The Porsche 912 was offered alongside the original 911 as an entry-level sports car featuring a lightweight and easily maintained pushrod engine derived from the 356SC. Finished in Tangerine over a black interior, this 1968 Porsche 912 Sunroof Coupe is said to be a lifelong California car that benefits from a comprehensive restoration completed over the course of nearly 5 years. It features new Koni Sport Shocks as well as a fully rebuilt and upgraded numbers-matching engine. Painstakingly sorted by reputable specialists, this 912 recently received its initial break-in service since the restoration and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This 912 was subject to a complete glass-out refinish in its correct single-stage Tangerine paint color. All new rubber seals were installed, the sealed beam turn signals were properly rebuilt with new lenses, and a new windshield has been fitted along with new deco moldings, bumper guards, lights, an engine grille, badges, and a period-correct hood crest. The wheels were also refinished by a specialist and dressed in a set of new Nexen tires, and a matching spare is included in the trunk with a period-correct tire and hubcap. The seller adds that the original brightwork remains in very good condition for its age. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been comprehensively refurbished with new carpeting, upholstery, door panels, headliner, and sun visors. The original 1968-specific dashboard has been restored correctly with material by Tony Garcia of Autobahn Interiors. The gauges have been rebuilt and a new reproduction wood-rimmed steering wheel was installed and paired with a restored horn button pad. The car features a proper 1968 Blaupunkt radio connected to a reproduction OEM speaker and an antenna. The optional sunroof has also been rebuilt with a new motor and cables and is said to remain fully functional along with the windows and all other accessories.

The seller states that the original flat-four engine has been completely rebuilt including machining the crankshaft and connecting rods, balancing the rotating assembly, and installing oversized pistons for a displacement of 1,750cc. The cylinder heads were rebuilt and valve grind work was done by Tuttles Parts Exchange in Southern California. The correct split-shaft Solex P-11-40 carburetors have also been rebuilt and feature the correct air cleaners and all appropriate hoses. Other engine items include refurbished sheet metal, a rebuilt OEM fuel pump, a new OEM fuel tank and sending unit, new fuel lines, a new distributor, a new Bosch starter, refinished heater boxes, and a new Dansk sport muffler. The numbers matching 4-speed manual transmission has been serviced, resealed, and paired with a new OEM flywheel and a Sachs clutch. The suspension is rebuilt with new Koni Sport Shocks as well as upgraded tie rods. The braking system has also been serviced with rebuilt calipers, new brake lines, pads, rotors, and a new dual-phase master cylinder. The seller notes the initial break-in service was completed in May 2023 and included a valve adjustment, oil change, carburetor tuning, and more.

This sale will include a clean title.

@VertexAuto I agree 100% with you on the rarity of these. I own a sunroof delete rear wiper SC and you never see them. My last 68 sunroof 912 I owned was almost 10 years ago. It was Bahama yellow.

I'll see if I can get a pic of the stampings on 1 of the Fuchs before the auction ends for you.

@bigvitty4u Yes, deleting the reflectors is a common and just a preference. Can you post pics of the Fuchs stampings? I swap steelies and Fuchs on mine all the time. Can't ever decide what look I like best.

These sunroof 912 are getting harder and harder to find. I think more rare than a sunroof delete SC or Carrera. New owner should be thrilled!

@VertexAuto when I got the car the side markers were deleted and I personally prefer them with out. But like you said easy for someone to add if they like. The Fuchs were on the car when I bought it and I like the look. I've owned tons of the swb cars and felt it was a nice change from steelies. I replaced the grill with a new one and same with the lenses.

    Bumpers fit well.

Thank you for your nice comments 👍

Wow! Those side markers are now about $500 new for a set of 4. Also, missing the rear bumper trims. See pic #94, and the original style battery trays and straps. Pic 69 & 70. All things that can be corrected easily by the new owner. Beautiful car! Great job with the restoration. Glad you kept some of the original parts with original patina. These cars were built by hand and restoring them takes a lot of man hours.

Are the Fuchs original? How about the Ft & Re turn signal assemblies and rear grill? Can you post pics of the manufacture markings? The rear grill should have small numbers running down the passenger side when looking out towards the rear.

Lastly, Is the front bumper is not aligning correctly? See pics 81-84. Thanks and GLWA!

When the car was being restored, why were the side markers not put back on the car. All 1968 912s had them.

  • bigvitty4u (seller) 10 months, 3 weeksago

Hello everyone. Welcome to the auction. I'm here to help with any questions. Thanks!!

  • bigvitty4u (seller) 10 months, 3 weeksago

@Bruce914 no rust that I know of. Very straight and solid car. Please note the car underwent a 5 year restoration that was finished a year ago so some components that are new have some patina as it were.

    Sorry no before photos.

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 10 months, 3 weeksago

How much rust (if any) is under all that undercoating? Just curious looking at all the rust on the suspension and various bolts, ie... the new master cylinder bolts don't look like they have been off in awhile. Overall a beautiful car - just wondering what's lurking in the shadows. Any before pics or floor pics?
