1976 BMW 2002

Up for auction is this 1976 BMW 2002. This example reportedly went through a complete restoration totaling around $45k between 2007 and 2017 that included a complete disassembly and repaint in green, fitment of a 2002 Turbo-style front air dam and fender flares, a Euro-spec rear bumper, a rebuild of the 2.0L M10 engine with 2 40 DCOE Weber carburetors, a custom stainless steel headers-back exhaust system, a front big brake kit with 4-piston calipers and upgraded rear disc brakes, 15” Koenig Minilite-style wheels, a rebuilt sunroof, an upgraded sound system, conversion of the air conditioning to R134A refrigerant, and more. Having traveled just over 7k miles since the completion of the restoration, this 1976 2002 is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of New Jersey.

The exterior was completely disassembled, stripped, and repainted in metallic green. During this process, the front bumper was deleted, a 2002-style front air dam was installed, along with 2002-style fender flares and a Euro-spec rear chrome bumper. Equipment includes polished chrome trim, a driver-side mirror, green window tint, a polished fuel door, and a single center-exit exhaust tip. The seller notes a small blemish in the paint at the edge of the passenger-side chrome door trim, and some stone chips at the rear edge of the wheel wells. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. The 15” Koenig Minilite-style wheels are mounted with Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires displaying date codes from 2009.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench seat trimmed in tan vinyl with matching door panels and carpeting, accented by wood trim on the instrument cluster. Details include a rebuilt sunroof, R134A-converted air conditioning, a Pioneer Bluetooth headunit with Kicker 2-way front speakers, dash-mounted hidden mid speakers, tweeters, and Kicker 3-way speakers on the rear deck, manually adjustable seats, and manual roll-up windows. The seller notes a small tear on the driver’s side seat bolster and a missing plastic trim ring at the top of the passenger seat.

The  2.0-liter M10 inline-four is said to have been rebuilt, with bored cylinders, dual Weber 40 DCOE carburetors, and a 1 3/8th” stainless steel exhaust header mated a custom full stainless steel exhaust system. The rear wheels are driven by a 4-speed manual gearbox. A detailed breakdown of the mechanical aspect of the restoration is displayed in the receipts provided in the gallery. A front big brake kit consisting of 4-piston calipers and 22mm vented rotors has been installed, and the rear brakes have been converted to discs, with stainless steel lines at all four corners. An oil service has been carried out in preparation for the sale.

This sale will include 2 keys, owner’s manuals, a complete toolkit, and a binder with extensive records.

@rnak No leaks, very dry underneath. As far as the paint code, I don't have it, but any good shop should be able to match it with their electronic paint reader a few spray out samples .

  • rnak (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@Ambassador-Auto: Do you have the brand and paint code for the paint they used for respray if one wanted to spot in the passenger door? Are there any fluid leaks?

@Blueskyhotsun Hello and thanks for the question. Picture 314 (which is an invoice) talks about clutch being replaced. That was early on in the restoration.

@rnak Thanks for reaching out. The car runs straight with no pull. I was told it ultimately was a tweaked suspension component that was replaced and then it aligned perfectly. The car went through a complete disassembly when it was painted. The car has no rust or bondo. All body work was done correctly by the paint shop. The owner that I got the car from told me it was a strait restoration candidate, which is why he chose this car. I am not aware of any accidents. Hopefully that helps.

  • rnak (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@Ambassador-Auto: Looks like there were a few repair tickets addressing a sharp pull to the left. Is this completely fixed now or does the car still pull? Looks like the body and paint work in 08 was extensive, it mentioned repair of the A pillars....was there any accident damage? Is there any rust, rust bubbles or bondo anywhere on the car?

@Foxtrot actually works very well and is cold. Converted to R-134 and the system was rebuilt. Invoice for the work is in the photo gallery.

  • Foxtrot (registered bidder) 1 monthago

How functional is the AC system?

  • Ambassador-Auto (seller) 1 monthago

@rak1161 Unfortunately, I can't answer that question. I did not know the car prior to the restoration.

  • rak1161 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

How many miles were on the car before the restoration?
