We are pleased to present this 1968 Porsche 911 Karmann Coupe finished in Polo Red over a highly original black leatherette interior. Originally delivered through Continental Motors inc. of Hinsdale Illinois, this 1968 example remained under the care of its original owner up until 2016 at 63k miles when it was purchased by its second and current owner. It has since undergone a complete split-case engine rebuild at the hands of a reputable air-cooled specialist with approximately 2k miles driven since. Currently showing just over 65k original miles on the odometer, this well-sorted and thoroughly documented short wheelbase 911 is now being offered for auction by its seller in Washington accompanied by extensive records, the original owner’s manual and stamped delivery book, the original wheels, a complete original toolkit, date-stamped spare tire, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
This 911 is presented in its original color of Polo Red and the paint is said to be in very good condition throughout with some mild patina and signs of road-going wear. The car is suspected to have been refinished at some point during its life and the Karmann bodywork is said to be in excellent shape, free of any signs of rust or repair. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery. Period aftermarket Lucas headlights are installed and this 911 rides on genuine 15”x 6.5” Fuchs wheels dressed in brand-new Michelin tires. The original set of date-coded ventilated steel chrome wheels will also accompany the sale.
Inside, the black leatherette interior is said to have been kept in fantastic highly original condition. New front trunk carpeting has been installed and the seat cushions have been restuffed, however, all other original pieces are said to have been retained including the headliner, dashboard, door pockets, wood-rimmed steering wheel, headrests, and Blaupunkt radio. The seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional at this time.
This early 911 is equipped with its original 2.0 L carbureted flat-six engine paired with a number’s matching 5-speed 901 gearbox. In November of 2016 at 64,281 miles, a complete split-case engine rebuild is said to have been carried out at European Auto House during which time the engine bay was fully detailed and repainted before the engine was reinstalled with new SSI heat exchangers and an MSD ignition system. A new fuel tank was installed at 64,900 miles and the carburetors are said to have been tuned in 2020 by renowned Porsche expert Jack Morris. There have been 5 oil changes recorded since the engine rebuild and this 911 is said to be accompanied by a large box of records dating back to the original purchase. The seller reports this example to be startup promptly, shift smoothly, and run strong while free of any outstanding maintenance items.
This sale will include 1 key set, the original owner’s manual and stamped delivery book, a complete original toolkit, the original spare tire, jack, and wheels, a box of records, a Porsche COA, an assortment of original engine parts, the original’s owners personalized keychain, and a clean title. @Tom_F2 Tom, I am currently traveling and do not have access to all of my photos. The 4 original chrome steel wheels are in excellent nick and are date stamped 68 (as is the spare that appears in the photographs) . The tool roll is original and complete, red handled screw drivers, tools look "as new" . Again, sorry I don't have the photos with me....

This brings back memories of my first 911 which was a polo red L that I purchased in 1971. I see this one has had the dreaded exhaust air pump removed. It was the first thing I did after buying mine. Turns out Porsche used the same pump that GM used on my brother’s 1968 Corvair. It had the GM part number stamped on it. After removing the pump the car ran great. I do remember a bit of a problem when I attended the 1974 Parade. The car was stumbling a bit. One of the local dealers had a mechanic on duty that sorted the carbs and the car ran better than ever for the balance of my ownership. My head got turned by a 1973 911S Targa and I sold it to a guy who called me every year for 5 years to thank me for selling the car to him.

@leecarrera .... true about the FUCHS, they are indeed newer (1972) if I am not mistaken but, please remember the car comes with it original steel chrome wheels as well :)
Very nice '68. I restored a low mileage '68 S a few years ago and am very familiar with this vintage 911. One mistake in the write up concerns the Fuchs wheels which if these are the originals would be 15x5.5 inches not 6.5". This was the only year that the 5.5" Fuchs wheel was fitted to the 911. In '69 the 15x6 inch wheel replaced the 5.5". To my knowledge 15" Fuchs were never made in a 6.5" width.

@mdkillen I can absolutely assure you of a numbers matching car.... yes. Video?... I'm in my 60's and must admit, technology escapes me... I'm surprised I can turn THIS damn thing on :)
May also explain my love for anything Porsche...prior to anything 99 that is :)

A little side note: The car ran well after the overhaul and then was given to Jack Morris to fine tune. The car starts instantly, even here in cold weather, takes to an immediate smooth idle and runs out perfectly cold or warm. No smoke, cold or warm, no hesitation, no "popping" or "farting" ... the car simply drives great and never argues...light, medium or full throttle application be damned...... we just can't say that about most carbureted 911's :) Jack is a wizard!

@mdkillen Thank you... it really is a fantastic car and as I stated earlier, THE most honest early 911 I have seen in a VERY, VERY long time.
@utopify .... Please allow me to address these questions 1) The car has had paintwork, but, some time ago. We are not looking at original paint, so "meter readings" really don't apply. In addition the paint on the car is older, it is not a newer 2 stage paint. What I can tell you ABSOLUTELY, is that the car has never been damaged. 2) I don't have a hoist so "good" chassis shots are difficult at best, I will however, refer you to the photos of the Jacking points, a notorious place for rust on early 911's. The car us rust free, absolutely. 3) The car is a "matching number" example. Original Delivery books and the COA confirm same. Again, the car is a two owner car and extremely well documented. I hope that helps... sir.

Beautiful car! In line with this caliber of 911, it may be helpful to give the usual paint meter/history, underbelly/up on a lift, engine and trans numbers and perhaps a cold start/driving video. It might help some bidders off the fence. A really neat example here, good luck with the auction!

This last year SWB is without question THE most honest early 911 I have seen in many, many years and I started working for Porsche in 1978! . This superb 911 starts, runs and drives perfectly....
