Available for auction is this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 finished in Black over a black vinyl interior. One of the most iconic muscle cars of the era, the 1970 Chevelle featured revised styling and was offered with a range of powerful V8 engines.  This example is said to have been fully restored and is equipped with a correct-type 396ci Big Block V8 paired with an M20 4-speed manual gearbox, as well as factory optional air conditioning, F41 performance suspension, 3.31 Posi rear end, tinted glass, power steering, and power-assisted brakes. This Chevelle has also been tastefully upgraded with a high-rise aluminum intake manifold, headers, Flowmaster mufflers, and Hotchkiss suspension components.  An excellent choice for any muscle car enthusiast, this stunning 1970 Chevelle SS is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This Chevelle comes finished in Black with double white top stripes and a functional cowl induction hood. For 1970, the Chevelle received a styling update with SS 396 models featuring a new "power dome" hood, black-accented grille, and a special rear-bumper insert. The seller notes the car was completely refinished during its restoration and describes the paint to be in show-quality condition throughout. Additional images are provided in the gallery.  The stock 14″ SS wheels come dressed in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires.

The black vinyl interior comes fitted with a pair of Strato bucket seats and factory equipment including tinted glass, air conditioning, a full suite of gauges, and an SS steering wheel. The seller notes the cabin remains in excellent condition and confirms that all gauges, lights, and accessories remain fully functional including the air conditioning.

Power comes from a 396ci Big Block V8 engine upgraded with a high-rise aluminum intake manifold, headers, and a performance exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers.  The original cast iron intake manifold is also said to accompany the sale. The engine is believed to be original to the car and images of the serial numbers are provided in the gallery along with an image of the original build sheet.  The rear wheels are driven by way of an M20 4-speed manual gearbox with a 3.31 Positraction rear end. The factory F41 performance suspension has been further enhanced with various upgraded Hotchkiss components including a larger front sway bar. Stopping power comes from factory power-assisted brakes with front discs.

This sale will include the original build sheet, intake manifold, and a clean title. Generously equipped from the factory and nicely restored with a few tasteful performance upgrades, this Chevelle SS is not to be missed.

@RobbyBob Hello. As part of the auction culture, we ask that you refrain from asking the seller questions in regards to reserve. Please be advised that the reserve is private for the benefit of all and that each bid should be viewed as a possible winning bid. If your desire is to own the car, best to get in on the bidding as you may lose it by staying out of the running. In the event that the car does not meet reserve, top bidders are given the first right of refusal .

Has the reserve been met yet?

  • CorvetteMike (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@RobbyBob Unfortunately, I don't know much about the engine rebuild, as far as what was done. It could be stock internally, although it does have an aluminum manifold and headers. All I can tell you is the car runs and drives beautifully! Everything works and it's got excellent power and response. It's an outstanding, no excuse Chevelle.

  • RobbyBob (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    Thank you for that update.
Has an internal engine work been done on this big block?

  • CorvetteMike (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@RobbyBob Hi. Yes, this was a complete frame-off restoration. The paint is some of the nicest I've ever seen on a metal car, as is the rest of the work.

@racedeck Yes, it’s a real SS 396 with a matching #’s engine. If you look at the Build Sheet, it lists the SS equipment on it.

  • racedeck (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

The description has a few terms that open to interpretation and comments from seller about … Just to clarify, this is a ‘SS 396 Chevelle ‘ from the factory? It is numbers matching as from the factory? -

@KSJ1865 Hi. The engine is correct and #’s matching. I will post a photo of the engine #’s on Monday morning.

  • KSJ1865 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

The description states " correct-type 396ci Big Block V8". Is that a matching numbers engine (original) or a period correct replacement engine?

  • Handsofstone (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Typically, it would be on the passenger side in front of the head there is a pad space where it would have a partial vin number and also the Tonawanda stamping etc., but I think it can depend a bit on where the car was built, at which plant. No problem, just thought it was weird as the front pad VIN is pretty easy to look at. Thanks

  • CorvetteMike (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Handsofstone Hi. The V.I.N. stamp on a 396 is actually located near the oil filter. A photo of it should have been posted. I would be happy to post one on Monday morning, as I won’t have access until then. However, I can assure you the #’s are correct on this engine.

  • Handsofstone (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

The picture of the trans also does not really tell anything other than it is a M20 or M22. They are also stamped with a code that tells there date of manufacture and what they are....basically an M20 or M21 and either a close ratio trans or a wide ratio trans.

  • Handsofstone (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Jeff, Not the 1st car Corvette Mike has sold. I think what is needed is to take a picture of the front of the engine pad with all the numbers on it. That tells all the bidders basically if this is an original motor or not. Corvette Mike has done this with many Corvette's whether they are small block motors or Big Block motors. I am a bit surprised that this wasn't done. Can you have the picture taken and posted so all the bidders know what they are bidding on? It would be appreciated.

    @CorvetteMike thanks

  • CorvetteMike (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@INOV8 Hi. To be honest, I don't know what all of the aftermarket components are. From what I can see, they seem to be mostly Hotchkis pieces. It could be heavy duty front springs that are causing the front end to sit up. I don't imagine it would be too difficult to get it down to stock height again.

  • INOV8 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

With the suspension that is on it, how difficult would it be to get the front end down so the car sits level?

  • CorvetteMike (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Good afternoon, everybody! My name is Jeff Romm. I'm the sales manager at Corvette Mike. I'll be here throughout the auction to answer whatever questions you may have regarding this awesome Chevelle. Good luck and happy bidding!
