Launched in 1967 for the 1968 model year, the Javelin served as AMCs entrant into the pony car segment and would go on to win the Trans-am racing series in 1971,72, and 76. This 1972 example came into the seller's possession twelve years ago and has been kept in a climate-controlled dehumidified storage facility while driven for maintenance five miles per month. Modified with AMX Go Package styling along with an upgraded 401ci V8 engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, this AMC is now being offered for auction.

The restyled second-generation Javelin was longer, lower, and wider than its predecessor, and featured an integrated roof spoiler and sculpted front fender bulges to accommodate oversized racing tires. This Javelin is finished in Mustard Yellow with a T-stripe hood decal and black vinyl roof panel. The seller notes that the finish is in excellent overall condition, as well as the chrome trim and vinyl roof. Details include side-exit exhaust pipes, “401”, “AMX” and “Hurst” badging, rear window louvers, and 15″ rallye wheels dressed in a set of older BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

The seats are upholstered in black vinyl with matching door panels and carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, and AM/FM radio, lap belts, roll-up windows, and a Hurst shifter. The seller notes that the cabin remains in excellent overall condition with all gauges and accessories working proeprly.

Power comes from an upgraded 401ci V8 engine equipped with a Holley carburetor, driving the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes the car has been regularly maintained and driven on a monthly basis over the past twelve years.

This sale will include a clean title.

The person who restored this just picked all his favorite Javelin components and options and put it all together. Nothing wrong with that. For example, Mustard Yellow was a Javelin color but it was not offerred in 1972.

  • BuckD8 1 year, 4 monthsago

Why does it look like a 71 rear??

  • Floridaclassiccars (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@mcorrallo Thank you for your research. A rep at Pcar did do the research and came up with this. When the vin was decoded it is an original SST and was restored and unbadged to an AMX with the Hurst 4 speed, 401 engine and styling.

  • mcorrallo (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Answered my own questions. It was an SST with 304-2V engine and 3 spd on the floor. It is now an AMX 401 Hurst clone. Don't know about the "GO" package.

Not a great investment vehicle. Buy it because you want to drive it.

  • mcorrallo (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

We can all see what it is now but I think we need a better understanding of how this car came from the factory. What engine? What transmission? What trim package? There must be some Javelin experts here. Can the VIN reveal that information?

  • Floridaclassiccars (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@mcorrallo You are correct that we were low on fuel. But made it to the gas station in time.

  • mcorrallo (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

Looks like the gas gauge doesn't work, unless they were running in fumes during the start up and test drive.

  • BLACKWATER 1 year, 4 monthsago

The best-looking like muscle car has not gotten the respect it deserves. Saw a recent article (maybe Hagerty) that these are due to climb in value since being underpriced for decades. Not sure of the exact year or specs, though, maybe the AMX. The Exterior and dash are just superb! Looks pristine!

  • Flatplane 1 year, 4 monthsago

    Was this an automatic converted into a 401 with a 4-spped? I've owned a 1969 and I recall that 4-speed cars didn't come with a console.

  • SilverRose (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@seller and @pcar - are we sure this is an "SST?" This seems to be an AMX, the hood on an SST is different as is the grill. So it was an SST turned into an AMX or it's an AMX not an SST. Documentation on the SST variant?

  • Floridaclassiccars (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

I believe the go package was part of the original build

    @SilverRose @SilverRose

  • Floridaclassiccars (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@SilverRose Hello and thank you for your question. I believe the 401 engine and the Hurst for speed transmission were added as a customization.

  • SilverRose (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@seller - and "modified w/ go package" same? Ordered as an option or added later?

  • SilverRose (registered bidder) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@seller - does "upgraded 401 engine" mean as a factory option or as a customization please?

  • liedoctor 1 year, 4 monthsago

I have always found the early 70s Javelins to be the best-looking muscle cars of that era...GLWTA!
