The Volkswagen Type 2 was introduced in 1950 as a follow-up to the Beetle, utilizing the same rear-engine, air-cooled design principles. It was initially designed as a versatile commercial vehicle but gained popularity as a camper van and recreational vehicle. The Westfalia version offered a pop-up roof, fold-out bed, kitchenette, and various amenities, turning the Type 2 into a mobile home. Finished in white over a reupholstered interior, this 1969 example was reportedly acquired from a seller in San Diego in 2014 and has been cared for by the same family and garage-stored ever since. This classic Westfalia is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

This VW comes finished in a shade of off-white contrasted with a white roof and bumpers. Exterior equipment includes a front-hinged pop-top camper, chrome trim, and steel wheels VW-stamped hubcaps dressed in whitewall tires from 2020 in like-new condition. The seller adds that some rubber seals were replaced and a new pop-up roof & cot were installed in 2014, followed by the installation of new switches for brake lights in December 2023. Some small areas of surface rust and paint chipping are noted along with surface rust on the wheels. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin was restored in 2014 including new wood paneling, leather upholstery, carpets, and rubber floor mats. Amenities include a fold-up table, power outlets, an under-seat storage compartment, a fold-out bed, and a kitchenette. The seller adds that the original sink unit will accompany the sale along with a new stereo system and a VW rear camper tent extension.

Powered by an air-cooled 1.5-liter flat-four mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, the Type 2 features electronic ignition, an oil bath air cleaner, an alternator, and a mechanical fuel pump to feed a single center-mounted carburetor. The seller notes that new front brakes were installed shortly after their purchase and service throughout 2023 has included an oil & filter change in August, the carburetor cleaned in October, and the master cylinder cleaned & brake fluid changed in December.

This sale will include a clean title, the original sink unit, a new stereo system, and a rear camper tent extension.

The seller would like you to know:My husband had about 9 total VW buses during his lifetime and a 1971 camper van for about 25 years. He enjoyed working on his VW buses and taking them on road trips. In 2013, he sold his 1971 bus, and he bought the current 1969 camper van on Samba.com from a seller in San Diego. Sadly, my husband passed away in late 2014, shortly after doing a major restoration of the bus interior, which was a labor of love for him. I have kept this 1969 bus since 2014 out of nostalgia, but my daughters and I are now ready to pass it on to a new owner who can thoroughly enjoy it. All maintenance is up to date, including new vehicle inspection and registration and brand-new tires. It has been garaged in NY state since 2014 to protect it from the elements.”

Will the bus need to be picked up in NY or MA and are you able/willing to keep it till the end of the month?

  • nobrakes (registered bidder) 2 months, 2 weeksago

I have worked on lots of cars but one of the hardest most miserable things I ever did was install a new tent into a '68 Westfalia. A few dozen at least tiny little Phillips head screws all the way around and deep into the decreasing wedge. This one is nice and tidy. GLWTS

@urfealex Yes, we drove it last weekend locally for the photo shoot shown here, and we also drove it to the auto shop in December for the registration renewal for the bus. I have a video of the engine running, and I can get a video of a cold start and it going through the gears if that will be helpful. I will contact the administrators to see if I can add these videos!

Nice Classic; Has it been started and driven in the last 10 years? Perhaps a few videos of cold start and it going through the gears would be really helpful. Thanks
