Launched as Citroën’s flagship grand tourer, the SM offers innovative French engineering with Italian performance, featuring a Maserati-built 2.7-liter V6 engine, front-wheel drive, aerodynamic styling by Robert Opron, and Citroën’s signature hydropneumatic suspension. This 1972 example is finished in Metallic Sand over a black leather interior and comes equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, a DIRAVI variable-assist steering, four-wheel disc brakes, 15” steel wheels, front bucket seats, air conditioning, and more. This SM is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

Styled by Citroën’s chief designer Robert Opron, the fastback coupe body features a long hood, steeply raked windshield, and a Kamm tail with a narrower rear track than the front. This example is finished in Metallic Sand and comes equipped with US-specification quad headlights and turn signals, bright bumpers, a driver’s side mirror, rear fender skirts, polished trim, and dual exhaust outlets. It rides on 15” steel wheels with polished stainless-steel covers and older Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tires. A European-style rear license plate light has been added, and the seller notes minor paint bubbling in some areas. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather upholstery covering the front bucket seats, rear bench, and door panels. Equipment includes Jaeger instrumentation, a suspension-height control lever mounted to the left of the driver’s seat, air conditioning, power windows, and a push-button AM/FM radio. The seller notes minor tears on the door panels and seats. All gauges and electronics are reported to function properly, except for the tachometer, which is inoperative due to the electronic ignition conversion.

Power comes from a Maserati-built 2.7-liter V6 engine equipped with dual overhead camshafts and three Weber twin-choke carburetors, generating a factory-rated 180 HP and 172 lb-ft of torque. The front wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission. Mechanical features include a fully independent hydropneumatic suspension with self-leveling and adjustable ride height, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with inboard front rotors, and power-assisted DIRAVI rack-and-pinion steering. Noteworthy recent service includes a rotary-style A/C compressor conversion, full fluid replacement, carburetor rebuild, and a comprehensive service of the hydraulic systems.

This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, and a Florida registration.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a fully up-to-date serviced example with the rare 5-speed. All high-pressure hydraulics work perfectly. The A/C is cold! All accessories work perfectly, with the exception of the radio, which is not original. The paint meter shows what appears to be original. The interior is complete, but the leather has begun to show its age.”

@jibesurf I am a retired dealer (MotorcarGallery.com) who helps clients buy and sell. This car has been owned for 10 years by the current private person. The car was purchased right after restoration by David Hume. There is no real corrosion. The car runs and drives fantastic. It has recently been inspected by John Ling and he was very complimentary of the car after owning numerous SMs.

How long have you owned the car? Are you a dealer? Apart from the bubbling surface corrosion in some places, is there more rust underneath?
    Thanks

Just a quick clarification: The SMs produced in 1972 were 2.7 liter motors. They were known to have less overheating issues. The car has recently been fully serviced by long time Citroen/Maserati technician Steve Clausen. It also should be noted that it was restored in 2015 by David Hume. It has been repainted but it was a full strip of original paint. Paint meter shows this. Once again, this is a terrific driver that starts, drive and has really cold A/C and fully operating hydraulics.

PcarMARKETers, Let's go! This Citroen SM is a great driver that needs just a little bit of TLC. It starts, runs and drives perfectly. Cold A/C, Perfect Hydraulics, and runs cool. This is a great example that will be a future classic that will only go up in value when collectors realize how important this car is to the history of the automobile.
