Up for auction is this 1965 Chevrolet C2 Corvette Stingray Convertible finished in Rally Red over a black leather interior.  The second generation of Chevrolet’s Corvette sports car, the C2 introduced the iconic Stingray name and debuted all-new styling and a new chassis with improved steering, brakes, and suspension.  Powered by a 327 Small Block V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, this 1965 example spent time in the Midwest where it had been restored before making its way to the West Coast.  Accompanied by service records dating back to 2012 showing a comprehensive amount of maintenance, this desirable 4-speed Corvette Stingray is now being offered by its seller out of Washington.

Designed by Larry Shinoda, the styling of the C2 was largely inspired by Jaguar E-Type and the original Corvette XP-87 Stingray racing concept car of 1959.  For the 1965 model year, the Corvette featured a new smoother-looking hood, restyled rocker panel moldings, and triple vertical vents in the front fenders.  This fiberglass bodywork of this Stingray comes finished in Rally Red and is believed to have been completely repainted during a frame-on restoration prior to 2012.  The seller describes the exterior to be nicely presented apart from some minor paint chips, pitting on the chrome bumpers, and general signs of patina as depicted in the photo gallery.  The folding convertible top also bears a small hole towards the rear passenger side.  The 15" wheels retain their factory covers with spinners and come dressed in period-correct Goodyear radial whitewall tires.

Inside, the black leather interior remains well kept with few imperfections, most notably slight peeling on the passenger-side armrest.  The cabin of the Stingray carried over the twin-cowl dash style from the original Corvette while incorporating a cowl ventilation system, a heater, and a spacious glove box.  The control tower center console houses an analog clock, chrome control knobs, and a vertically mounted radio.  The parking brake indicator light is said to come on intermittently and the power antenna may not be fully extending, and the seller confirms all other accessories and instrumentation to be working properly.

This Stingray is equipped with a 327ci (5.4L) Small Block V8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor and a factory-rated output of 300 HP.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a desirable 4-speed manual transmission.  The seller reports both the engine and gearbox to be original to the car, images of the case stampings are provided in the gallery. The new chassis of the C2 Corvette offered a shorter wheelbase than its predecessor and incorporated a faster recirculating ball steering system, independent rear suspension, and a standard front anti-roll bar.  The 1965 model year also saw the introduction of four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston calipers.  Service records dating as far back as 2012 show several oil changes, replacement of rear wheel bearings, spark plugs, a new battery and battery tray, heater hose, master cylinder, gas door assembly, air cleaner, speedometer rebuild, ignition kit, wheel alignment, rear left brake caliper replacement, a new starter, distributor cap and rotor, and various suspension parts including rear lower control arm bushings. Invoices are available for reference in the photo gallery.

This sale will include a collection of service records and a clean title.  A true American sports car icon, this 4-speed 1965 Corvette awaits its next caretaker.

@mayart - I was focused on the most recent bids. I do believe you are correct!

  • mayart (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I tried refreshing it a few times, but it still shows the same. Do you see a bid in between the two bids of $21999 and $31999

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@mayart - try refreshing as I don't see it that way, but that is always a bit funny when it appears that way!

  • mayart (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@tdskip did you just bid against yourself? First a $21999 bid 15 hours ago and now a 31999 bid just 2 hours ago...wow

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Hello all bidders, we're down to the final 90 minutes and I just wanted to wish you all well and cheer you on as the clock ticks down on this amazing Corvette. I truly do hope that it goes on to a great new home today.

I certainly do wish I could give more clarity to some of the questions asked, and I'm not avoiding anything, just don't want to pass along anything misleading. This one is a fantastic driver with awesome overall condition, presents well, drives well, and is generally just a joy. Plenty of receipts in a book along with ownership history going back to 2009 and service history going back to 2012.

@RumbleAuto @stevetheodore Thanks, just trying to get some idea of the bird cage condition. Don't know if anyone has looked in the glove box after removal or the condition of the lower radiator core support for rust.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Skenn1977 - I have been in touch with the current owner (I am consigning this car for him) and he has reached out to the owner before him. We believe the car to be original but cannot fully authenticate every part of it...so we do not want to misrepresent anything. We did try to ask specifically about the frame/sub-frame but could not get anything concrete back.

Please do look at the photos provided, including the newer photos I took from underneath the car. If there is anything specific you want to see that I can reasonably accommodate, I'll be glad to do it of course. Thank you very much, and we appreciate all the great interest in this Corvette.

anything you can tell us about the condition of the frame and sub-structure? Assume numbers matching on engine, body, trans per description of original?

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

To all bidders, the requested underside photos have been posted by PCARMARKET and are now at the bottom of the photos on the right hand side, or will show up as the last photos added to the gallery. Thanks so much!

@carcraze19 - Not sure if they work on weekends to do the uploading, but I provided them with quite a few more photos yesterday.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@carcraze19 - The engine had been started briefly a few hours earlier that day. I wanted to be accurate in my description, as it wasn't the first time that day that the car had been started. If you prime the carburetor by pushing the gas pedal a couple times, it starts up well. But, that was on filming day and I wanted to be 100% accurate with my description, that's all.

  • carcraze19 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I don’t see the under chassis photos. Is PCAR uploading them?

  • carcraze19 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Why did you do a semi cold start? Does it run extremely rough on a full cold start? Seems odd??

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@carcraze19 - as I don't have access to a proper lift but want to give you photos to help everyone with their bidding, I carefully lifted the side of the drivers side of the car today and took a variety of underbody photos that I just uploaded to PCAR. Hoping they share them in the gallery here shortly.

If anyone else has any questions, wants to see anything specific, or wants to see the car in person, please do let me know. Thanks to all bidders!

  • carcraze19 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Can you post some detailed underbody chassis photos so we can see how much rust there is on the chassis. Also can you verify the condition/rust in bird cage. Is this a complete numbers matching car? Thanks

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Thanks for your bid to start things off @TJ
