One of 935 examples produced for the model year, this 1971 Porsche 911E Targa is finished in burgundy over a customized interior with black vinyl and houndstooth upholstered Recaro-style bucket seats. It features an upgraded 3.2-liter flat-six Carrera engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle as well as a stainless-steel exhaust, 911SC disc brakes, 22mm/28mm torsion bars, polished 15” Fuchs wheels, a 911S-style front spoiler, a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, lightweight door panels, a rear seat delete, and more. Cared for by the previous owner since the 1990s, this tastefully modified 911E Targa was acquired by the seller in December 2022 and is now being offered for auction out of New York.

This 911E is said to have been refinished in the current burgundy color by Automobile Associates of Canton, Connecticut, over 15 years ago. It features a 911S-style front spoiler, H4 headlamps, chrome door handles and window trim, aluminum rocker moldings, gold badging, a polished driver’s side mirror, factory-tinted windows, and 15” Fuchs alloy wheels in a custom polished silver finish to match the Targa bar. The seller notes that the paint remains in very good overall condition while showing some imperfections from normal road wear. The tires are also recommended for replacement due to age. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The interior is lined with charcoal carpeting and features black vinyl Recaro-style bucket seats with custom houndstooth cloth centers. Other accessories include lightweight door panels with leather pull straps and manual window cranks, a three-spoke MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, three-point front seatbelts, VDO gauges, a Sony CD stereo, and aftermarket speakers. The rear seats have been removed and gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional.

This 911E has been equipped with an upgraded 3.2-liter flat-six Carrera engine which was rebuilt and installed by Hairy Dog Grrrage in Southbury, Connecticut, under prior ownership. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed 915 manual transaxle. Other features include a stainless-steel exhaust, 911SCS disc brakes, and thicker-diameter torsion bars measuring 22mm up front and 28mm in the rear. The seller adds that a recent service has been completed including new fluids.

This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, extra brake pads, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “It is incredibly quick, feels light, and very nimble. Fantastic car to drive.”

@JohnBlackyoldtimer I will try to take a better photo of the engine number. Surprisingly, this car is very tight! No squeaks or rattles. I noticed that as soon as I purchased the car and was pleasantly surprised.
Automobile Associates did the body respray in 2002. I do not have any photos from that period.
I can say that the body is as straight as an arrow as are all of the restorations they do. Their work is top notch!

This is an absolutely gorgeous car, unfortunately also out of my budget. Long hood, 3.2, 915 and that interior. Jacobs/Hairy Dog definitely a good resource for southern New England/NY guys. Good luck with the auction hopefully it stays local.

Yes, a very nice car, great color, good condition and better engine. Unfortunately I can't recognize the engine number correctly. If it is 64F02300, then I cannot find this number in the Porsche documents. The numbers are listed there as either 63F... for 1985 or as 64J,H,K.... for 1987,8,9. A Carrea engine from 1984 should have had this number E 63E 00001-10000. Maybe you can clear this up and post a better photo. . Are there any pictures of the body restoration? Targas often have the problem that the targa roof squeaks. Do you know if this is the case with this car?

Burgundy has always been one of my least favorite colors. Well, not anymore. This is absolutely words-cannot-describe gorgeous!!!

I just uploaded copies of some of the service receipts showing ownership from the mid 90's.
Automobile Associates performed the respray back in 05/2002. Their work is among the best out there. The car still shows incredibly well with only minor stone ships from normal driving.
Other receipts show constant maintenance documenting the care this car has had its life with the past long term owner.
Daniel Jacobs AKA Hairy Dog Grrrage installed the 3.2 engine in July of 2002. The engine was a fresh rebuild at the time. It has been driven limited miles since the installation. Again, the dates on the receipts show steady maintenance.
We recently installed the reproduction Sport Seats with the special ordered color coordinated houndstooth inserts at a cost of over $5500.
This is a very tidy exciting car to drive. It is considerably faster than any 911 S of that period and much more drivable.
Thanks for all the kind comments. This car will not disappoint and is even prettier in person.

You got the best combination here. An early long hood with 3.2 motor and a 915 trans . Should do very well! You basically have a Carrera in a classic body.

@Luft87 Just some extra brake pads. The brakes were upgraded so having extra pads is not a bad idea. No original rear seats but they are readily available.

  • Luft87 (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

@driverm thnx. Any parts included in the sale that’s not listed, rear seats, etc?

  • DriverM (seller) 4 monthsago

@renchris It is a rust free car. I will post the records that I have showing the respray and mechanical work that was done. The doctor that owned it for the past 25 plus years was very mechanically inclined and did much of the normal service work this car as well as many others in his collection by himself. He was also a very accomplished driver as well having driven competitively at Daytona as well as other races.

  • renchris 4 monthsago

    Any records of rust repair?

  • DriverM (seller) 4 monthsago

@Luft87 I was told by the former owner that the current miles shown are original. The engine was from a 1984 Carrera and miles were in the 50's when it was installed. Less than 10k have been put on the car since with the car having been well maintained since its build.

Do you know the mileage on both the chassis and the swapped engine? What was the approximate mileage before the engine swap, and how many miles were on the engine when it was installed?

    @Dsscpa00 Correct. No A/C.

  • Dsscpa00 (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

    Assuming no A/C

  • DriverM (seller) 4 monthsago

@robdsaunders This is the original color. I do have service history dating back to the late 90’s. I will upload it.

  • robdsaunders (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Stunning looking car by the way!

  • robdsaunders (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

I might as well ask; any documentation on the work performed, general history or info on the original color? TIA
