Now available for auction is this 1969 Porsche 911E finished in Polo Red over a black interior.  Reported to have been purchased by the seller from their brother-in-law and original owner, this 1969 example has been treated to an extensive amount of restoration including a full refresh of the suspension and braking systems as well as a rebuilt engine and transmission by Storz Garage in Colorado during 2020.  This 911E is accompanied by a small library of technical books, a commemorative coin collection, Porsche branded clothing, original documentation, spare parts, a Kardex, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and service records dating back to 1974.  As previously listed on PCARMARKET and with a fresh valve adjustment and new Bilstein front struts, this thoroughly sorted long-hood 911 is now being offered by its longtime second owner Denver, Colorado with less than 1k miles driven on the rebuilt engine.

The Polo Red paint is said to be in good condition with only a few minor blemishes, and the car is said to have been partially refinished during the course of its life (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). Refurbishment carried out under the current ownership includes professional repair of the passenger side floor pan, re-plating of the brake calipers, and the re-anodizing and painting of the Fuchs wheels to OEM specs by specialist Greg Dunn.  Brand new Michelin tires were recently installed, and a replica Leitz roof rack will also be included in the sale along with leather straps.

The black interior has been kept in great shape with the rebuilt driver’s seat by Auto Weave, restoration of the front trunk by the owner, new leather luggage straps, and new OEM carpets and Coco floormats.  A correct-type Blaupunkt New Yorker radio has been installed along with an aftermarket wood-rimmed MOMO steering wheel, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional. The 5-digit odometer currently shows approximately 27k miles, although the total mileage on the vehicle has been estimated at approximately 385k through historical records. An additional leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel will also accompany the sale along with the original OEM wheel.

This 911 is said to carry its original 2.0 L flat-six engine which is paired with a number’s matching 5-speed manual gearbox.  The engine and transmission are said to have been completely rebuilt in 2020 by Storz Garage less than 1k miles ago, and recent maintenance items are said to include a fresh Kendall oil change, valve adjustment, and new Bilstein front struts.  The following items are also said to have been addressed under the current ownership with all parts sourced from reputable suppliers:

  • Front and Rear Suspension Rebuilt by Owner, Certified and Aligned by Storz
  • All Hardware Re-Plated by Tru6 to OEM Specs
  • Engine Tin Powder Coated by Colorado Powder Coating
  • SSI Heat Exchangers and Muffler Cerakote by Pristine Coating
  • Engine Bay Refurbished by Owner
  • Carrera Chain Tensioner Upgrade
  • Turbo Lower Valve Covers
  • Cooling Fan Restored by Mark Motshagen to OEM specs
  • Tarrett Engineering Front Sway Bar
  • New Fuel Lines and Fittings
  • New Brake Lines and Fittings
  • Re-Plated Calipers and Brake Hardware by Tru-6
  • New Transmission Mount Bushings
  • New Torsion Bar Bushings Front and Rear
  • New Front and Rear Axle Bearings
  • New Bilstein Shocks Rear
  • New Gas Boge/Sachs Inserts Front
  • New Rennline Design RS End Links

This sale will include 1 key and 1 antenna key, 6-pieces of Porsche branded clothing with a Kodiak buffalo leather duffle bag, a 12-piece silver Porsche calendar commemorative coin set (1962-1973), a 10-piece Porsche library, volumes I and II of the Porsche Shop Manual, a Porsche Museum coffee table book, several technical books, original purchase documents, service records dating back to 1974, a few boxes of assorted original parts, a Kardex, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

@jkestrel for that kind of money it would seem fitting to fail the auction and just fix it raise the reserve accordingly. I know right where to take it to a Porsche specialty shop. He's also a collector.

@Yopurp @Yopurp, Back in my VW days I'd seen this a few times. They insert heavy weights in the jack ports, then raise the car. After straightening the edges of the floor pan, they weld in quarter-round lengths of metal. Collars are cut and welded around the jack ports. Think it was around $500 back then, probably @ $2000 - $2500 today, I would guess.

The 350k miles look to have taken a toll on those jack points and frame rails. Does anyone have an idea of the core bodywork needed to remediate that? Seems pretty core to the frame so wondering even how that can be done. Pans, front rear clips and fenders are much more straightforward. Trying to figure out how to budget the things I’d want to do before jumping in here. Have made a few calls but looking to see if anyone watching has ideas as well.

Well shoot, biggest snow storm of the season. No lunch with Dora in the Porsche. She'll have to settle for the '64 Ranchero to learn a stick, which happens to be a Hurst Competition Pro shifter on a David Kee toploader in a Monte Carlo Rallye Falcon suspension clone. It's a toss up, who's more fun to drive. The Porsche shifter is dainty, the Hurst is a brick****house. They corner about the same, the Porsche is way faster (both sixes). I sure hope someone buys this car too drive the piss out of it, although it's the sexiest thing I've ever had in a garage, just to sit and stare at it. Gene always told me, "Never let the RPM's get below 3,000." He had it on the old Nurburgring track banked curve in 1974 in fifth at 6,000 rpm and the needle was at 12:00; was one of his favorite stories.

@Maui928 Mr. Optimist. Thanks. We'll know by Friday for sure one way or the other, eh?Regardless, I'm taking Dora on a lunch date in it.

  • Maui928 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@kghjr honesty will pay off in the end. It’s the best way to go and the new owner will appreciate the knowledge you have bestowed and the effort that you have put into this car. All the best!

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Of the last three pics of the body; #1 is before, 2 and 3 are after. It's as perfect as one could hope for in a 50 year old car. Again, all go, no show.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@Maui928 Good eye on the seal and flap. I looked at original pics, there are two pieces that were never there. Had I been aware they would have been replaced yeqars ago. Pelican has them. Genuine Porsche parts, both, ordered. Be here Friday. If I were keeping the car the seals would be replaced, the lens would not. If I did replace lens right now it would be ÜRO and the new owner will want genuine Porsche. I can see pcar lost confidence, lowered recommended reserve, after I lowered it days ago. If I kill the auction by being honest, it goes straight to brick and mortar consigner and the first person who drives it will lbuy it. A trailer queen, she ain't, she's a daily driver grocery getter errand runner with high style. I'm handicapped, get to park up front in super wide spaces. No door comes near this car.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@7Diamonds That's the rear. Yes, it appears there has been some body work, that entire panel does not look original. There is a pic of the engine hood shows some repair work.

  • Maui928 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@7Diamonds Those pics are of the centre rear bumper section. It looks to be following the proper body lines to me when comparing to other like examples. I think it’s just the angle; pic 61 is a better view showing the correct lines. However, I did notice that the turn signal lens is cracked on the driver rear; and the engine hood seal that runs across the outside portion of the centre rear bumper has been painted over and is missing the whole front flap section. Just small items for the new owner to address to help bring the car up to the next level. Love this car and wish I was in position to bid. Good luck all!

  • 7Diamonds (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Hi I'm am looking at pictures 31 and 32 , on your post.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@7Diamonds Are you looking at the photos with the fields in the background? The hood is not closed. It makes the bumper look droopy.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

All the little lights work: the two under the hood, the glove box; the B-pilar cabin lights turn on and off but do not turn on when the door opens. All main exyeriior lights work. Fog lights have a dedicated circuit with a relay, lighted dash switch.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@7Diamonds The left rear rubber strip has a gash. I don't see what you are talking about up front. I had a dent removed from the valance below the front bumper.

  • 7Diamonds (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

looking at the front bumper looks like its been hit, kindly advise

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Wow! Dora is going to go nuts when she sees this beauty again. There is not a surface swirl or scratch anywhere. The entire car has a mirror finish. There are minor blemishes. pics are in first round. New pics coming of the post buff-out and headliner cleaning. I gotta quit driving it. even my daughter noticed the difference from pre-rebuild. One more time, lunch with Dora. She won't view the auction, says it's like a funeral.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Son-of-a-biscuit! I’m just driving it over to get the headliner steam cleaned and the swirls removed from the paint and on the way over got a lunch date with Dora, who has never been in a Porsche. I should double the reserve. I could date women way below my age group with this thing.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

The ignition has been changed to Pertronix electroniic pointless. Of course, original parts in a bag in the big box.

The window tinting was done by Tint My Ride, is the lightest available and can be peeled off. At 5,000 feet in Denver, the sun will eat an old interior fast.

I am happy to be to the first in the water here. This is a beautiful car with a very interesting history. Im sure I wont be near where this closes at, I'll certainly wish I was. Good luck sir.

@kghjr - It was late last night when I posted my comment, but I could have sworn the "clock" on this auction indicated less than a day to go before it ended. Now, I see it says over four days remain. Good news for you and your car! With that amount of time to go, I'm sure enough serious bidders will take notice, and you will be seeing some healthy numbers in the end. The market for all air-cooled 911's is on fire these days, and especially for the first-gen cars like yours. Good luck!

  • Schwelk (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Don’t fret....you have a beauty here. I am sure that things will pick up as the clock ticks down.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@wadds1971 Thanks for the comments. You're dead on, I guess. Beats me too. I wonder why the mileage is that big of an issue. The only things on the car with 385,000 miles is the body and electrical. The engine, transmission, F & R suspension, every single bushing and bearing, wheels and tires, brakes, and fuel system, including the rebuilt MFI unit, and 90% of the hardware, have 3,000 miles. Every single thing except the radio speaker works. Perhaps I unsold it, chased everyone off. Perhaps this car needs to be sold in person and not sight unseen. It sure is getting a lot of views and saves for no comments nor bids.

  • wadds1971 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Not sure why this car hasn't received the attention from commenters and bidders that it likely deserves, but maybe the total mileage, and the continuing needs, are giving people some concerns. I owned a '70 911T , and then a '76 911S, many years ago, but can hardly claim to be any kind of an expert with these, so I would defer to others for any predictions on what its future might require in the way of major additional services. But, this looks to be a great starting point for a knowledgeable fan who has sufficient resources, as well as a solid team of techs nearby to help out from time to time. Great looking 911, and I love the back story as well. The Navy history speaks to me, but sadly this car is just going to be too big of a stretch. I hope it finds a new home with an appreciative new owner. Good luck!

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

When I was breaking in the engine, I broke one of the struts, which were original hydropneumatic struts that had been modified to defeat the hydropneumatics to be able to accept inserts. Rather than fixing them, I replaced them with slightly used Bilsteins when it was in for the valve adjust.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Someone asked what it still needs. The radio, the dash, the right side rocker panel all need attention someday or not, they have no bearing on curb-side appearance, drivability or reliability, and the headliner is original, clean and not torn but old. The under sides of the wheel wells could use a good cleaning, if you notice the backgrounds of the suspension pics. I'll get back up pics published Monday. it was built to be driven not shown. Frankly, if it does not make reserve, which has been lowered significantly already, I'll be just as happy, maybe happier in the long run, but I'm under contract and committed to see it through. Whatever minor things remain to be addressed, this is one damn fine ride. Hey admin, do you still have the video of it getting on the freeway? I just emailed several new pics too, please.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

The New Yorker radio in the car turns on and seems to work, but the temporary speaker is lame. The dash center seaker is from 1969, not working. An extra Blaupunkt Frankfort radio, speaker and speaker pigtail comes with the car. It has the original retractable keyed antennae with three keys.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

I'll just make relevent comments rather that constantly change the text about things that come to mind. I replaced all the lug nuts to black ones (old used-to-be-black ones in a bag) matching the new hand painted center caps and also have a magnesium socket for the magnesium lug nots, including a locking lug on each wheel and the hex wrenches for the old center caps (in a bag) which use set screws. The new ones use spring clips. BTW, air wrenches should never be used on these lug nuts, hand wrenches only. I tip the tire guy a $20 when I hand him the key and socket. The replacement parts came from Pelican, primarily, a bunch from AASE Sales, Elephant Racing front anti-swaybar Rebel Racing strut brace. Not a single eBay or Craigslist part.

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@Matril01 Are you referring to the surface rust on the bottom of the floorpans, which has looked like that for about 25 years? When I was restoring it, thinking I would keep it, that rust was the last thng on the list. It would not change in my lifetime, why mess with it? Keep in mind that this car was a daily driver only car from 1969 to 2015, with 385,000 miles. I wanted to make it to 500,000 but sadly...

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@Matril01 The rear torsion bars were set by Storz, supposedly using factory settings. IO agree, it looks high. Being a daily driver, not a show car, the rust is watched closely but has not been touched. No body work has been done by me except the front valance and some door dings removed. The previous owner did some body work but no paperwork. The hood has been replaced. The paint on the rest of the car looks to be original. All the brightwork is original.

  • Matril01 3 years, 1 monthago

The car looks very nice. I have a couple of questions for the seller. Looking at the exterior photos, it seems that the rear suspension has the car lifted in the back a bit. What is going on here? And some of the photos show rust, what is the current status of the rust? Thx!

  • kghjr (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

Thanks for looking. There is also a chronological public build sheet Facebook profile under Polo Red Porsche which explains some of the history of the car and previous owner, a retired Rear Admiral USNA '41 who bought the car new, factory direct to his ship's address, and was his third Porsche.

In 1956 he was the Naval Attache to the Court of King Juan Carlos. Gene graduated high school from a one room schoolhouse in West Texas fluent iin Castilliian Spanish and was accepted into the US Naval Academy. He was in the class that graduated early to go to war and he spent the next four years in the South Paciific, on board various war ships. He was in every major sea balttle of the Pacific theater.

He was sitting in hiis office in Madrid one day and a buddy, one of the King's aides, came running in, allexicted, to grab Gene and drag him downstairs to see what he had, a Porsche Spyder. Well, Gene had to have one of those like right now. The buddy called Ferry and said that his buddy, Gene, wanted a Spyder too. Well, come on up and get one, stay at the house while you're here.

According to Gene, he was a family friend from then on. He claied to have stayed at Ferry's in 1974 when the PCA had it's annual event at the Nurburgring. Ferry insisted that Gene let him take it through the factory for some spiff ups. The receipt is in hand but it does not document the story that this was when they added operational vent wings.

in 1956 Gene and his friend drove to Stuttgart, stayed with the Porsche family, and raced back to Madrid with two Spyders. Of course he kicked himself for selling it in '63 to get a 356, which he sold to his nephew in '69 to get this E, which he sold to me in 2015 after my sisrter took away his keys, at 99 years old. ( he made it until 101) I spent four years restoring the mechanical systems bumper-to-bumper, and replacing a plethora of missing cosmetic pieces, like rubber and plastic plugs, making it mine with the intention of keeping it and driving it. All new adn NOS parts are from authorized Porsche parts distributors and all used parts that were replaced are kept.

I am selling becasue, as it turns out, I am quite dangerous to myself, passengers, and any other driver in my vicinity becasue of an arthritis I have that causes me to have zero head movement in any direction; it's frozen lookiing down and not on top. I scare small children and cause double-takes by gawkers. I am physically unable to hold in a clutch and look either way at stop signs. With an automatic, I can hold the brake peddle with either foot and turn my entire body to look both ways, no problem, no danger. I have taken a leap-of-faith right turn and then after the turn, look in the mirror to see if I am about to get smashed, which has been the case more than once, one miss by inches, a Suburban. Too scary for me. It's just a mtter of time until I cause a wreck in it. My main car is an SUV, automatic, sitting up high, very safe.
