Up for auction is this 1973 Porsche 914-6 race car finished in a Porsche 917K Salzburg-style livery. Built by a veteran racer boasting over thirty years of track-going experience with Porsche 914s, this 1973 example was purchased as a stock 914-4 tub about twenty-one years ago and has since been modified for use in PCA GT3-class and NASA GTS class-5 racing.  It has been fitted with removable GT2-style fiberglass bodywork, a full racing cockpit, roll cage, a custom suspension with JRZ adjustable coilovers, 930-derived brakes, and a G50 5-speed manual gearbox with a Guard limited-slip differential and side-shift conversion.  Power comes from a turbocharged twin-plug 2.0L flat-six engine capable of producing over 470 HP at 23 psi of boost.  Having recently been brought out of storage after a number of years, this highly competitive 914-6 racer has been freshly serviced and is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Florida.

The seam-welded chassis is clad in lightweight fiberglass GT2-style bodywork featuring a custom red and white “Salzburg” livery in the style of the iconic 1970 Le Mans-winning #23 Porsche 917K.  The welds on this 914 were carried out by a highly skilled nuclear-certified welder who had formerly worked for Bob Garretson’s racing team.  An adjustable chassis-mounted spoiler has been fitted in the rear along with a carbon-fiber splitter up front.  The ducted front hood and rear deck are secured with pins and the rear panel has been drilled out to provide better ventilation to the intercooler.  This 914-6 rides on a set of genuine 16” BBS wheels measuring 10” wide in the front and 11” wide rear.  An additional set of matching wheels will accompany the sale and the tires are recommended for replacement prior to track use.

Inside, you will find a purpose-built racing cockpit fitted with a full roll cage, door bars, and a fixed Recaro HANS bucket seat.  Other safety features include a Schroth harness, a Lifeline fire suppression system, and a 20-gallon Fuel Safe.  The driver is situated in front of a custom carbon-fiber instrument panel and a three-spoke Personal steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara.  Some of the instrumentation includes a 9k-RPM AutoMeter tachometer and an AEM digital boost gauge.  The driver is also supplied with a top-mounted Tilton pedal assembly and brake-bias adjuster.  The seller notes that the fuel cell has been recently inspected and found to be in good condition. An additional feature is the front mounted transmission cooler which significantly lowers transmission operating temperatures and extends the gearbox life.

Based on a 1968 sand-cast aluminum case, the 911-sourced 2.0L flat-six engine has been rebuilt and upgraded with a twin-plug ignition system, Biral cylinders, 9:1 Pauter pistons, Carrillo rods, and a Garrett hybrid T4/T5 turbocharger.  Other features include a camshaft-driven turbo scavenge pump, dual Bosch 044 fuel pumps, a Porsche 930 oil pump, a Billy Boat 930 oil cooler, new battery, and a Carrera 3.2 intake plenum with 55-lb. Siemens fuel injectors.  Dyno sheets for this engine show outputs ranging from 392 HP and 312 lb.-ft of torque at 15 psi of boost, and up to 473 HP and 382 lb.-ft of torque at 23 psi of boost to the rear wheels.

The rear wheels are driven through an inverted G50 5-speed manual gearbox paired with a Guard limited-slip differential and California Motorsports side-shift conversion.  Other details include a custom flywheel, 7.25” clutch discs, 300M half-shafts, and Porsche 930-spec CV joints.  JRZ three-way adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs have been equipped and the Heim-joint ERP front lightweight suspension features adjustable control arms and fully adjustable camber boxes.  Stopping power comes from Porsche 930-derived disc brakes with full-floating front rotors. Recent service carried out in preparation for sale includes fuel injector cleaning, new spark plugs, and an oil change.  The seller recommends updating the older engine management system and suggests refilling the shock absorbers prior to track use.

This 914-6 will be accompanied by a bill of sale, instruction manuals for the various components, some invoices, and an extra set of matching BBS wheels.  A monster of a 914, this turbocharged twin-plug racer is a perfect choice for any avid track-going enthusiast.
