We are pleased to present this restored 1972 Porsche 911S Targa finished in Gold Metallic over a black leather interior.  The top-range Porsche model of its day, this 911S is one of only 989 Targa versions produced for the 1972 model year.  It was acquired by the seller in 2011 who carried out an extensive multi-year rotisserie restoration including a bare-metal respray, a fully reupholstered leather interior, a gearbox rebuild, and the installation of a new series-matching engine which was rebuilt and upgraded to European 2.7L RS-specifications.  The seller, a Porsche-trained technician, performed this restoration to a very high standard with a focus on using OEM and original parts.  With approximately 43k miles shown on the 5-digit odometer, this rare and highly collectible 911S Targa is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Texas.

During the restoration, this Targa was stripped down to bare metal and professionally refinished in its original color of Gold Metallic (88).  All rubber seals and emblems were replaced, and the original floor pans and battery boxes were retained along with much of the original brightwork which was polished and restored to a lustrous appearance.  New-old-stock parts were also sourced and fitted when possible including Hella front turn signal housings and lenses, rear taillight housings and lenses, Bosch H4 headlights, and a new windshield.  The 15” Fuchs alloys were refinished by Al Reed in CA. and currently wear Michelin XWX tires sized 185.70VR15.

The interior was completely redone by Autos International with new black leather upholstery, carpeting, door pockets, seatbelts, armrests, and a genuine Porsche dashboard.  The Targa top was refurbished and fitted with a new headliner and the gauges were sent to the specialists at West Valley Instrument in CA. to be rebuilt.  New parts include a Hirschman antenna, Fanfare horns, a radio speaker, and window cranks.  Audio is provided by a refurbished period-correct Blaupunkt radio.

Due to the failure of the original engine, a new period-correct unit was sourced and rebuilt to European 2.7 RS specifications.  The case was machined by Ollie’s of AZ. and the engine was reassembled with new Mahle Nikasil pistons and cylinders. the original crankshaft was magnafluxed, micro-polished, and balanced with all of its components in place to within 10-grams difference.  Some popular upgrades were also fitted including Carrera chain tensioners, a front-mounted oil cooler, Turbo lower valve covers, and new SSI heat exchangers and muffler.  The 5-speed 915 gearbox was then completely gone through and rebuilt with new synchros and a new aluminum pressure plate, flywheel, and clutch disc.  The rear axles were replaced along with the gas tank, fuel lines, and oil tubes.  New Koni shocks were installed in the rear as well as new Bilstein B6 inserts up front.  The suspension components were bead blasted, powder-coated, and reassembled with new bushings and bearings.  The original 911S brake calipers were rebuilt and paired with new pads, rotors, lines, a new reservoir, and a master cylinder.   Only a few thousand miles are said to have been driven since the restoration.

This sale will include a clean title.  Meticulously restored and beautifully presented while offering a tasteful upgrade in performance, this rare 911S Targa provides an excellent opportunity for any discerning Porsche enthusiast.

A new video has been added to the listing page

  • Henning (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

@Enriquesnel Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my post, I completely agree. Including the added heat, the added cost, added weight etc. it’s almost not worth putting the AC in in my opinion unless you live in Florida or Texas. Particularly in a Targa.

  • BarryLe (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Enrique: Thanks. I think this car is best driven with the Targa roof off and no A/C. Having all that extra weight over the rear wheels could compromise the car's handling. Thanks for doing the research.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@BarryLe I just talk to Griffiths and Carly tells me that it takes @30 hrs to install the A/C system, he tells me that the new radial compressors do not take as much power off the engine as the old york ones and the system can be @$5,000.00. because it will take 3 condensers to get cold air into the car.

  • FranckGV (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

@Enriquesnel Perfect ! Could you put me in touch with this person ? My email : franckgv @ free.fr

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@Henning We can chat all day about this subject, to me the problem is not electric, the problem is one more pulley and the heat that you are pulling into an engine bay that you are trying to keep cold for the engine to cool down, the condenser above the grill gets hot, correct?? so is up to what you want to have......thank you.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@FranckGV Bon Jour Franck, thank you for your interest and reaching out, absolutely, I'm with pleasure able to assist with Exportation to France and I have an Agent in France who is able to handle the complete Importation and Delivery to your door, bid with confidence.

  • FranckGV (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Hello, I am French, living in France. Your car interests me and I want to bid but I want to know if you agree to export it to France ? I will obviously pay the export costs

  • Henning (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

@Enriquesnel that makes sense. Thank you for clarifying. To some of the questions regarding the AC system. Unless you go with an eletric AC system running off of an upgraded alternator, you will drain some hp from the engine to power the AC system. I’d question why you would care though as the AC system in itself weighs a decent amount.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@BarryLe @BarryLe, Let me talk to Carly Griffiths tomorrow and I will let you know. I have used the Griffiths System in several 911's but all had been Carreras and they are very different cars.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@rhmoritz The miles on the odometer very well could be the original miles, I really don't know for sure, for the wear and tear of the car when I bought it, I can say that it maybe the original miles.
I'm waiting for PCAR to post the videos, thank you

  • BarryLe (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Enrique: Will that Griffith A/C system that you are recommending work well in your Targa? Will it drain a lot of power from the engine? Thanks.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@gshibayama That is the way to go, I'm waiting for the videos to be posted.......
I like that Petaluma Rd video, than you.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@BarryLe Hi Barry, I think that Griffiths is the best and will cost @5,000.00 installed.
I called Autos International in California and they can do the rear seats for @1,000.00. Thank you.

  • gshibayama (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Gorgeous color!!! Any driving video? I had 1972 911S Targa with RS spec motor. It run amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsWiKuNqKQo

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@rhmoritz When I bought the car, I just checked the body for rust and accidents, it was the 911S that I wanted, so I never asked any questions, I pay for it and took her home.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@Henning In 1972 NHTSA wanted more square inches for the rear view mirror, so the US model came with the flag style, the European models used the round one, so I decided to go European, I think it looks a lot better!! Thank you for your question.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@mlane958 Yesss, the whole Targa Aluminum cover it's been buffed to Original Condition, will you like to see some pics?? Thank you for your interest.

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

    @wbcor Hi Bill,
The A/C was removed before I got the car and I was happy about it, those old York compressors never could move enough cold air for the A/C to work properly and took a lot of power from this engines, you probably know that this cars were not meant to have A/C.
All the Glass around the car is original to the car Tinted Sekurit-F, the rear glass is Sekurit F1, the windshield is not original to the car and is New Tinted Pilkington.
    We used Glasurit Paint.

Thank you for your interest and good wishes.

    Best,

    Enrique

  • Henning (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Very nice Restauration job @enriquesnel. Small item but out of curiosity, why did you opt to go with the earlier year side mirror versus the period correct flag shaped one?

    Friggen YUMMY !

  • mlane958 (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

    Enriquesnel,
Do you know if the scratches located near 'targa' logo on passenger side of car be polished or buffed out? Thanks.

  • BarryLe (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Enrique: I live in South Florida and A/C in the Targa would be a big plus for me. Can you tell me what would be involved in reinstalling A/C in this car and the approximate cost? Also, I love what you did with the front seats. What would it cost to do the rear seats to match? Thanks, Barry

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Do you have any history on the car prior to acquiring it 10 years ago? Original place of purchase? Number of owners? Approximate total miles on chassis? Can you provide a brief start-up and driving video?
    Thanks.

  • wbcor (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

    Hi Enrique.
Beautiful 911. Can you comment on a few items?
Probably you know that E03 is factory air and tinted windows. Do you know what became of the a/c and how many of the windows are factory original?

What brand of paint was used?

    Thanks and good luck.

    Regards,
    Bill

    @BarryLe @BarryLe. Hi Barry,
Any of the 3rd party subcontractor work aka upholstery, etc. I can provide invoices for, however, I own a Company, Euroexport Internacional and all the labor and parts where sourced through here. I do it as a hobby and never tracked my time to the restoration. What exactly are you looking for and I can give it a shot of putting it together, I look forward to hearing from you. Best, Enrique.

@dno76 I do not have a Gauge, I'm getting one tomorrow, I will let you know the readings, thank you for looking.

@sthein i am local and am interested in your sport seats. How can I contact you?

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@Mr.S As I stated before the car it is not a matching numbers car, the engine that the car has, was manufactured exactly 80 engines apart from the original, thank you for looking

  • Enriquesnel (seller) 3 yearsago

@mlane958 I do not have any data to show how many HP this engine is producing, all I can tell you is that the Mechanical Fuel Injection Pump was upgraded with a new cam to be exactly as the 2.7RS, I also installed new Fuel Injectors, it revs very easily to 7,200 RPM's and the car is very fast.......thank you for looking.
