The successor to the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL and 190SL roadsters, the W113 generation SL-Class is often referred to as the “Pagoda” for the distinctive shape of its removable hardtop. The 250SL version was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show and was produced for one year only up until January of 1968, making it the rarest of the W113 series cars. This European-spec 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL was sold new in Italy and is said to be 1 of 882 to have come factory equipped with a 5-speed ZF manual transmission. It is said to have undergone a complete restoration in 2016 and has been maintained on display in a private collection ever since. This classic SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Oklahoma.
The W113 platform is derived from a shortened version of the W111 “fintail” sedan’s chassis with technology incorporated from the W112 luxury car. This 250SL was refinished in its original color of Mercedes Blue (DB-335) during its restoration and benefits from a recent application of ceramic coating. It features chrome bumpers, moldings, and door handles, a chrome single bar grille with a central Mercedes-Benz emblem, polished dual exhaust tailpipes, European-spec headlights, round Italian-spec front marker lights, a retractable dark blue soft top, and a removable body-colored hardtop. It rides on 14” slotted steel wheels with chrome body-colored hubcaps and original brand and sized Phoenix whitewall tires.
The restored interior is lined with charcoal German square weave carpeting and features a pair of reclining black leather bucket seats with matching door panels. The black leather dashboard features a body-colored fascia with wood upper trim pieces and matching veneers on the center console. Other accessories include a black two-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring, heating and ventilation controls, chrome inner door handles and window rollers, a 250SL branded radio cover, analog VDO gauges, and a VDO quartz clock. The seller reports all gauges and accessories are working properly.
The 250SL model debuted with a new fuel-injected 2.5-liter inline 6-cylinder engine paired with an improved cooling system which helped produce up to 148 HP and 159 lb.-ft of torque. The 250SL also featured new rear disc brakes and a larger fuel tank. This example features the highly desirable optional 5-speed manual S5-20 ZF transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. The seller indicates a mechanical restoration was carried out in 2016 and a full service was recently completed after the car had been on display for over 6 years with approximately 100 miles driven during that time.
This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a collection of documentation.

@BarryLe The pics should be there now, and o will say this car is a super nice car that is still $9k below what an unrestored 4-speed 280SL sold for on BaT yesterday, and the last ZF 5-speed sold on BaT last year was $225k for an restored survivor car.
This car is still in extreme bargain territory via comps, and it is rare as they come, so it should sell today with my well below market reserve.

@BarryLe So you are talking about the inner fender indentation that matches the indentation on the inside headlight bezel for alignment?
240zGuild: All 230, 250, and 280 SL’s came with headlight notches carved into the body work that the assembly line workers would use to line up the headlight units during assembly of the car. The presence of these notches is a very big deal in concours level judging.
@BarryLe Guess you need to explain the headlight Notch feature you are bringing up, because I am not sure what we are chatting about here.
240zGuild: Fair comment. Why do you think Park Place Ltd. wasn’t more careful of preserving the headlight notches given Shannon Low’s previous comments? My guess is the notches were already lost by the time Park Place Ltd. got the car.
@BarryLe Headlight Notches? The lenses are a fluted pattern, so not sure what you mean there.
@BarryLe Most prefer a nice sound deadener during restorations, so not sure that counts as a negative as it is removable, which just makes it a matter of non modifying preference.
Some restoration details are disappointing and off like the lack of headlight notches and the trunk floor but still a beautiful SL to use as a local show/driver.

@charliek911 Thanks for the kind words, and I must say that Pcar members are amongst the kindest and most respectful of the online venues. Some may come across as nitpicky or critical purely based on the one dimensional text format, but we all have to understand that we all have different needs and ways to gather information for a comfortable purchase, but I do hear you on some non intentional buyers who can sometimes be the most critical with no skin in the game.

Keep in mind that the 250SL is the rarest Pagoda, one optioned with the ZF 5-speed makes it the rarest of the rare. Doesn’t get more Collector Statius than this, and she is ready to fill in the blank in anyone’s collection.

@BarryLe I added more top pics after about an hour in the sun, and you should see that the top is intact installed and lines up correctly, just takes a bit of time to shrink back up after being wrinkled in the collapsed and tucked away position.

And definitely yes to the bolt, I have new yellow cad plated bolts on hand, and was going to replace it, which is a simple fix that slipped my mind before pics.

@BarryLe No fitment issues, it is just the top was freshly pulled up from its storage, so it takes a bit of time for canvas tops to acclimate a bit. It all settles down nicely, and is a common thing when pulling up heavy canvas tops that have been folded down in the cubbies.
240zGuild: In pictures 15 and 71, it looks like there is something off with the fit of the soft top over the window on the driver's side of the car. Can you comment?
@BarryLe Palm Beach Classics out of West Palm Beach, and they have the underhood retro-fit kit, along with a couple Original to Original Appearance under dash unit options to go with the system. Super nice people to deal with.
And yes, I would install the lap belt kit for the winner bidder.

Was the 250 SL radio cover plate installed to cover a hole that was enlarged at one time to fit an aftermarket radio?

I myself bought a 356 from 240zguild one of the nicest cars i have ever bought drove, and i own over 20 collectables, all bugs were presorted out the pics were good and description was spot on and after sale was very easy and prompt from paperwork to exchange of the car. Hello, I was the inventory manager at Park Place LTD and oversaw the restoration department during the time this 250SL was refinished. This SL was owned by a good friend of the owners of the dealership, Steve Boon of WA, a true collector whom sold quite a few of his cars through the dealership at the time. This was a driver level car he and his wife used from 1984-2015 during the summer months in the NW. When we took this car into inventory it was painted red over original and worn grey MB Tex and had US spec headlamps, it was badged as a 280SL and also aftermarket wire wheels fitted. We decided to do some mild refreshing to the car and I wrote to MB Classic in Irvine CA to get a copy of the data card. Once I learned this car was a true Euro spec 250SL and was born a 5- speed and was blue I chatted to the dealership principal and made a case to go forward with a full on restoration and put the car back to its original spec as we wanted to take the car to Monterey Car Week. We stripped the car of all trim, interior, and sent the body for paint. I do not recall the car having any rust issues. The motor and trans were removed and we resealed and serviced both. All parts were bead blasted and refinished to as close to original as possible with parts needing replacement performed as needed. I decided to have a black leather upholstery kit from GAHH installed for a richer cabin, we had the soft top ordered in navy blue german canvas for better cosmetic appeal. All parts were either ordered from MBZ Classic or Buds Benz of Douglasville, GA. New carpets, door cards, full body seal kit, stainless exhaust system, new reproduction polished burlwood kit, and new chrome bumpers were ordered. We sourced a good used set of steel wheels and new hub caps and had them painted then had new proper whitewall tires from Coker fitted. The car came with its original Bosch euro spec headlamps so we installed them. The car had Carello side indicators which would indicate the fact it was an Italian import, I did source a new set to replace the old faded ones through ReOriginals. Many many months and man hours were spent on this car for attention to detail and we were all pleased with the outcome of the total project. When you see the car in person you can see the love and sweat that went into this SL, this was one of my favorite total transformations completed during my 14 years working there. The car is a true work of art and a very rare model that will be a welcome addition to any collection.

I would appreciate yourself ending the lecturing part of your comment, because I am offering Known Details versus speculation, so I am sorry if you translate that to being evasive. I have put up many revealing real world and detailed pics, I have offered the details I feel I can represent honestly, so let’s stop the BS sandbagging by insinuating that I am not telling the full story as known to me.
As I also said, the Park Place LTD project manager who headed the internal Park Place LTD restoration of this car said he would definitely chime in to fill in blanks, so you will need to be patient or just move on.
240zGuild: For someone who says they are so transparent, getting pertinent information from you is like pulling teeth, one at a time. You have published very few Park Place invoices. After completely restoring three cars, I know that there should be a voluminous file of invoices for this car. If you have them, publish them!!! If not, get them from Park Place. Just as a for instance, I can’t tell if the car’s interior was redone in vinyl or leather or even if OEM materials were used. How an any bidder opine on the quality of this restoration with so little information? Why don’t you understand this? The bidding clearly reflects your lack of transparency.

@BarryLe There has to be some miscommunication going on here, because I have stated several times the records on hand is the records, and along with why it is all the records being Park Place LTD restored the car to sell. So that means their labors are not part of the records as they were not billings for a customer to pay. Hope we get that miscommunication out do the way, especially after the former Park Place LTD project manager on the paper chimes in to verify.
The service work done to the car is fluids, and other age/wearable items like rubber brake hoses that were serviced by me, so it isn’t an extensive billable service history being the car was already restored with only needing basic time maintenances.
I can’t get much more clear than that, so I hope that works for you and others, but the car is a very nice car that screams quality.
240zGuild: We are finally making progress. Have you checked with your friend, the previous owner, if he has the restoration records? Since he wrote the checks, he must know how much money was spent in the restoration of his car. Where is the most recent service record to get the car road ready/worthy?
@BarryLe The car was part of collection of a local collector/friend of mine who we will deal back and forth with our hobby cars from time to time, and it is he who bought it back in 2016 after Park Place LTD was done with it.
As we all know, a car that has been on display for years needs services to bring it back to driver duty, which is what I have done over the last several months, along with taking it to a couple shows and dinner drives.
Good News though, I was able to verify that Park Place LTD performed the restoration of the car, and the main project manager will chime in with the history of the car shortly, so I do hope that helps.
As to your question of why I didn’t insist on restoration records? It has restoration records, which clearly shows Park Place LTD did the work by default of the parts and sublet docs, which clearly showed who did the restoration as an internal labor build for resale.
240zGuild: Can you please clarify the description on this car? It is a bit confusing. You stated the car was completely restored in 2016. Then it remained in a private collection undriven for the next six years. Was it stored in your personal collection or someone else’s personal collection? If it was someone else’s, why wouldn’t you have insisted on the restoration records when you bought the car? Are you a private seller or a dealer? And finally, where is the recent service record where you made the car road ready for the next owner?
@BarryLe I hear you on what you are saying, but do understand I don’t like to make claims I don’t have verification on, and event though all details show Park Place to be the restorers as others who looked at the receipts would assume, I would rather not boldly make a claim I don’t have an Exhibit A final receipt for.
I hope that makes sense, but it appears this is a Park Place LTD restored car for resale, which I would assume why there are not Labor or Final Billing Receipts versus the parts and sublet cost only receipts and pics for record.
@BarryLe But to answer your question in what the information shows, Park Place LTD did the restoration/assembly with sublets like German Car Services out of Lacey WA who performed the Engine/Trans work, with Bud’s Benz Inc supplying the bulk of restoration items, Signature Auto Glass for glass installation, Sunmark Upholstery out of Bellevue WA for some of the upholstery needs, with other upholstery needs being done by Kenny’s Auto Upholstery out of Renton WA.
With all that being said, and after my discussion with Park Place LTD, I am confident the restoration/sale was done by Park Place LTD due to receipts going to, with all the work being local to them in WA, so I would just like to have an verification from who appeared to be the project manager at Park Place LTD
240zGuild: I apologize if you feel that I called you out but time is of the essence here with only three days left in the auction. I am familiar with Park Place in Bellevue. They have a stellar reputation which is reason enough for you to work hard to produce the restoration receipts for your car. Frankly, you should have anticipated these questions before your auction went live. Your total transparency now and the production of the restoration records can only help you get maximum value for your car.
@BarryLe First off, I am not being evasive at all, just gathering correct details from what I have here, so keep in mind that this is Monday Morning and I am reaching out to the parties who would be able to offer the Vitals that I am sure you and others want.
The receipts do not tell the whole story that I am sure you would appreciate more, and after a call to Park Place LTD out of Bellevue WA, I found out that they do restore special cars, but that is not a program that runs through their service department. The restoration services is a Sales Department thing, where I am trying to track down the gentleman as C/O on the Park Place receipts due to obviously being the one who manage the project.
As of now, I know work was done at Park Place LTD in Bellevue WA as that is where the restoration parts orders went to, but the gentleman who worked there with his name on the receipts is no longer there, so I don’t want to say Park Place LTD out of Bellevue WA did all the work.
More details are to come, and I was working on gathering as many details as I could before answering, but it appears impatience or questioning my evasiveness made it necessary to answer now. I am very forthcoming in my listings, and go out of my way to make sure any and all details are answered to the best of my ability, but please do understand this is Monday morning and I am working with Pacific Standard Time resources.

I once asked Denise McLuggage why she no longer had the Ferrari 250 SWB I used to see her racing in. She told me that she had to sell it because she loved it too much.
I sold my 31.000 mile 993C4S on this site for the same reason. It was drop dead gorgeous and I was almost afraid to drive it. I replaced it with an inexpensive 996.1 C4 and a 986.2., both from this site. They were both bought cheaply and then thoroughly refreshed.
They are both bulletproof and I am enjoying driving them like I stole them!

@vnaar123 I am not at my office to look over the notes and refresh my memory, but I will soon enough. Keep in mind that I didn’t have the car built, so Build Totals were not engrained into my head from having the misfortune of writing the many many checks for the build, I bought the car based on it’s obvious value and quality.
I will definitely gather details and post when I get back to the office, but I can promise you this is not a cheap or poor quality build, as you should be able to clearly see.
Still waiting on answers to restoration questions. The more the seller can make prospective buyers feel confortabile the higher we can bid.
@WRENCH.56 Thanks for that spot on assessment, which the rarity and fresh appearance is the reason I have decided to sell instead of hold in my collection, because this car is way to nice to regular drive in rural Oklahoma on a regular basis as I do all of my cars.
vnaar123: Collector car values primarily hinge on two things besides condition and originality. They are provenance (particularly with race cars and cars formerly belonging to famous people) and production numbers.
This is an exceptionally nice example of a car with much lower production numbers than for 280 Pagoda cars AND it has the rare original 5 speed ZF gearbox.
If I had garage space I would put this car into my collection way sooner than any 280 SL with the run of the mill automatic transmission!

@JJensen Yes, there is an AC kit for the car that is sold new at several of the vintage Mercedes parts sources, and I was going to install it, but I didn’t have the heart to cut hosing holes through the firewall.

Your 250 is fully restored and beautiful. yes I'm looking at that 280. that example is 30mnts from my house and I will view in person. It does appear it needs some work. If yours was a 280 it would be a no brainer. 250 values just dont hold up the same. Im a bit on the fence to be honest. As I'm sure you know it all comes down to price.
