The MG Midget is an iconic British sports car first introduced in 1961 as an affordable alternative to the Austin-Healey Sprite. This 1976 example represents the Mark III version of the Midget, equipped with a 1500cc inline-four producing 65 HP, an additional master cylinder for the clutch, and a permanently attached hood on scissor-type hinges. This 1976 example is said to have been restored under previous ownership, stripped down to the bare metal, and repainted in the original factory color of Vermillion Red. The top end of the engine has been rebuilt with a new head gasket, seals, and a racing camshaft by the current owner, in addition to the installation of a new starter, a Pertronix electronic distributor, new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, a new Weber carburetor, an oil change, and a flush of the cooling system. This restored 1976 MG Midget is now being offered at no reserve by the seller based out of Massachusetts.
The exterior underwent a bare metal respray in the factory color of Vermillion Red (118) with gloss black rocker panels. Equipment includes a black convertible soft top and boot, black textured front and rear safety bumpers, polished door mirrors, a chrome trunk-mounted luggage rack, a silver windscreen surround, a polished fuel filler, vent windows, and a fender antenna. The seller notes some minor blemishes throughout the body, detailed images are provided in the gallery. The 13” silver Minilite-style wheels are mounted with new Goodyear 175/70-sized tires.
The interior features buckets seats and headrests upholstered in black vinyl along with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Amenities include a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, an MG-branded shift knob, hinged vent windows, a locking glovebox, Smiths instrumentation, roll-up windows, and an AM/FM stereo. The seller reports the radio and fuel gauge are currently inoperable.
The MG Midget is powered by a 1500cc inline-four cylinder engine, which was factory rated at 65 HP and 72 lb.-ft of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The top end of the engine was said to have been rebuilt under current ownership and received a new head gasket, new engine seals, and a performance camshaft. Additional work includes the installation of a new starter, a Pertronix electronic distributor, new spark plugs and wires, a new Weber carburetor, an oil change, and a flush of the cooling system.
