A historic automotive prototype, the Citroën M35 is a compact two-door coupe derived from the Ami 8 and was created as an experimental vehicle equipped with a Wankel engine and hydropneumatic suspension. The M35 was never officially sold, instead, it was given to top Citroën customers for their review and feedback towards future models. While 500 units were planned to be built in total, only 267 were ultimately produced. The car’s warranty was recalled by Citroën in 1974 and owners were offered a generous trade-in offer on a new car, while all the M35s that were returned to Citroën were eventually destroyed. This example, no. 424, was retained by its original owner and remained in Europe until 2004 when it was imported to Canada. The car had reportedly been a static museum display and was completely refurbished for road use with a rebuilt engine. As previously listed on PCARMARKET, this rare Citroën is now being offered for auction out of Canada.
The M35’s bodywork is similar to the four-door Ami 8 it was based on, featuring a unique downward-curved bonnet and covered rear wheels. These experimental cars include prototype designation of the front fenders along with a banner on the rear window reading in French “This Citroën M35 prototype fitted with a rotary piston engine is undergoing long-term testing at the hands of a Citroën customer.” Other details include chrome trim and bumpers, a driver’s side mirror, and body-colored steel wheels with chromed hubcaps.
The cabin features black and silver vinyl upholstery with basketweave pattern seat centers and brown constants on the door panels. Accessories include a single-spoke steering wheel, manual windows, an analog clock, a Veglia speedometer, and an aftermarket Jaeger tachometer to the right of the steering wheel.
The M35 is powered by a 49cc single-rotor Wankel engine from Comotor, a company that was formed in conjunction with NSU and Citroën in 1967. It delivers up to 49 HP to the front wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller indicates the engine has been rebuilt and the car is in full operating condition.
This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, an owner's manual, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: "Proud to present to Pcarmaket Audience a Prestigious Collection of the most sophisticated Citroën out there, all in beautiful to Perfect Conservation condition. The first to be launched is/was a little-known model, even new to seasoned Citroën enthusiasts. The Fabulous M35 was a prototype not sold to the public, but offered to the best, most select clients back then. This car traveled, from one collection to the next for decades in Europe. It was exported to Canada in 2004 and then underwent an engine Restoration to put it back on the road to fulfill its original mission. To Be Driven! The car is driven constantly. Great Overall shape in the original Patina, the one you can’t fake. HydroPneumatic suspension( similar to the DS ) works perfectly. BID, a lot, to WIN!"
