Now available for auction is this 1975 BMW E9 3.0 CSL Group 4 tribute. The first race car built by BMW Motorsport from the ground up, the 3.0 CSL was designed to compete in the European Touring Car Championship which it dominated throughout the 1970s. One of the most iconic and recognizable BMW designs, the 3.0 CSL was nicknamed the “Batmobile” for its aggressive aerodynamics and large rear wing.   Beginning with a 1975 3.0 CS, this E9 was custom built over the course of 18 years by one of the founding members of the Genesee Valley Chapter of BMW’s Car Club of America. It features some noteworthy performance upgrades including a Hartge H6SP high-compression engine, STAHL headers, a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system, custom Bilstein suspension, Porsche 993 RSR brakes, and a Getrag gearbox derived from an E12 BMW 535i. This example has been displayed at the Saratoga Auto Museum next to the #25 factory race car that it drew its inspiration from, and also won the Youngtimer award at the Amelia Island Festival of Speed in 2019. Comprehensively built at the hands of a true BMW enthusiast, this beautifully executed CSL Groupe 4 tribute is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

Finished in Chamonix White (085), this E9 showcases a hand-painted BMW Motorsport livery featuring the iconic red, purple and blue stripes, period-correct sponsor logos, and racing numbers inside the classic BMW roundels. The recreated Group 4 aerodynamic kit includes a widened front air dam, extra-wide front and rear fender flares, a rear roof spoiler, a rear decklid spoiler, and a large rear wing.  The E9 incorporates some of the BMW’s most iconic styling elements including the classic four-headlight grille and signature “Hofmeister kink” c-pillars.  It rides on lightweight Fikse PROFIL-5S wheels clad in Pirelli racing slicks that are recommended for replacement due to age. This E9 was treated to a full glass-out respray during the restoration and the seller notes it has been used exclusively for display and concours events ever since.  Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been completely stripped out and fitted with racing equipment including a full FIA-spec roll cage, FIA-approved Sparco Circuit racing seats with matching harnesses, kill switches for the fuel pumps, and a fire suppression system. A three-spoke leather steering wheel with a quick-release hub sits ahead of a white and blue painted dashboard, which houses black-faced instrumentation including an 8k-RPM tachometer and gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, and battery voltage. The matching blue center console houses a tall anodized blue shifter, pushbutton ignition, and rocker-style switches for the fuel pumps, lights, wipers, and engine cooling fan.

This Group 4 CSL tribute is powered by a high-compression H6SP 3.5L inline-six engine built by renowned German tuning company Hartge, which features 328 cams, a Hartge cylinder head, Hartge pistons, aluminum rocker arms, and STAHL headers connected to a straight-piped exhaust. It also includes an extremely rare Kugelfischer slide valve mechanical fuel injection system, found in the BMW M1, which draws fuel from a racing fuel cell with dual primary and secondary pumps. The front crossmember has been modified to achieve better weight distribution and provide clearance for the 6 individual throttle body trumpets. This engine is said to produce up to 275 HP with an 8k-RPM redline.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 265 5-speed manual transmission sourced from an E12 535i, which features a heavy-duty clutch and lightweight flywheel.  Braking is handled by Porsche 993 RSR calipers paired with two-piece floating rotors and stainless-steel brake lines. The suspension features externally adjustable custom valved Bilstein shocks and adjustable springs up to 400 lbs. All rubber suspension components have been replaced with polyurethane bushings from AKG Motorsports. This E9 has just recently received a full fluid flush, battery replacement, fuel line replacement, new starter, and a complete overhaul of the mechanical fuel injection system with custom lines for the velocity stacks.

This E9 is not currently registered for street use and will be accompanied by a clean title and bill of sale. Showcasing exceptional attention to detail and rare vintage motorsport upgrades, this E9 3.0 CSL Group 4 tribute offers the experience of one of the most iconic European Touring Cars of all time.

This car is better than 'as described'. I've seen it in person and @ASGMiami is not only a solid dealer, but the guys are pure BMW enthusiasts themselves. They both drive Ms. This thing is an absolute beauty. Kudos to the new owner to be. Best to all..

@tampagarage The car has had maybe 5 miles added since the car was taken out of show and storage mode. That entailed fully servicing it, doing all fluids, rebuilding the MFI, cleaning out the fuel tank, putting new fuel filters, and fuel pump as well.

Hi Seller- Is there any video of the car running, driving, idling without the background music? How many miles have been put on the car since it was taken off display/storage?

Labor of love. It's beautiful. A noisy video would help sell this car.

Welcome everyone to our BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 recreation! This car is as good as it looks and the only thing it needs in order to be enjoyed is a new driver. There were no details that were overlooked during the build process and it was done painstakingly by hand via a father-son duo. We look forward to getting this car to its next owner soon!
