The second passenger car offered by Volkswagen after the Beetle, the Karmann Ghia was styled by Italian design from Carrozzeria Ghia featuring hand-built bodywork by German coachbuilder Karmann. This 1974 Karmann Ghia Convertible marks the final year of the original Type 14 version and is said to have undergone a custom restoration 7 years ago including painted bumpers, recessed headlights, aftermarket wheels, bucket seats, a roll bar, an upgraded Empi shifter, and more. Showing less than 9k miles driven since the restoration, this custom Karmann Ghia is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Michigan.
The Type 14’s Ghia-designed bodywork was crafted by Karmann using hand-shaped and butt-welded body panels smoothed with English pewter, an intensive process that was typically employed by higher-end manufacturers at the time. This 1974 example has been restored and refinished in the current shade of red. Modifications include body-colored bumpers without bumperettes, deletion of side moldings and badging, recessed headlamps, and LED daytime running lights. Equipment includes a tan convertible top, dual exhaust outlets, dual chrome mirrors, and aftermarket 15” Spirit of America chrome wheels dressed in BF Goodrich G-Force Sport tires (2020). The seller notes some paint chips are present on the black trim atop the driver and passenger doors, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is lined with grey carpeting and features tan vinyl upholstery covering the aftermarket front bucket seats, reach bench, and door panels. Accessories include a custom body-colored dashboard and center console, a leather-wrapped chrome three-spoke steering wheel, a cup holder, an Empi shifter, a roll bar, a heater, an aftermarket Pioneer stereo, white-faced VDO gauges, a digital odometer, and an Auto Meter analog quartz clock. The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.
Power comes from an air-cooled flat-four engine featuring dual carburetors, a custom exhaust, a PerTronix Flame Thrower ignition coil, and a Claude’s Buggies oil sump. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transmission and disc brakes are equipped at all four corners. The seller notes an oil and filter change was recently completed and there are no outstanding maintenance items at this time.
This sale will include a spare tire and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for checking out this cool and modified Karmann Ghia. Fun little car that runs and drives well. Gets a lot of attention. We hope it goes to a good new home!”

@Whansen10 Good observation. My guys got lazy and didn't put a plate on. It is currently registered with our dealership, which will be transferrable to the next owner.
@garagekept Thank you for the VIN info. I noticed the fiberglass bumpers have been installed. The video shows the vehicle running down the street although no license plate is attached. Is this vehicle currently registered and if not is it able to be registered and licensed to travel on the public roads? Thank you!

@ScoobyDone compression numbers are posted in the gallery.
@ScoobyDone serial number on the engine is AH so its a 1600cc, which is accurate for a 174 Karmann Ghia. Here's the link: https://www.jbugs.com/VW-Tech-Article-Engine-Letter-Codes.html
Compression test should be done tomorrow. Will post results. Stay tuned.
Sharp example!
May we know the engine displacement please? Also, please provide compression test or leak down test results.
Thank you and GLWTA !!
