This 1972 Porsche 911S Targa was purchased by its builder in 2000 and subsequently treated to a custom bare metal restoration over the next several years. Finished in Cobalt Blue Metallic over black leather, this Targa received metal fender flares, RS-style bumpers, upgraded Carrera brakes, performance suspension, and an RS-spec 2.7L engine paired with a regeared 5-speed manual transmission. Restored to as-new standards with less than 3k miles on the chassis and under 1k miles on the drivetrain, this uncompromising 911S Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Alabama.

This 911S was stripped to bare metal and fitted with steel 911SC fender flares along with RS-style bumpers and a ducktail rear spoiler. The body received sealing primer before being finished in the Porsche color of Cobalt Blue Metallic (L37U) by professional painter Darrell Watson. All nuts, bolts, and hardware were blasted and CAD plated while the battery boxes were removed for improved oil cooling (boxes included in sale). A new OEM windshield was fitted along with new chrome trim, Bosch headlights, turn signal lenses, and painted 16” Fuchs wheels measuring 7” wide in front and 8” wide in the rear.

Inside, the cabin has been fitted with new German carpeting, RS door panels, and a set of perforated black leather RS seats from GTS Classics mounted on Recaro sliders. Other additions include Lloyd’s “911S” carpet mats, a three-spoke Personal Fitti steering wheel, and an aftermarket stereo paired with 6”x9” speakers.

Power comes from a Type 911/53 motor sourced from another 1972 911S, which was overhauled and rebuilt to 2.7L specifications including new 9.5:1 JE coated skirt pistons, 2.7 cylinders, rebuilt MFI heads, Dougherty Racing Mod S cams, and PMO 40mm carburetors. This engine also features new SSI heat exchangers, a Dansk sport muffler, and Carrera 3.2 chain tensioners, hardware, oil pump, and fuel pump. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt 5-speed 915 manual transmission with a factory short shifter and new bushings. It was completely rebuilt under prior ownership and modified with a shorter 911SC 5th gear ratio.

Stopping power is derived from rebuilt and CAD-plated Carrera brake calipers paired with new 24mm Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors, braided hoses, and a Tilton three-way rear bias adjuster.  The front suspension includes an aluminum Carrera cross member, poly bushings, Turbo tie rods, Bilstein struts, a modified steering arm, and a 19mm Weltmeister sway bar with double adjustable end links. In the rear, the car features aluminum Carrera trailing arms, adjustable spring plates, Elephant Racing poly/brass bushings, Bilstein shocks, and another 19mm Weltmeister sway bar with double adjustable end links.

This sale will include the original battery boxes, original 5th gear, books, toolkit, records, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, roll bar, front bra, and an Alabama registration.

    Simply breathtaking.

New video content has been added to the listing page.

@Wmkevin7 I uploaded the requested cold start and driving videos to Pcar admin, they should be available on the listing shortly, along with additional walk-around and engine videos in outside lighting. I'm traveling today, yet returning this evening; will be happy to meet you -- please contact me directly.

Would it be possible to test drive today? I’m in Nashville TN and would be glad to drive down and test drive? I work M-F so the auction would be over before I have another chance…..

  • ehd911 (seller) 2 years, 6 monthsago

@Wmkevin7 Yes; the heat works as intended. Correct; it had factory AC, yet most who desire better AC are going to the Classic Retrofit electric AC system -- the installed 95amp 3.2 alternator will help facilitate such.

  • Wmkevin7 (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

It looks to have heat does it work well? I assume no air, correct?

  • ehd911 (seller) 2 years, 6 monthsago

@Wmkevin7 Note that the video that Pcar has on the main page of the listing is a "cold-start" walk-around video shot from inside our Porsche collection facility; I've asked Pcar to add additional outside lighting videos -- I'll get the driving video today (weather permitting).

Note that it has a new MSD/Mallory multiple spark discharge CD box and new MSD Blaster coil with new 8 mm high performance wires. The distributor is stock S with points for reliability. With the CD the points don’t wear out. Also note that the alternator is 95 amp single wire 3.2. Housing is 3.2 with 72 fan, thus plenty of power. Every bushing, bearing and moving part has been replaced or rebuilt. All of this work improves reliability.

Absolutely gorgeous! This should result with a giddy buyer and a content seller. Wish it was I bidding… GLWA!

A few points omitted from the write-up:

    - The transmission has 911SC 2-5 gears to create a short ratio transmission that greatly improves acceleration.

    - The stock 5th gear is included, if desired -- yet the installed 5th only increases rpm 300 at cruise.

    - The engine is fully set up if a return to MFI, if desired.

    - New factory dash was installed during the restoration.

    - RSR front cross strut was installed during the restoration.

    - RS torsion bar and sway bar reinforcements were installed during the restoration.

@Wmkevin7 Thank you! Yes; it's absolutely reliable. It's extensive restoration was recently completed -- there are no cold-start concerns on it's recently rebuilt engine, yet I'll get the requested videos uploaded today (weather permitting).

Beautiful car. Can you add a video for a cold start and driving the car? And is it a reliable car where you could take long drives without the worry of breakdown?
