This 1972 Porsche 911S Coupe comes finished in Light Ivory over a Black leatherette interior with Sport Seats and is accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity along with several high-scoring concours judging sheets. Sold to its second owner in Michigan, this 911S made its way into the hands of the famed restorer, Mark Allin of Rare Drive Inc., in 2007. Extensively reconditioned throughout the next 5 years and kept as part of a private collection by the current owner in a climate-controlled environment since 2014, this numbers-matching 911S is now being offered for auction out of Illinois.

The Light Ivory exterior is said to have been previously refinished and includes a driver’s side chrome mirror, chrome lower rocker trim, a 911S front spoiler, chrome horn grilles, and a 1972-exclusive external oil filler door on the passenger-side rear fender. Chrome horizontal bars connecting the rear bumperettes are also fitted. The 15” Fuchs wheels are mounted with Michelin XWX tires with dates ranging from 3 years old at the front to 9 years old at the rear. The seller states this example was used in 4 PCA tours under their ownership and some very minor cosmetic imperfections are present.

The interior of this 911 is upholstered in Black vinyl with matching door panels, grey carpeting, and an off-white headliner. The Sport Seats show minor signs of wear and the seller notes a ½” crack on the dash pad along with some minor separation. The driver’s side overhead light does not illuminate, while all other accessories are said to be working properly.

The 2.4-liter Type 911/53 flat-six features mechanical fuel injection and was factory rated at 190 HP and 158 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Type 915 five-speed manual transaxle. The seller notes sport suspension is equipped and the drivetrain case stampings match those shown on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a tool kit, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

@garrege I had the choke on That was me doing a throttle blip this car has never backfired

  • garrege 1 year, 1 monthago

The "back-fire" noise and corresponding RPM jump seems to be TOO rapid to be a manually induced throttle blip. The flywheel isn't that light ; )

  • garrege 1 year, 1 monthago

@FawsittMotors, that is not the original steering wheel. The hockey puck horn button is from an earlier car but it's a very popular mod. The original horn button should be the bat wings.

It's hard for to say if the wheel is 400mm or 380mm; 400mm would be original. The 380mm wheel was offered on the RS and 914's. Again, it's very popular mod to go with the 380mm wheel.

  • WReiter (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@garrege it sounds much more like a throttle blip than a backfire, no?

  • garrege 1 year, 1 monthago

...it's at the 1:18 mark of the video.

  • garrege 1 year, 1 monthago

In the cold start video, towards the end, does the car back-fire? The tachometer jumps at the exact same time.

This is a very solid 911S that was owned by a very good friend of mine, prior to the current owner taking possession. Mark Allin knows good a Porsche and bought it for himself. Only sold to expand the Rare Drive shop, no other reason.

Has given current owner zero problems

    Buy with confidence

  • pilot83 1 year, 1 monthago

@twickes40 I agree the resto was a good number of years back. Still should be mid 200s. Doesn't sound like the owner drove it much over that time frame and still looks great.

  • pilot83 1 year, 1 monthago

I would have expected the bid to be in the 200s by now.

For those of you paying attention, Mark Allin of Rare Drive is the restorer of the Le Mans winning GT40 P/1046 and the Prototype Ferrari 250 Cal Spider SWB, not to mention countless other next level cars.

This truly represents an opportunity to own a car restored by the personification of the word perfectionist. My only regret is that I am not in a position were I am able to bid. Congrats to the future new owner!!!!

@yippkia410, How about posting bottom pics of the all-important one-year only front oil cooler? Thanks.

  • twickes40 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@yippkia410 thanks for the videos. The car sounds great. Can you comment on photo 25. On the drivers lower fender I see what looks to be water drops or paint bubbling? Can you please inspect and confirm?

@opener Hi,the car is a radio delete there is no speaker under the speaker cover on the dash.
I’ll be back in the shop tomorrow and lift the car to photo both sides of the heat exchanger.
I did notice that that one was missing I’ve driven the car in cooler weather and the heat and defrost do warm it up.

  • yippkia410 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

    @Lexday47 Hi,
The poa in the pictures is all I received with the car

  • opener (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Nice ‘72S. I see the hose from the heat exchanger to the heater control box is missing in photo 164. Is this the same on the passenger side? Are the control boxes present and functioning?
Did the car once have a radio?
