An exotic four-seater grand touring car, the Lamborghini Espada was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and was produced from 1968 until 1978 with 1,227 examples built in total over three different series. This 1970 Lamborghini Espada is one of 575 Series II examples built between 1970 and 1972. It comes finished in red over a black leather interior and is powered by a 3.9-liter quad-cam V12 paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. It was acquired by the seller in 2010 and was extensively serviced between 2021 and 2023 including a new clutch, sway bar bushings, a brake booster, a rebuilt differential, new tires, and air conditioning system service. A striking representation of classic Italian design, this Espada is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The Espada was originally designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone featuring a traditional wedge-shaped profile with sharp and angular lines as well as a unique fixed glass tail panel above the taillights. Other details include an aluminum front hood with twin NACA ducts, front fender vents, louvered rear quarter vents, pop-out side windows, a heated glass rear window, a fender-mounted antenna, chrome bumpers, quad exhaust tailpipes, a black wire mesh front grille, and Bertone fender badges. This 1970 example is finished in red and rides on factory 7” x 15” Campagnolo magnesium alloy wheels with knock-off hubs. The seller indicates that new Kumho Solus TA11 tires were mounted in 2021 along with repairs to the headlights and taillights. Areas of the car were previously refinished, and some overspray is noted on the engine compartment. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The Espada Series II featured an all-new dashboard with a wood-trimmed fascia as well as a revised center console, instrument panel, and improved rear-seat ventilation. This example’s interior is lined with black carpeting and matching leather upholstery covering the seats, door panels, dashboard, and center console. Accessories include black carpet floor mats, a three-spoke wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, a central-mounted clock, a Lamborghini-crested shift knob, analog Jaeger instrumentation, and an aftermarket Sparkomatic AM/FM cassette stereo mounted above the glovebox. The air conditioning system was serviced and recharged in 2021 along with replacement drive gears for the speedometer.

Derived from the 400 GT 2+2 sports car, the Lamborghini Espada is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V12 engine featuring quad overhead camshafts and six Weber carburetors. The Series II model received a higher compression ratio resulting in an output of 350 HP and 290 lb.-ft of torque which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The Series II also came equipped as standard with vacuum-assisted Girling vented disc brakes at each corner as well as double wishbone coil spring suspension with anti-roll bars front and rear. The clutch is said to have been replaced in 2021 along with new valve and cam cover gaskets, a replacement flex disc and seals, a rebuilt differential, a new brake booster, emergency brake pads, and sway bar bushings.

RNM on BAT last week at $94K. The GT car market is very soft right now. Not sure what the market is at this point. Great for people who love these cars.
