Up next at auction is this 1972 Porsche 914, which was converted into a race car eligible for competition in the GT-4S class of the Porsche Club of America. It was built for racing by DeMan Motorsport of Blauvelt, New York, at a total cost of $90k, equipped with a 3.0L 911SC engine with 46mm Weber carburetors, a 901 transmission with a close-ratio custom gearstack, 911SC front suspension, 911 SC brakes, a Patrick Motorsports fuel cell, boxed rear control arms, fiberglass bodywork, a stripped race-prepped interior with a paint-matching full roll cage, Turini fire suppression system, a FIA Sparco Ultra race seat with a G-Force 6-point harness, and much more. Having recently received a full inspection and track shakedown test by A&R Autowerks of Beuford, South Carolina, this 914-6 is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of Florida.

This example is finished in the rare shade of non-metallic Willow Green (L63K) and has been fitted with a fiberglass front bonnet, decklid, bumpers, and fender flares. The windows have been removed and just the windshield remains. The seller notes this 914 was likely resprayed when the bodywork was installed, and describes the paint to remain in good condition, noting some paint chips on the door edges, a blemish on the front bumper, some rub wear on the roll cage from opening the engine compartment, and some paint missing on the rear storage compartment, likely from engine heat. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. Exterior equipment includes a black front air dam, hood securing pins, removable vinyl numbers, a muffled megaphone exhaust with black cookie-cutter tips, and an exterior battery kill switch and fire extinguisher pull handle. This 914 rides on 17” Porsche 964 Turbo-style wheels, which are mounted with Toyo RA1 tires showing date codes from 2020.

The interior has been fully prepared for racing, stripped out and fitted with a FIA Sparco Ultra race seat with a G-Force 6-point racing harness, an aluminum pedalboard, a Turini fire extinguisher system, a professionally welded paint-matching full roll cage with roll bar padding on the driver’s side, a Sparco Competition Series steering wheel, a wink mirror, a window net, and individual switches for battery, fuel, ignition, transmission pump, and starter. The instrument cluster retains the original 914 configuration, but uses a 911SC tachometer, 911SC oil pressure gauge, and 911 SC temperature gauge. Due to the lack of an odometer, the true mileage is unknown. The seller reports the cabin to be in great condition, with low wear on the raw paint and no tears in the racing seat.

The original engine has been replaced with a 3.0L flat-six derived from a 911SC, with 46mm Weber carburetors, ARP hardware, Patrick Motorsports 914-6 exhaust headers,  and an Electromotive HPV-1 Direct Injection System. The rear wheels are driven by a 5-speed 901 manual transmission with a close-ratio gearstack and a rear limited-slip differential. The front suspension is derived from a 911SC, the rear control arms have been boxed, and 911SC brakes with stainless steel lines have been installed at all four corners. Other performance features include a Patrick Motorsports fuel cell, a Holley Blue electric fuel pump, an Astrolite battery, Bilstein shocks, and an upgraded master cylinder. The seller reports this 914 to weigh less than 2000 pounds. Recent service in January of 2022 consisted of new tires, an oil and filter change, a valve adjustment, new upper and lower valve cover gaskets, a new sump plate gasket, and an on-track shakedown test at Roebling Road Raceway.

This sale will include a clean title and some service documentation.

@Bruce914 If it were me I’d get a Dansk Muffler, likely under the bumper lights, and a passenger seat. It’s nice to be able to have the option to go blast around some back roads or drive to a show occasionally.

Love this car - I have a 71 4 cylinder in willow green. I keep looking at this trying to see how hard it would be to make it a street car.

@uscarrera Good afternoon, you should be able to fit fine. When it was shaken down the driver was just 5’11 and didn’t have any clearance issues. I will throw on my helmet and get you some exact clearances. Thank you.

  • uscarrera (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Any idea if a 6’2” driver with helmet can fit in the cockpit?
    Thanks

  • Powersmotorsports (seller) 2 yearsago

@Phardie1 Hello, this is a very clean 914. Floors look to be original and did not see any areas of concern when it was on the lift. Underneath is not perfect of course from being tracked but no signs of damage, repairs, or anything past minor surface rust. Based on the condition and lack of windows this car has spent most of its time indoors. Thank you.

@Alfa_Omega_Man Since the VIN starts with 472 this was originally a 914-4. Thank you.

  • Alfa_Omega_Man (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Is this an original 914-6 tub or was it a 914-4 prior to being turned in to a race car? I didn't see this listed anywhere. Thanks

  • Powersmotorsports (seller) 2 yearsago

@racerx44 The invoice for the recent work has been added to the gallery. Completely gone through by a Porsche Race Shop and taken to RRR for an on track shakedown. Performed well and proved itself. The car is located in my showroom in FL. The car was last ran on the track less than a month ago. Thank you.

So the car has been sorted out and on the track? How long has it sat while in current ownership? Is the car in Florida or SC?

  • Powersmotorsports (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@pm2207 Hello, they are in fact fiberglass and paint matched extremely well. In the event they need to be replaced I believe these flares are sold by "Patrick Motorsports". Lots of options to attach flares, they are very well secured and not as noticeable in person. Thank you.

  • Powersmotorsports (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@Quackbury Good evening, the log book did not come with the car unfortunately. I will see what I can do but no luck so far. I believe Andrew of A & R Autowerks in Beaufort, SC said it can run 1:25 consistently but was not on the stickiest tires so may have left some time out there. A cold start video and some clips of it running will be added. It is certainly loud so a muffler may need to be added if required. Thank you.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    Nice car.

The riveted flares are interesting. If damaged in a race it would be easier to replace.

Are they fiberglass? Where do you get replacements if damaged?

  • Quackbury (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

@Quackbury #noise level. Not sure why I can't edit comments on this site - fat fingers and small keyboard are a deadly combination.

  • Quackbury (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

Drool worthy. Does it have a logbook and any race history? Any spares come with the car? Set up notes from Roebling Road? Lap times?

I'm curious why the tach was rotated clockwise, as I am accustomed to just the opposite.

Finally I am going to boycott this site - and your auction - until you add a video. The sound of that unmuffled air-cooled six with the Webers must be obscene. (In fact, loise level readings would be helpful; probably could not run this at Lime Rock in its current state).

  • Powersmotorsports (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

Hello everyone, we are excited to offer this 914 to you all for auction. This is a sweet car that has just been shaken down, and a very solid racecar with the option to bring back to street legal and tear up your town. Reach out for any questions. Good luck bidding. Thank you.
