1972 Jeep CJ-5 V8

Available for auction is this 1972 Jeep CJ-5 finished in metallic green over a black vinyl interior. Featuring new paint, a Rhino-lined interior with new vinyl seating, and a rebuilt 304ci V8 engine, this Jeep completed a full restoration just over 1k miles ago and is now being offered for auction by its owner out of California

The body was refinished in its current shade of metallic green under prior ownership and features black diamond plating on the rear quarter and rocker panels, sidestep bars, a full roll cage, trailer hitch, bumper-mounted fog lights, and side-exit exhaust pipes.  A new Smittybilt bikini top has been fitted along with a set of black 15” wheels dressed in 31”x10.5” Triangle All-Terrain tires from 2002.  Only a few minor stone chips are noted on the front end as well as a small chip on the driver’s side, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is equipped with front and rear seats trimmed in black vinyl. Rhino lining was applied to the floors during the restoration and a new dome light was fitted along with color-matched grab handles, an ignition cut-off switch mounted under the dashboard, a column-mounted tachometer, and a fold-down front windshield.

Power comes from an AMC 304ci V8 equipped with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. The rear or all four wheels are driven by way of a 3-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The seller reports the engine and transmission were both rebuilt during the restoration and within the last two months received a new fuel pump, filter, Optima RedTop off-road battery, air filter, and glass-pack mufflers. There has been no offroad use since the restoration.

This sale will include a car cover and a clean title.

Another note regarding the look; the hood flag, side stars and the 6 little Jeep Easter eggs are all vinyl decals and if are not your taste can be easily removed.

@newguy99 I could not agree more. A lot of old Jeeps are modified poorly or strange things have been done; I feel this one is clean and tastefully done. Sure more could be done, but it is very nice as it sits and the responce from people when driving it reflects that. Thanks for the nice comment!

I’m not in the market but have to comment to the seller how clean this Jeep is. Most of these, if they survive, are trashed. It’s nice to see a clean cruiser, sounds awesome too. Good luck bidders, be in it to win it!

@INOV8 Thanks for taking the effort and providing the RPM info. The performance certainly exceeds my 1960 CJ-5 that had a top speed of 50 MPH on the flats and 40 MPH on the Bozeman Hill if you got a good run at it!

  • INOV8 (seller) 6 days, 23 hoursago

@muddymogriffin I took it on the freeway tonight at 60mph and was running 3000rpm no problem and it runs and drives smooth at 60-65; so I ran it up to 80mph and it was running at 4000rpm and got up there quick and still felt good. I had a 94 Wrangler with a 6-cylinder and I remember it being a bit much to get it up to 70 or 80mph (felt like you were really pushing it). This thing gets up there quick and feels good at freeway speeds. Hope that helps.

That said, when I get home today I will take it for a spin and see what the actual RPM is on the freeway.

    @muddymogriffin Hi @muddymogriffin,
I have not removed the diamond plate, but per the seller who purchased it from the person who did the restoration it was always a CA car, no indication from the seller or looking over the Jeep of any rust, and based on what they did to restore it I can't imagine they would have covered up rust when doing so much to make it nice. On the RPM not sure but have drivin it on freeway at 65 and was fine

    Greetings,
What a great family project. A couple of quick questions. Anything lurking behind the black diamond plating on the rear quarter panels and the rockers? Part of a rust repair? What rpm's does it pull with the 3 speed at say 60 MPH. Thanks.

Hi Jzcarr, Yes the mounting holes are there for doors and a full top, and yes it has a heater and it works, but no AC.

  • Jzcarr (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

Also - does this have heat? Thx

  • Jzcarr (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

Does it have a hard top or could you put a hard top / doors on this ?

  • INOV8 (seller) 1 week, 5 daysago

Thanks Turbome! On an auction site like this it is always helpful to hear from someone who has seen the car in person; especially someone who knows cars and has so many nice ones. Your comment is much appreciated.

  • Turbome 1 week, 5 daysago

Seller is my neighbor across the street and every time he fires this CJ up it sounds incredible. Has to be one of the best sounding Jeeps out there. It looks just as good in person as it does in these pictures. All of the sellers cars are immaculate and the new owner will not be disappointed in the quality and condition of this Jeep. It puts my old YJ to shame in every way.

  • INOV8 (seller) 1 week, 5 daysago

Hi everyone! We are excited to offer this restored Jeep CJ5. The only reason we are selling it is I purchased it as a project to help teach my 14-year-old son a little about searching out and buying nice cars, adding some value and selling them to help get him ready for buying his first car. We did not need to do much, it was already fully restored so we just dialed it in a little more. This is the 3rd car we have done so when he turns 16 he will be ready! The Jeep needs nothing; unless you want to add off-road mods. It runs and drives excellent, is a blast to drive and it sure gets a lot of attention. It is a fun beach cruiser, great attention getter at Cars & Coffee and of courses would be a blast off-road. We look forward to your comments and questions.

Thanks for the nice comment Dom33! You nailed it; I can seem to wipe the grin off my face when I drive it.

  • Dom33 (registered bidder) 1 week, 5 daysago

This thing is Awesome!! sounds like a true hotrod/muscle car but looks like more fun to drive in my opinion.
