The Dodge Challenger was introduced for the 1970 model year as Mopar’s competitor to the Pontiac Firebird and Mercury Cougar in the emerging pony car segment. This 1971 example is finished in the unmistakable Challenger color of Plum Crazy over a white vinyl interior. It carries a 318ci V8 engine which corresponds with the original chassis code and sends power to the rear wheels through a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Said to have undergone a previous restoration, this American muscle icon is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

This Challenger was refinished in Plum Crazy during a previous restoration and is believed to have been the car’s original color according to the seller. It features a unique split front grille design which was used for the 1971 model year only. The body is decorated with white R/T-style stripes along with a vented R/T hood, a black T/A-style ducktail spoiler, chrome hood pins, dual chrome mirrors, and a fender-mounted chrome antenna. The seller notes that some minor imperfections can be seen upon close inspection, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The white vinyl interior features a matching headliner with a contrasting black dashboard and carpeting as well as woodgrain inlays on the center console and door panels. Accessories include a three-spoke steering wheel, a console-mounted shifter, adjustable bucket seats, a factory Chrysler radio, and a decorative Challenger badge on the passenger-side dashboard. The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be operational.

This 1971 Challenger came factory equipped with an LA-series 318ci (5.2L) V8 pushrod OHV engine featuring a 2-barrel carburetor and an original output of 230 HP. This example includes an aftermarket Edelbrock air cleaner and an optional 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The seller states an oil change and tune-up have been completed in preparation for the next owner.

This sale will include a clean title.

    @matpatte From 1 to 10 I would give this car a 7

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

What grade would you give the prior restoration?

What grade would you give the paint work?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@matpatte I’m currently out of town, so I won’t be able to take any more pictures in time. Like stated prior, there are minor paint blemishes here and there but nothing out of the ordinary. There is nothing wrong with the rocker. We haven’t noticed any leaks, and there is NO white or blue smoke.

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Oh, and what is up with the blue headlight on the passenger side?

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Please upload close pics of the front airdam in the middle where it looks like paint damage.

Also, still looking for a picture of the passenger quarter panel corner directly from behind the tire, photo taken from the ground racing the sky.

Any fluids leaks of any kind? Any white or blue smoke from exhaust on cold startup? Video of cold startup?

    Thank you!

This reminds me of how we used to find the real deal muscle cars in the early 80’s! @lukautogroup how do you present this car with a missing lug nut? @matpatte what you’re seeing on the driver’s exhaust manifold was for the heat tube to the original air cleaner. And for the valve cover breather, that nipple should be capped off. This is a “challenging” Challenger. Buy it for what it is.

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@matpatte No, I believe that’s how it should be. As for the speakers. There are no speakers currently installed, which is seen in the photos. Also the stud is not stripped.

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Oh and I forgot to ask about the missing lug nut. Is that stud stripped or damaged?

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Is that a nipple open to atmosphere sucking dirt into the engine on the passenger side valve cover breather?

Is that driver side exhaust manifold missing something on top? Looks like it has a big hole in it facing up at the hood?

Does the radio work? Any speakers present?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@matpatte We always recommend enclosed transport for first-time cross-country trips on any classic car until you get to know your vehicle. We can fully arrange transport in-house. Our service is fast and affordable.

Is this car ready to drive across the country if I were to win and fly in?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@matpatte The photo you requested has been uploaded. As for gearing we believe it is 3.23 or 3.55.

    Thanks, what gears?

Can you please take a couple pics of that lower quarter corner behind the passenger tire from below?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@matpatte There’s nothing out of the ordinary in the quarter behind the rear passenger wheel. As for the chrome trim, it needs a slight adjustment. The rear chrome bumper has some corrosion which is seen in the photos. Please note that this is a driver-quality car and not a Concours restoration. There will be some defects here and there, but overall it is a great car and definitely turns heads, especially with its iconic plum crazy color.

  • matpatte (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Is that some cancer forming in the lower quarter behind the passenger rear tire at the bottom corner?

What is going on with the driver side rear of the trunk lid? The chrome trim is way out of line.

    Rear bumper corrosion?

Can you post more pics of those 3 items?

What gears are in the rear end?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@SilverRose The trunk photos have been added to the gallery.

@SilverRose Unfortunately, the fender tag is missing, which is a common occurrence on previous restorations. This car has a great stance and has adjustable air suspension in the rear. I will have trunk photos uploaded tomorrow.

    Thank you for your interest!

  • SilverRose (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@LukAutoGroup - have the fender tag? Please send photo. What's going on w/ the back? Mini-tub to fit those wheels? Can you show inside trunk w/ mat lifted?

  • LukAutoGroup (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

Hello everyone, welcome to Luk Auto Group. I’ll be here to answer any of your questions. We can fully arrange transport for the winning bidder, so bid with confidence. Don’t miss your chance to own this American icon. Good luck and happy bidding.
