The 1974 model year saw the most significant evolution of the Porsche 911 yet with the introduction of new G-Series bodywork along with fuel-injected 2.7-liter flat-six engines across the model range. This 1974 Porsche 911 Targa came factory-finished in Orange and features upgraded Turbo valve covers, oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners, 911S front brake calipers, front and rear sway bars, 15” Fuchs alloy wheels, and a 5-speed manual transaxle. Having been cared for by the same owner since 1988, this 911 Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Maine.
This 911 was factory finished in Orange (156) a traditional Porsche color that was first offered on the 356 model in 1957. It features a removable black roof panel, a brushed silver Targa bar, a heated rear window, a fender-mounted antenna, polished window moldings, chrome door handles, and silver 15” Fuchs alloy wheels. The car rides on Pirelli P6 tires showing production date codes from 2011 and 2012. The seller indicates the car was refinished in 2013 and some scratches are present on the right front and rear corners as well as pitting on the front valence and bumper and a rust spot on the left door jamb near the striker plate. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin features black leatherette upholstery with matching carpets and basketweave pattern seat centers. Accessories include carpet floor mats, manual window cranks, a heater and fan, a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, factory rear seatbelts, intermittent windshield wipers, aftermarket Jensen speakers, and a Pioneer stereo. The seller notes a small crack on the dashboard near the defroster vent on the right side and that the upholstery on the sun visors is sagging. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional.
The air-cooled 2.7-liter flat-six engine is equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and was originally rated at 150 HP. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that the engine was rebuilt approximately 40k miles ago and has been upgraded with Turbo lower valve covers and oil-fed Carrera chain tensioners. The car also features aluminum alloy 911S front brake calipers and sway bars at the front and rear. An oil change was recently performed, and the seller adds that limited service records are available as the car has been driven sparingly over the past 15 years.
This sale will include original owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, some records, and a clean title.

We have no records of a transmission rebuild. However the transmission shifts fine with no grinding on up or down shifts even into first and second gears. As mentioned, all of the service records were inadvertently discarded when the owner retired and he was cleaning out old business records. We have reached out to the shop that rebuilt the engine but as yet have not had a response. Michael

The compression readings are 1- 165, 2- 160, 3- 165, 4- 170, 5- 170, 6 165. I am having trouble with the leak down test as my Snap-On tester just blew up. After hooking up the air pressure to the tester, there was a loud snap and it just started leaking air. I am trying to borrow another one. With the high and consistent compression readings, I doubt there is a leak down problem. Also, the plugs were all a light uniform grey color. Michael

The owner has enjoyed and maintained this car for 35 years. He is not a club joiner, event attendee, or car magazine reader like you or I. Upon his retirement, he was cleaning out files and records and the service records went with them. He never intended to sell the car and so did not see a reason to retain them. He was not aware of the existence of such a thing as a Kardex or C of A and would have no interest in them even if he was aware of them, . But we get older and there comes a time to let go. That time has come for him regarding this car. If you are uncomfortable bidding on the car with the available information, then do not do so. I will try to get a compression and leak down test before the end of the auction. Thank you.

twin-grille-roadster: It is most unusual for a Porsche owner who cares for his vintage 911 for 35 years not to have kept meticulous service records. To properly value this car, the bidders need a C of A or a Kardex and a compression and leak down test of the engine. Where is the service record for the engine rebuild? We need much more from the seller or the bidding on his 911 will remain light IMHO.
Hi, The current owner purchased the car from a friend who was the original owner. This is a two owner car. To the best of our knowledge this is a matching numbers car. The engine number confirms that it it a 1974 engine. Sorry, but we do not have a C of A or Kardex. Thanks, Michael
