Ferrari produced the Dino, a line of mid-engine V6 sports cars, under a separate marque from 1967 to 1974, naming it in honor of Enzo Ferrari’s late son. The original Dino 206 was introduced in 1967 and succeeded by the 246 model in 1969, which featured a longer wheelbase, an upgraded interior, and a more powerful 2.4-liter V6 engine equipped with Dinoplex ignition. This 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT was factory-finished in Rosso Chiaro over Nero leather upholstery and originally imported to the U.S. by Luigi Chinetti. The car spent time in Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Colorado before it was purchased by Suzusho Co., Ltd in 1990 and exported to Japan where it was sold to a private owner. This Dino was eventually imported back to the U.S. in 2012 and purchased by the current owner who oversaw a restoration completed over the next two years. Maintained in a climate-controlled facility as part of an esteemed private collection ever since, this numbers-matching Dino 246 GT is now being offered for auction out of Florida.
The Dino features Pininfarina-designed bodywork built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in Maranello, Italy. This Rosso Chiaro example is one of 1,431 series III (E-series) GT coupes produced between 1971 and 1974. A full body restoration was carried out in 2014, and the exterior was refinished in its original color by Xtreme Paint in Jupiter, Florida. The car features split chrome bumpers, a vented hood and rear decklid, side air intakes, a driver’s side mirror, parallel windshield wipers, quad Ansa exhaust tips, and silver five-bolt 14” Cromodora alloy wheels. Images of the restoration process and associated invoices are provided in the gallery for reference.
The interior features Nero leather covering the bucket seats, door panels, center console, and rear wall along with matching carpets and “mouse hair” upholstery on the dashboard. Accessories include a three-spoke leather steering wheel, three-point seatbelts, a gated shifter assembly, power windows, a heater, and analog Veglia Borletti instrumentation. The seller indicates the gauges were restored by North Hollywood Speedometer in 2014.
The original mid-mounted 2.4-liter Dino 65° V6 engine features dual overhead camshafts with two valves per cylinder, Magneti Marelli Dinoplex ignition, and triple two-barrel Weber carburetors. It delivers up to 195 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The car is equipped with unequal-length A-arm suspension, coilover shocks, front and rear anti-roll bars, and vacuum-assisted disc brakes at each corner. Invoices show the engine was overhauled by Rosso Corsa in 2013 including rebuilt carburetors, refurbished heads, restored valve covers, a new rear main seal, thermostat, water pump, and more. The brake calipers were also rebuilt in 2013 by PMB Performance.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This Dino has been with the Wilson Collection since 2012 and has been well taken care of. It underwent extensive restoration work and has been stored in an AC environment. It comes with a complete tool kit, spare tire, Dino Compendium, and parts diagrams.”
