This 1970 Porsche 914/6 comes finished in a gray metallic shade over black leatherette upholstery. It was treated with a refurbishment by the specialists at Redmond European of Redmond, Washington, between 2012 and 2015, including an engine rebuild. This example has also been equipped with 14" Fuchs wheels, a Rennshift polished shifter, twin PMO-style carburetors, electronic ignition, and more. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 914/6 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia.

Originally finished in Irish Green, this 914/6 was professionally refinished in its current metallic gray shade with a black removable roof panel and matching vinyl sail panels refinished by Bozeman Autobody in Montana in 2017. The rubber exterior moldings have been replaced and the 14” Fuchs are mounted with BFGoodrich tires from 2011 said to remain in like-new condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this two-seater presents a refurbished black vinyl interior including upgraded perforated seat inserts, color-matched door panels, a stitched upper dashboard, and salt & pepper carpets. Amenities include a leather-wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel, three-point seatbelts, an aftermarket Rennshift polished shifter, a heater, and a RetroSound head unit. The tachometer is said to have been rebuilt in 2015, and all gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

The 914/6 equips an air-cooled 2.0-liter flat-six engine borrowed from the 911T, contrasting the standard 914 models that received 4-cylinder Volkswagen engines. Up to 110 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed Type 914/01 5-speed manual transmission. The 6-cylinder variant was also equipped from the factory with lower gear ratios and larger brakes to account for the added weight of the larger engine. An engine rebuild by Redmond European is reported along with the installation of twin PMO-style carburetors and a Pertronix electronic ignition module. The engine casing stamping shows #6404822, matching the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This sale will include a clean title, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and some service records.

Limited knowledge of the 914, however, seems like a lot of money and still a substantial way to end
( is it just the 6 cyl. motor that’s driving the high bids ? )
    Good luck all

What an awesome car. I might have to head over and check it out once the auction ends.

  • EVantage (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

Well, the bidding just covered the cost of the restoration! Getting closer!

Actually, as the original year of 914-6 introduction, the 1970 914-6 is the preferred year.

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 monthsago

$54,319 spent on restoration with receipts, just uploaded a picture of the breakdown but have individual copies as well.

  • Davenorcal (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

    To all 914/6 fans…why is a 1971 (or ‘72) a better model year than a ‘70?

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 monthsago

    @Footnfan make this a reality!

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 monthsago

@mottcom books, tools, original certificate of authenticity, and records available.

  • Footnfan (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

@IXXXInut. You are probably correct, I’m old!!! Faulty memory!!

  • IXXINut (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

@footfan 1971s still had the fixed passenger seat. 1972 was the first year for the movable right seat but the handful of 1972 914-6s that were made were not sold new in the USA.

Adding to @mottcom’s comment, from what I can tell, the car was delivered new in Finland. If that’s so, are there any import docs? And agreed, beautiful restoration (albeit I am partial to Irish Green). It stands on its own merit, but given the rarity, the docs would go a long way in justifying a high bid.

Any books, tools, or manuals included with the car? I see what could be an owner's manual in image 53.

Any refurbishment, service records, or owner history still with the car?

No history recited in the listing, but appears to be sold by Fantasy Junction sale in 2019 and 2021. RNM at $83,500 on BaT. Listed recently on eBay, Bullet Motorsports, and Maserati of Washington for $115K. Should give some idea of the reserve.

The Fantasy Junction listing has some history and details: https://www.fantasyjunction.com/sold/1970-porsche-914-6-3/overview

Even as a 70, these are fun. Passenger seat gave it away for me, IIRC, 71 sixes has a sliding passenger seat

  • Footnfan (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

Great cars, we owned a 71/6 purchased from Trans Am champ Tom Gloy. Superb cars, may need one to finish my car collector obsession!

  • montecarlobeach (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

Sensational looking example. Good luck with the sale.

Here's just an observation (forgive me if it's snarky). It seems lately we're starting to treat some used cars as if they're relics from an ancient and sacred religious enterprise. I get that originality matters, and that there's value associated with certain elements of cars and their histories. That said, my observation is that the further down the Porsche food chain we go, the higher the level of scrutiny. What gives? Is it because the people nearer the top have more wealth and so, their automotive "investments" mean less to them? I love 914s. I've had several 914s and would welcome another. I also (by way of contrast) have an original '91 Carrera RS (that I bought for $25k when it was just a loud used car). It feels like the pocket-protector crowds gather much more thickly around the 914s in this world, damning perfectly good cars by pointing out that "those wipers were from 1973 and not 1971" and "those hose clamps were never used by the factory." It makes no sense to me that at the low end, there seems to be so much more vitriolic pursuit of owners who don't stick precisely to the script.

Again, this car looks great to me. I don't know the seller but wish everyone well.

Nice car and well presented. But the color change and a few bits may impact its value to the purest.
Car was RNM on BAT last month.

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

@rwbuck under carriage and engine pictures uploaded!

I’ve seen and driven this car…impeccable restoration and very sound mechanically.

These cars are for Porsche what the Dino was for Ferrari…very powerful and competent car with strong engine on a light chassis. These handle like they are on rails.

  • mtnmanagement (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

@dsdepew Agreed...ebay runs multiple formats including but not limited to auctions
    And buy it now price.

It's just a question to the seller
As Ferrari frank has zero history
And stated there's multiple discrepancy in the listing. Hopefully it will be amended

  • dsdepew (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

@mtnmanagement this an auction format, not ebay……

Seller isn’t doing himself any favors here. Not instilling confidence to bid imho.

  • rwbuck (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

Could you post some pictures of the engine compartment and the undercarriage? Much appreciated.

  • jpnorthwood (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

ONLY reason I clicked to view this listing is the fact header title showing as a '71... Moving on.

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

@IXXINut you are correct, we went with 1971 since that's the way it was listed on the title. Could have been a clerical mistake from the DMV.

  • FerrariFrank (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

IXXINut you are correct, we went with 1971 since that's the way it was listed on the title. Could have been a clerical mistake from the DMV.

  • IXXINut (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

The picture of the certificate of authenticity #80 shows it as a 1970 also.

  • IXXINut (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

    This is not a 1971. The 4th digit identifies the year. 0= 1970 1=1971 2=1972. It is a 1970.

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

That’s a strong money for an opening bid
Agreed. This is a good looking Porsche 914 and a six cylinder.
    Good luck all
