Now available is this 1968 Porsche 912 Karmann Coupe finished in Polo Red over a black leatherette interior.  Offered under consignment, this short-wheelbase 1968 example was acquired by the current owner in 1978 and had participated in road rally racing early on in its life. It carries a rebuilt 1600cc flat-four engine derived from the Porsche 356SC, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.  Recently serviced in 2021 with new spark plugs, manifold gaskets, and a valve adjustment, this 912 has been well cared for by its longtime owner and is now being offered by its seller out Indiana accompanied by a collection of historical documentation, records, manuals, and the original steel wheels.

The Karmann bodywork was factory finished in Polo Red and is said to have been refinished during the early 1990s.  New rocker panels were also installed later in 2003 along with refinishing of the quarter panels and rear tail section.  Some dents are noted on the driver-side rear quarter panel as well as spider-web cracks in the finish on the passenger rear quarter, additional images are provided in the photo gallery.  Upgraded 15” Fuchs-style alloy wheels have been installed and are currently mounted with Michelin XZX tires.  The tires are said to have been mounted in 2017 and the original set of steel wheels and polished hubcaps are said to accompany the sale as well.

Inside, you will find a classic interior appointed with black leatherette upholstery, a light grey headliner, and brushed aluminum trim on the dashboard.  The driver is also supplied with front window vents and pop-out rear quarter windows for ventilation. A perforated leather cover has been laced over the steering wheel and a Porsche-logo radio block off plate has been mounted in the center dashboard.  Some signs of wear and patina are present, and the seller reports the driver-side door pocket has begun to sag.  The 5-digit odometer currently reads just over 12k miles and the total mileage remains unknown.

This 912 is equipped with an air-cooled 1600cc flat-four engine with case stamping #1283955.  Power is fed to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox.  The engine is said to have been rebuilt in 2000 by Autohaus Merkle of Indianapolis.  Recent service carried out earlier in 2021 is said to include an oil change, carburetor tuning, new manifold gaskets, and new spark plugs as well as adjustments and cleaning of the valves.  Images of the undercarriage are provided in the photo gallery along with some service records.

This sale will include a collection of records and historical documentation, the original owner's handbook, the original steel wheels and hubcaps, and a clean title. Cherished by the same caretaker for over 40 years, this 912 is ready to begin its journey with a new owner.

@watermonger It was a cold start. Took a few minuets for the gauge to move.

    Seller,
Can you provide some more background on the rear body work - rear quarter panels and rear tail panel? Was this due to rust or an accident ?
    Thanks. Eric.

@watermonger the engine number is correct for a 912 produced in 1968. From our knowledge and history of documents, the engine has never been replaced and we have reason to believe it is original. A Porsche Kardex report has never been run on this car.

HI, Is this a matching numbers car? Thanks. Dan

  • LordVenn (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Well improved, looked after and enjoyed
    Had a chance in early 90s for a 912
Went for a 74 Carrera instead
Repairs in Marin Co cost more than the ask for the 912
Not that getting older means driving slower
This offering is the essence of motoring
