Built specifically for racing under SCCA regulations, the original Shelby Mustang GT350R featured a special lightweight design and a race-modified 289 “K Code” engine which earned the car numerous championship victories in 1965. Only 36 examples were built and now command prices well over $1M due to their esteemed heritage and rarity. This 1965 Ford Mustang was completed as a GT350R tribute car in 2011 under the care of a prominent Shelby Club member and collector in Florida. It uses high-quality parts, many of which were sourced from Cobra Automotive in Connecticut including a custom-built 332ci motor, Galaxy 11” rear brakes, a heavy-duty racing driveshaft, and a 9” limited-slip rear end. It was acquired by the current owner about 9 years ago and has since been maintained and upgraded by McGee Motorsports in Sonoma, CA. It has been driven just over 2k miles by the current owner and is said to have been used primarily for car shows as well as the occasional track outing for mechanical exercise. This Shelby GT350R tribute is now being offered for auction by its owner out of California.

This Mustang has been converted to GT350R specs with the installation of a fiberglass R-model front valence and hood, custom side-exit racing exhaust pipes, and lightweight pull-up Lexan windows with aluminum frames. Other details include an external cutoff switch, rear window retaining clips, R-model trunk latch delete panels, and rear quarter air vent covers. It was finished in the iconic theme of Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue racing stripes and features a small aluminum rear spoiler that was installed on the trunk lid by the previous owner. The seller notes another wind deflector was also previously mounted on the hood, although it has been removed and three small holes remain in its place. The car rides on 15” Torque Thrust wheels dressed in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Another set of 15”x7” Torque Thrust racing wheels and Goodyear tires are included which were purchased about 5 years ago and have been used for 4 track events.

The lightweight interior features aluminum door panel and rear seat latch delete plates, a fiberglass rear seat shelf with spare mounting, an R-model Shelby instrument cluster, a Hurst competition shifter, and an authentic period-correct 1965 racing seat from Cobra Restorers. Other accessories include a 4-point R-model style roll bar, a quick-release Nardi steering wheel, a full R-model 5-point driver’s racing harness, a 4-point passenger safety harness, a Ford Motorsports brake bias controller, an R-model radio and heater delete, an authentic Ford cigarette lighter delete, and a fire suppression system with extinguisher nozzles in the engine, trunk, and passenger area. The seller notes all lights, gauges, and accessories work apart from the window wipers and fuel gauge which is incompatible with the aftermarket fuel cell.

Power comes from a Cobra Automotive 331ci stroked 302 V8 engine featuring a Holman Moody high-rise aluminum intake, a BLP Performance blueprinted Holley double-pump carburetor, MSD 6-AL electronic ignition, R-style steel valve covers, Cobra Automotive machined aluminum pulleys, and a triple-core Griffin aluminum racing radiator. Other engine parts include a Cobra Automotive high-volume mechanical fuel pump, an 8-quart aluminum Aviaid oil pan, an original Ford engine brace, a Ford Racing oil cooler, Hedman Tri-Y headers, and a period-correct R-model Autolite alternator. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed Toploader transmission featuring a Centerforce clutch and flywheel, a Cobra Automotive heavy-duty racing driveshaft, Spicer yoke and U-joints, and a 9” Traction Loc posi rear-end with 3.89 gears and 31 spline Mosler axles.

A Flaming River quick-ratio steering box is equipped, and the suspension includes adjustable Koni shocks, heavy-duty springs, and a 1” competition front sway bar. The braking system features Galaxy 11” rear brakes, heavy-duty front discs, new Carbotech front brake pads, stainless-steel lines, and Cobra Automotive cooling ducts. The car has been professionally maintained and race-prepped by McGee Motorsports and the most recent service was completed by MotoVisions in Danville, CA, including repairing a small oil leak and replacing the pilot and throwout bearings on the clutch.

This sale will include a clean title, a collection of records, and a set of additional wheels. 

 
 

The seller would like you to know:  This car was built in 2011 by a prominent Shelby Club member and car collector in Florida. He sourced a rust-free, clean 1965 Mustang body/chassis for this build and subsequently sourced the highest quality products for this Shelby tribute, many of them from Cobra Automotive in Connecticut (including custom-built engine, brakes, driveline, suspension parts, oil cooler, 9" ltd. slip rear end). All receipts come with the car. The owner decided to sell this car for a newer model. After a lengthy cross-country search for a high-quality street/track Shelby Tribute, I found and acquired this car from Pathfinder Motorsports in Florida in July 2014 with approximately 3,300 miles. Shortly after purchase, this car received safety, performance upgrades, and regular servicing by a top-flight shop, McGee Motorsports in Sonoma CA. I had them install a fire suppression system, Koni shocks all around, Carbotech front brake pads, and a fuel cell. During my 9 years of ownership, I have added 2,300 miles (250 miles/year). Primarily driven for car shows, to Monterey to watch the races and on 4 occasions I took the car on track to safely stretch its legs. Today, this car is ready for whatever your pleasure is; cruising your local town, cars and coffee, vintage car shows, or track days with your local Shelby club.”

    I’ve uploaded the engine build specs from Cobra Automotive and the dyno sheet. I called to the shop that dyno tested the engine: the peak HP (measured at the crank) is 412 @ 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque is 377 lbs/ft @ 4,700 rpm.
    The original 1965 R model GT 350 weighed 2,550 lbs. This car follows the Carroll Shelby build sheet closely and has many similar components. I don’t have the exact weight figure for my car, but safe to say it is likely between 2,600-2,700 lbs wet. This car is very responsive to throttle inputs !

    Thanks for viewing my 1965 GT 350 R tribute auction. I have owned this car for 9 years and during this time it has been garaged and well cared for. I am thinning my herd of cars (at age 71). This car needs to be run, shown, raced and enjoyed by you perhaps. It has been upgraded during my ownership to be equally at home on your local roads or run at a track day. It comes with a spare set of brand new Torque Thrust 15x7 rims and Goodyear bias ply vintage style tires (2018). My focus on all mod's has been on quality and safety. I have added a fuel cell, koni shocks, hi performance front brake pads, shorty mufflers and a new fire system. The car has only 4 track days and has never been abused. I am happy to answer any questions that you may have. The car is licensed in CA, clean title and ready for a new home. Thank you. Greg
