We are pleased to present this 1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk 1A Roadster finished in Oxford Blue over a black leather interior. The Sunbeam Tiger was the V8-powered high-performance version of the Sunbeam Alpine, designed in a cooperative effort between Carroll Shelby and the Rootes Group in England. Shelby carefully wedged the V8 into the Alpine body and upgraded the suspension, transmission, and rear end to accommodate the increase in horsepower.  The model gained widespread recognition as the spy car in the 1960s television series Get Smart.  This 1966 example has received an array of updates and refurbishments including full engine-out service in 2019, a brand-new walnut dashboard, reupholstered interior, and new wheels and tires. Affectionally referred to as the “Baby A/C Cobra'', this iconic Sunbeam Tiger is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ontario.

This Tiger is said to have been refinished in the current shade of Oxford Blue during the late 1990s. It features a newer retractable soft top and tonneau cover in black as well as a painted removable hardtop.  Additional images are provided in the photo gallery. This example has been equipped with a set of brand new 15” VTO wheels dressed in new Atrezzo tires.

Inside, you will find a freshly reupholstered black leather interior with new seat covers, door panels, and carpeting. A brand-new walnut dashboard has also been installed which houses a proper LearJet AM/FM radio and a full suite of Smiths instrumentation.

This Tiger is powered by a 260ci Ford V8 engine with upgraded 302 cylinder heads and a stainless steel exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Ford Toploader 4-speed manual transmission. The car comes equipped with Traction Master rear traction bars and retains an original AC cars England air cleaner and fan shroud. A comprehensive engine out service is said to have been performed in 2019 including a new intake manifold, valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket.  The seller adds that the car runs and drives very well and maintains a cool operating temperature on hot days.

This sale will include a shop manual, some service invoices, a removable hardtop, and a clean title. The seller states that this Tiger has been authenticated by a Canadian Rootes Group member, although the seller has not yet been able to acquire a STOA certificate due to local travel restrictions. Fun to drive and beautiful to look at, this Sunbeam Tiger is an ideal choice for any enthusiast in search of a vintage roadster.

@Kpritchard Not at all. On that note as well, I would be happy to assist the new owner with shipping/import to their desired location.

    Happy Bidding!

Do you have the original oil filter equipment? Do you have the tool kit? Can you supply photos of the trunk floor?

  • TheDragasAutoGallery (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Additional photos added by the team here.

As to Certification, I did address it in the write up but it was inspected by the local Canadian Rootes Group guys who verified the car as authentic. I do also understand the significance of having the TAC. Given Covid I couldn't arrange having it done stateside or I would've driven down and had it done myself, would make for a great road trip!

Tiger Authentication Committee (TAC) certified? Really need to know that it was a built Tiger and not a converted Alpine.

@Velotwin Indeed I will. This weekend/Monday I will get it up on a lift and do so. Thank you for you inquiry.

Nice looking Tiger! Will you be providing any images of the undercarriage, floors and door channels as well as the trunk? If possible to show both hard top and soft top in place as well. Cheers

Good day everyone, I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself as the seller and offer assistance to inquiries either here in the comments or the provided link.

The car drives well and shows excellent, can be driven on a short cruise or long haul! Here is an opportunity to own and unmolested example of a true classic, please don't hesitate to reach out and happy bidding!
