The Bricklin SV-1 was introduced in 1974 as a “safety vehicle”, equipped with a steel chassis, a tubular steel cage, an integral roll bar, and impact bumpers. It also used hydraulically controlled gullwing doors, color-infused acrylic resin bodywork, and a 360ci AMC V8 producing 220 HP and 315 lb.-ft of torque. Said to be 772 SV-1s produced for the 1974 model year, this example is finished in Safety Orange over a Phoenix Brown leather interior, and was said to have sat for 40 years in dry storage before being acquired by the current owner. Having recently received a new hydraulic pump for the operation of the gull-wing doors, this 1974 Bricklin SV-1 is now being offered at auction by the seller out of Colorado showing just over 4k miles on the odometer.
The SV-1 uses color-infused acrylic resin-infused body panels over a steel chassis, which are colored in Safety Orange. Equipment includes pop-up headlights, gull-wing doors, impact bumpers, and textured black lower body panels. The seller reports some surface rust was observed on the undercarriage and was treated with Ospho and then a converter to remove it, and a thorough inspection revealed no corrosion beyond that. The seller also notes some fading of the acrylic bodywork from the front to rear, the rear decklid plastic has deformed and is slightly misaligned, and some stress cracks and blemishes are visible throughout the bodywork. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. The 15” turbine-style wheels are mounted with Sumitomo HTR 200 tires with unknown date codes.
The interior is trimmed in Pheonix Brown leather with button-tufted seat inserts, a two-tone dashboard, and a matching center console and door panels. Amenities include an upholstered headliner, roll-up windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and matching shift knob, VDO instrumentation, air-conditioning, and an AM/FM radio.
The Bricklin SV-1 is equipped with a 360ci AMC V8 engine with a single four-barrel rebuilt carburetor which produced up to 220 HP and 315 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by a 3-speed Torque Command automatic transmission, allowing for acceleration from 0-60 MPH in under 10 seconds with a top speed of 111 MPH. Performance features include power-assisted disc brakes and drums in the rear, an integrated roll bar and steel cage, an A-arm front suspension with coil springs, and a rear Hotchkiss system of leaf springs with a live rear axle.
