Available for auction is this 1973 Porsche 914 finished in Signal Orange over a black leatherette interior. This 1973 example was acquired by the seller in 2016 to be used in Porsche Club of America autocross and DE events. It has been equipped with a 901/02 air-cooled flat-six engine paired with a 914/12 “side-shift” 5-speed manual transaxle, as well as a 911 steering rack, Koni adjustable shocks, and more. This flat-six powered 914 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Georgia.

This 914 comes finished in Signal Orange with black vinyl sail panels and a removable Targa top. The seller notes that the car was completely refinished and had its driver-side fender and inner fender replaced while under previous ownership. Details include a single-side polished side-view mirror, pop-up headlights, chrome bumpers, quad-exhaust finishers, and a set of 16” Fuchs-style wheels dressed in Dunlop Direzza ZII tires from 2016.

The Black leatherette interior features basketweave pattern inserts on the seats, dashboard, and door panels, along with new black carpets. Details include a three-spoke leather-wrapped Momo steering wheel, a Bluetooth amplifier, Coco floor mats, dashboard-mounted auxiliary oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges, hand-crank windows, VDO instrumentation, and an integrated USB port.

Power comes from a 901/02 air-cooled flat-six cylinder engine sourced from a 1967 911S. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 914/12 “side-shift” 5-speed manual transaxle. A 911 steering rack has been added in addition to Koni adjustable shock absorbers. The seller reports that the engine and transmission were rebuilt in 2016 by Franz Blam Racing of Tucker, Georgia and that the chassis was tuned up by Gold Crest Motorsports of Kennesaw, Georgia. Service is said to include regular oil and filter changes as well as routine valve adjustments.

This sale will include a clean title.

Typical oil leaks for a air cooled Porsche

  • Jarod964 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Daryle thank you. As it sits, any mechanical needs? Oil leaking?

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Jarod964 Original color signal orange, left fender was replaced from a red car prior to my ownership as stated in auction description. Car was checked for body alignment by Goldcrest Motorsports and is true and straight - photo and report included in auction description

  • Jarod964 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Was the car originally red, or red at some point during its life? Noticing the red hiding under the paint chips in a couple photos - want to confirm the original colour was in fact signal orange? Thanks

As the owner of a '70 914-6 with a 2.7, I can tell you someone is going to get a great driver -- sure smile every time. Worth it, in my opinion

@Johnwestt All gauges and lights work as designed

No coolant- not sure why that is in the description.

    Note: I added a factory 914-6 multi-gage

  • Johnwestt (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Are all the gauges functional with lights working? And why does the description refer to a coolant gauge; when this is an air cooled engine?

@johnsquires The additional tube frame in front was installed prior to my ownership. I installed a set of Patrick Motorsports modifies rear trailing arms. No other stiffening plates have been added.

  • johnsquires 1 year, 2 monthsago

I note the front trunk stiffening bars, but can you comment on any other stiffening material that was added to the car for the six conversions?

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@edgy4sure First generation 914 had what is known as Tail Shift - while functional needed improvement so in 73 they delivered the side shift improving the shift quality.

This 914 has the side shift- best of the generation.

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    @Bruce914 Hi Bruce

Will try to get a few before auction ends

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Solid looking car - any driving videos?

  • edgy4sure (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

never heard about "side shift" tranny - can you advise please?

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@Dwhite Pic 107 - view of the back of passenger side rear quarter - looking at door lock mount.
Pic 106 - view of oil tank driver side

  • Dwhite (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Pic 107 not totally familiar with area. Where is this location?

It looks like an inner fenderwell meeting body panel, but I'm not sure.

  • twickes40 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Beautiful car. How many track days/miles are on the engine and trans?

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@JuniorVarsity I installed a Kenwood Bluetooth amp under the dash to power the footwell speakers.

The red box you see in the rear trunk is the MSD Ignition for the engine.

  • JuniorVarsity (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Looks like there's an amp (pic 84); is there a stereo? What is the red unit that looks like an amp against the trunk firewall in pic 62? Thanks!

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@Seasmoke Hello - Yes, it has remained street legal, all lights and horn are in great working order.
Current registration in Georgia . PMO carburetors are jetted a little rich for daily in-town street traffic.

  • Seasmoke (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Is the 914 street legal? Does it have a current registration.

  • FMatt356 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

I know the seller of this car as I had the privilege of selling a car he built that a friend had bought a couple of years before. The car was literally one of the nicest engineered 356 restomods on the planet. It ended up going to Australia and the buyer cherishes it.

If Daryle has had this car it has got to be one of the nicest running 914s around.. period. He does almost all of the work himself and is a total gear-head engineer and he will be part of the experience for as long as you own the car. You could not buy an automobile from a nicer more informed mechanical genius anywhere. Whoever wins this car will win the lottery.

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@maj75 Yes, both were built by Franz Blam as stated in the description - receipts included with sale.

Have the motor or transmission been refurbished?

  • maj75 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

This is what I envisioned my ‘71 Signal Orange 914 project would be. Beautiful!

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@opener I have never look at the wheel casting marks, they were with the car when I purchased in 2016

No photos without panels, but they are in great condition-no rust at all from viewing in the gap with flashlight- camera just can not focus well in that area.

  • opener (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Are the wheels Fuchs or replicas? The description states Fuchs style wheels. Any photos of the longitudinals with the rocker panels removed?

  • Daryle (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    Hello Team PCAR Market

Time to let my 914-6 conversion go to another garage. I have enjoyed driving "Orange Crush" as I have nicknamed at DE and Autocross events. I will respond to questions as quickly as I can while traveling for business most of next week.

    Thanks - Daryle
