A classic British sports car, the MGB replaced the renowned MGA in 1963 and had a successful production run until 1980. As a 1974 example, this MG MGB Roadster was originally produced by the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland and subsequently underwent a full restoration in the mid-2010s. Finished in bronze with a distinctive gold accent over a saddle leather interior, it features a 4-speed manual transmission paired with its 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. Reported to have been stored in a climate-controlled environment and driven less than 1k miles over the last seven years, this MGB Roadster is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

This fully restored MGB Roadster has been refinished in bronze with a distinguishing gold accent that runs across its lower side profile and features a Union Jack emblem. Details include a manually operated black convertible soft top, a polished grille with a black honeycomb insert, chrome bumpers, chrome pinstripes that run from the headlights to the taillights, and a single exhaust outlet. It rides on 14″ alloy wheels dressed in Yokohama tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The interior has been redone with saddle leatherette upholstery which covers the seats, door panels, rear center console, and shifter boot. It is accented by tan carpeting with “MG” embroideries, a black dashboard, and wood trim on the 3-spoke steering wheel and shifter surround. Other features include driver and passenger lap belts, roll-up windows, and a lockable glove box. All gauges and accessories are reported to be working properly.

This MGB is equipped with a rebuilt 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with upgraded modern gaskets. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission. Additionally, the suspension has been upgraded for improved handling and the brakes have been upgraded to discs at each corner. The seller states that there are currently no outstanding maintenance items.

This sale will include a clean title and tool kit.

@200mph I appreciate your expertise on the MGB. Hopeful it will do well 🙂 have a great day!

  • 200mph (registered bidder) 5 months, 3 weeksago

There were three 1974 MGBs. The earliest cars were the same as the '73's. The next batch had huge "Sabrina" rubber bumper blocks on chrome bumpers. Then, "1974 1/2" models (yes, that was an official model year designation), got rubber bumpers, raised ride height, etc. With this car's DMV assigned VIN, its not possible to tell which this car started out as.

Seller's link to the restorer's website clears that up. This is a "1974 1/2". The chrome bumper conversion, aluminum cylinder head and Weber carb are worthwhile improvements and should add value. GLWTA!

@Marklkohn I'm assuming because the 74 would have been a rubber bumper car but this one was converted back to chrome bumpers which may cause some confusion as to the VIN number

This car was restored by www.MGBclassics.com. If you go to the roadsters drop down you can see it.
1974.5 MGB was converted to earlier 73-74 style chrome bumpers. The exterior was designed to look like the very rare 1980 European limited edition MGB with its unique Bronze Metalic paint job and gold limited edition decals. Also the wood steering wheel. It has Autumn leaf interior with matching carpet. It has a32.36 downdraft Webber, Aluminum heads, chrome windshield and stainless steel header sport exhaust system. A visit to the restorers website will let you see the hard work and craftsmanship that went into this MGB.

What is the comment about the VIN # about?

  • Peabo (registered bidder) 5 months, 4 weeksago

Please explain the upgrades to suspension for improved handling. Also, this does not have Discs at each corner. Rears are drum.

"Additionally, the suspension has been upgraded for improved handling and the brakes have been upgraded to discs at each corner."

  • Power93 (registered bidder) 6 monthsago

@200mph thanks for the reply I was thinking that's what you were referring to however, I wanted to make sure I was not overlooking something. My Dads old MGB had these same type of issues.

  • 200mph (registered bidder) 6 monthsago

@Power93 In the main photo above, the bumper is tilted up, and the ends are turned down. They should be level. The chrome bumper is light steel, while the bars backing it and attaching it are heavy spring steel. A mechanic can fix this, likely by removing, heating and bending the bumper brackets back into the proper alignment.

  • Power93 (registered bidder) 6 monthsago

@200mph what do you mean by tweaked front bumper?

LOVE the non-stock color, and that the restorer did a complete color change to the unitbody instead of just rattlecanning the engine bay and trunk in black.

However, the assigned VIN, dizzying front ride height, and tweaked front bumper give pause. Hope the seller weighs in on these issues, gives some background, offers some underbody and suspension shots, tire date codes and a driving video to maximize his efforts here. GLWTA!
