We are pleased to present this 1971 Porsche 911T Targa presented in the rare factory color of Albert Blue.  Purchased by its current owner in 2019, this U.S.-market 1971 example underwent a recent no-expense-spared full restoration including a complete engine rebuild carried out by legendary racing technician Volker Bruckmann.  Showcasing classic long-hood Porsche styling and a visceral 2.2 L carbureted engine, this beautifully restored 1971 Targa is now being offered by its seller in California accompanied by restoration invoices and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Upon the seller’s purchase last year, this Targa was fully disassembled, sanded, and treated for rust-prevention before being completely refinished in its rare factory color of Albert Blue.  Offered between the model years of 1970-1972, this special non-metallic shade of blue remains one of the most highly sought-after Porsche colors of all time.  New body seals, trim pieces, and exterior lighting were installed during the restoration along with a new rear decklid grille.  All new replacement parts were sourced exclusively from the Sierra Madre Collection in California.

The cabin has been completely restored in its factory-correct Black leatherette upholstery.  Original options listed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity include Automatic Safety Belts, an Antenna with Loudspeaker, Tinted Glass All-Around, and Comfort Equipment which includes a leather-covered steering wheel, aluminum doorsills, and 911S-type dashboard gauges.  The seller confirms all instruments and accessories to be working properly.

This 911T is equipped with a series-correct 2.2 L carbureted flat-six engine which is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.  The engine has been completely rebuilt by legendary racing technician Volker Bruckmann, who used his own method known as pre-seating which reduces excessive oil consumption that these engines are known for. The same engine-building methods were used that led various racing cars to victory at historic events including the 24-hours of Sebring and Baja 1000.  An upgraded Dansk muffler was installed during the rebuild along with SSI heat exchangers.  Images from the engine overhaul and restoration process are included in the photo gallery and the seller indicates that less than 500 miles have been driven since the completion of the restorative work. Additionally, another $13k was spent recently on a major mechanical service to ensure the car is in top running condition.

This sale will include 1 master key, a spare tire, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and invoices from the restoration. Presented in Albert Blue, this fully-restored Targa makes the perfect choice for any discerning enthusiast, do not let this opportunity pass you by.

Regarding the steering wheel, yes as I have mentioned in my previous posts, it is in original condition as you can see from the pictures . I did not restore it. I was thinking of replacing it with newer wheel.

  • Porscheguy (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Engine is not number matching. I thought it was in the write-up.

  • captgiddyup (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Strangest opening “bid” I’ve ever seen

  • Speeder37 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Carrerafan I don’t think there was an answer regarding this car being numbers matching or not.
It does make quite a difference. Without the question being answered, I would assume that neither the transmission nor the motor are original to the car?

Great color and most of everything else. A few exceptions.
    Don't see Carrera tensioners.
Interior needs spruced, with emphasis on steering wheel.
Targa top in poor condition with what looks like incorrect vinyl over worn out inners.
These things are fixable and would make it a 5 Star Porsche.

  • Carrerafan (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Hi, description says "series correct' engine, so I assume it is a non-original engine and transmission, is that correct? It looks like the suspension is raised and are the tires oversized? The drivers side front small grill near the parking lights looks a little out of alignment, and the rear deck lid/engine cover appears out of alignment. can you pls comment?

Several people messaged me inquiring about the history of the car and the condition it was in prior to restoration, please read below:

    History of the car:
This 911T Targa came out of production on February of 1971 in Germany and made in way to USA as US Spec car. Exterior color was very rare Albert Blue (albertblau) with Black interior. Car had been sitting in Chuck Croteaue of Redline Service's garage for a long time and he finally agreed to sell it to the current owner to be restored. Redline Service ( https://redlineservice.com ) is a well-known Porsche shop that has been in business forever. I received the car with some rust. Most of the original Albert Blue color had been sanded out or faded. The engine felt strong but was not very smooth. I drove it in my neighborhood for few weeks before deciding to get it completely overhauled by Volker Bruckmann who is legendary engine builder and racer whose experience dates back to assisting 1970s Porsche Salzburg team with Factory 917 Porsche. Car was missing seals, trim pieces, dash, wipers, and many other items. The suspension had seen better days, tires were old, there were lots of rattling noise . Car came with beautiful red interior that was not correct for the car. I decided to completely restore the car, replaced with new parts sourced Sierra Madre collection of California.

Looks like some of the invoice pictures did not get uploaded here. Let me provide a summary of some of the parts not being mentioned in the writeup.
    • New SSI stainless steel heat exchangers
    • New Dansk muffler
    • New clutch kit
    • New bake system
    • New washer wiper/washer system
    • New engine with all new parts apart from the factory Airbox
    • We also sourced new (NOS) Webber carburetor set as you can see from the pictures. I think I paid $4000 for it.
    • New steering rack and other suspension stuff
    • New tires
    • New carpeting and upholstery
    • Rubber and seals for pretty much the entire car.
    • List goes on, pretty much everything is new.

I have about $20k worth of receipts from Sierra Madre Collection (https://sierramadrecollection.com). These include rubber and seal parts, brakes systems, windshield system, knobs, lights, bumper hardware parts, pedals, wheel lug nuts, latch systems, exhausts, door parts etc, etc. you can see the involves in the restoration website I provided (see my previous comments)
In addition to Sierra Madre Collection , I bought SSI stainless steel heat exchangers, (NOS) Webber carburetor set, and also all the parts for the engine rebuilt, new steering rack, tires and other original factory used parts sourced from all used Porsche parts markets. I think I am forgetting a lot here. All in all, I have spent lots of money, I will NOT recover my cost even if it goes well over the reserve price. I had lots of fun restoring it and its worth the cost.

I have some updates regarding the engine:
The Engine was initially rebuilt (nuts and bolts rebuild) by Volker several months ago. A little over a month ago, I found an oil leak around the seals due to a head bolt issue. I decided to overhaul it again but this time with better preventive measures such as Engine Case savers, bigger high strength engine studs etc. Second time around I took to a close by San Diego Porsche only shop (Personalized AutoHaus) which is a high end Porsche boutique shop specialized in air cooled Porsches restoration and vintage Porsche racing. Volker was not available due to health reasons hence working with AutoHaus.
The shop machined everything to spec again. Now not a drop of oil is leaking. The shop also replaced a lot the parts that will help longevity. Also installed new steering rack and bunch of other stuff. Please look at the receipts for more details. I spent over $13,000 on top of the original engine rebuild. I did not want prospective new owner to have issues with engine.
I will have Pcarmarket upload new pictures of the engine rebuild etc.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
