in 2022. A professional carburetor tune, valve adjustment, and oil change are said to have taken place within the last 100 miles. The sale includes a new spare alternator and belt.

@CurtGT3RS To provide more clarity, the vehicle did not travel many miles in my ownership. I garaged it and drove it once a month or so for 20-30 miles plus one or two local VW shows a year. I upgraded the engine recently and have yet to replace the tires.
@CurtGT3RS Hello. The engine work totals over $5k. I never replaced the tires as they still had decent tread since I purchased the vehicle. I recommend replacing with the same size as existing because they fit perfectly. The car has a 12v conversion. The fog lights are not currently wired in. Hi - you spent $$ on the engine, why are the tires 12 years old? What condition are the brakes in? Is the car still 6 volt? Anything not functioning correctly?
I bought a 1965 1500S Notchback in 1976 in San Frasncisco. These were never offered in the domestic market- they had to be brought in to the country by private owners. Mine came from Austria. I rebuilt the motor with dual-port heads and upgraded parts and threw some Bilsteins and Michelins on there and drove it to Costa Rica. Fopr lack of a place to store it while flying off to Bolivia I left it on the beach in Playa Cocos. When I returned the car was still there, albiet with a dead battery- and had scratched on the truck "Julio." Some kid's name no doubt. So from that point forward we called the car Julio. NEver converted it from 6 Volt to 12 Volt.. so all the way down the Pan-American Higway we had to crawl under the car with a screwdriver to arc the solenoid to the starter to start it. A total joy to drive- remember the car comes with 15" wheels and a longer-legged gearbox so these have better top end than the bugs. This example offered here is likely the cleanest example of this rare little bird you will find. GLWA to the seller and eventual buyer!

Beautiful!! Brings back memories of the '71 Type 3 Squareback I had as a first car in '94. Pretty decent shape and only cost $1,500 at the time. I enhanced the engine to 1904cc when the original cracked a valve. Couldn't deal without the AC after a few years and sold it, but the sound of this one's engine brought me back.
