In 1968, BMW unveiled the 2002 as the successor to its 1600-2 model, enhancing its performance with a larger displacement while maintaining its renowned craftsmanship and iconic design. This 1971 example, powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, underwent comprehensive restoration exceeding $45k. Finished in Riviera Blue over a Skai vinyl interior, it features numerous enhancements such as a header and exhaust system, upgraded suspension, bucket seats, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, stainless short rear bumper, 13” Compomotive Minilite-style wheels, a Sears Kenmore radio, and much more. This BMW 2002 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

This example underwent restoration, including a refinish in its factory-specified Riviera Blue shade and undercarriage sanitation. It showcases round taillights, a chrome front bumper with overriders, stainless-steel beltline trim, pop-out rear side windows, pivoting vent windows, a driver’s side door mirror, a chrome fuel filler cap, a red tip radio antenna, and stainless-steel windshield wipers. Upgrades comprise a stainless short rear bumper, flush-mounted front turn signals, Yellow Cibie fog lights, and tinted glass. It rides on 13” Compomotive Minilite-style wheels with Toyo RA1 tires. The seller notes minor imperfections, including paint chips on the front fascia, a scratch on the front bumper, left front headlight trim, right door, and right rear fender, along with a paint imperfection on the left rear wheel arch and a minor crack on the left of the hood and right front fender. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin boasts twin bucket seats upholstered in Skai vinyl with textured inserts, matched by door panels and carpeting. It features a Momo Prototipo leather-wrapped steering wheel, a steering lock, three-point seat belts, a heater, door-mounted armrests, adjustable headrests, Coco mats, manual roll-up side windows, and a period-correct Sears Kenmore radio. The original headliner was replaced with factory-correct German material in 2023 at a cost of $2,300. The seller notes a minor crack in the steering column cover and confirms all gauges and electronics are in proper working order.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter M10 inline-four that delivers a factory-rated 125 HP and 127 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. Performance has been enhanced with an Ireland Engineering header and exhaust system, while the suspension benefits from upgraded springs and sway bars also sourced from Ireland Engineering.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a toolkit, the original steering wheel, a dealership invoice from Hoffman, additional service records, and a registration.

Hello all. The time has come for my lovely 2002 to get a new caretaker. I have had several of these cars when I was younger and worked at a BMW shop in the 90s when there were still several of these cars on the road. This is one of the best examples I've encountered. It's been an absolute pleasure to have added some miles on the clock. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to the end of auction. The reserve is very reasonable and I fully expect the car to sell.
