Up for auction is this 1965 Porsche 356SC Cabriolet finished in Champagne Yellow over a black leather interior.  Built for the final model year of Porsche’s iconic 356, this SC Cabriolet was delivered new in December of 1964 and remained under the care of its original owner in Sausalito California up until 1982 at 191k miles.  The car was restored by its second owner, refinished in red, and eventually sold to its third owner in 1997. It was acquired by the fourth and current owner in 2004, who commissioned a complete rotisserie restoration from 2008-2010 including a full rebuild of the original engine and gearbox.  Over $100k was invested during this time with less than 3k miles traveled since.  More recently in 2020, this 356SC was brought to Bruce Canepa to undergo extensive reconditioning including service of the engine, carburetors, gearbox, brakes, fuel, and electrical systems.  A lifelong California car accompanied by a complete collection of records and documentation dating back to the original purchase, this fully restored and numbers matching 1965 example is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Sonoma, CA.

Beginning in 2008, this 356SC was placed on a rotisserie and completely restored in its factory specified color of Champagne Yellow (6405).  The entire process was fully documented and there was no expense spared to ensure the highest quality possible.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  During its recent visit at Canepa, light maintenance was performed including headlight adjustments and a thorough detailing of the entire car. This SC features a black convertible top and tonneau cover, a twin-grille rear decklid, a single left-side mirror, and factory date-coded 15” chrome wheels dressed in period-style Michelin XZX tires.

During the restoration, the cabin was completely redone and upholstered with new black leather and grey square weave carpeting.  Coco floor mats have been added and the original three-spoke steering wheel has been retained along with the factory Blaupunkt radio. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

As the car was being restored, the original 1600cc dual-carbureted flat-four engine (#812827) along with the numbers-matching 4-speed gearbox (#81849) were sent to The Stable in San Francisco to be completely overhauled.  Upgraded Dellorto carburetors were installed during this time and the original Solex units are said to accompany the sale as well.  Under 3k miles were driven on the rebuilt engine before the car was brought to Canepa in 2020 for over $9k worth of refurbishment including rebuilt carburetors, ignition and fuel system adjustments, oil and filter changes, a transaxle fluid flush, brake fluid flush, a four-wheel wheel alignment, and more.  A detailed project outline by Canepa is provided in the photo gallery and the seller reports that all service records have been kept dating back to the original purchase in 1964.

This sale will include a comprehensive collection of records, the original bill of sale and customs receipt, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a spare tire, workshop manual, and a clean title.  A well-documented and beautifully restored example of one of the final Porsche 356 models built, this 1965 SC Cabriolet is ready to be cherished and enjoyed by a new caretaker.

@MHL356 During the rotisserie restoration 2008-2010 the complete floor pan and the floor battery box were replaced (see photos of the listing). These cars were susceptible to rust, that's why during the restoration all rust was removed by bead blasting or the panel removed and replaced. All cosmetic work was done by Restoration Works or Bruce Canepa.

Do you have any photos of the car without paint? Are the floors & battery box original or replaced? If no photos of bare body do you know of any prior accident damage?

  • JHMehew (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@Dutchburgess Due to prior commitments I am traveling and won't be able to fulfill your request till Monday. I can guarantee you that the automobile shifts without any problems. I always try to shift from one gear to the next at 3000 rpm as it is important to keep the rpms at mid range. I will get back to you on Monday.

  • Dutchburgess (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Could we see a driving video with someone running the car through all the gears?

  • JHMehew (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@T25 The carburetors were found to be leaking some fuel. Both carburetors were removed and rebuilt by Canepa. There is no leakage from the engine, transaxle, or carburetors. I think the car runs impeccably.

  • T25 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Beauty. Just one question, is the car currently leaking or is that something that was fixed at Canepa? Everything on the project at Canepa was addressed?

@artichoke As stated in the listing I am the 4th owner. I purchased the car in 2004, the body went through a complete rotisserie restoration in 2008-2010. During this period the engine and transmission were restored by the Stable in San Francisco

  • artichoke (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Wow! Do u know how many owners it has had and has there been any accidents or significant body work?

Welcome Bidders, and thank you for your interest in my 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet. Since my high school days in the 60's I always dreamed of owning a 1965 Porsche and fulfilled that dream in 2004 with the above listed Porsche. In 2008 I decided to have the automobile professionally restored to the condition as stated in the original invoice which I have. Everything in the listing is true to the best of my knowledge, all invoices since 1964, all documentation, photographs, dyno testing, etc. It is a beautiful automobile, runs great, and draws a lot of attention when driven. I am not a collector, this is the only Porsche I have ever owned. After 17 years of enjoyment I find it is time to pass on that dream due to my age and health. If you have any questions please ask and I will answer them to the best of my knowledge.

  • Ngreene356 (registered bidder) 2 years, 11 monthsago

    Best color ever.
